Alright, this might go streight over your head but...
The strength and duration of genetic material is based almost solely on Folic Acid and Cobalamin, which are commonly found in raw meat and blood- yet are destroyed by cooking. These chemicals are used to prouce red blood cells, and are contained in red blood cells. Cobalamin also inhances the function of the nervous system.
Combined with the oxygen carrying capacity of arterial blood (The primary combustion unit- nescesary for life) it is scientifically conclusive that vampires have a longer duration of life than the average being.
An undead vampire would need a constant supply of Cobalamin and Folic Acid to maintain genetic information, nervous system function (Including brain function!) and avoid decay.- What better source of these chemicals than blood, streight from a human artery/arteriole?
Thus, the "Thirst" for blood would be less of a voulentary act for an undead vampire, and more of an invoulentary protection system built in to their highly advanced nervous system!
However, this does not attest to the common belief that undead vampires are immortal. Even with a much longer lifespan, the nerve synapses would eventually clog, thus nerves would cease function, and like every other being the aforementioned undead vampire would die forever.
