~ Father's Cancer Update letters ~

My mom writes a weekly update to our whole family on my FATHERS Cancer treatments and updates. I have decided to put them here for safe keeping.

Hi, everyone !

Today was a long day.

Al's appt. was for 9:45am for labs and 10:15am for treatment and then to see Julie. But that is not quite how it went.

Al is down to 242 pounds. His blood pressure and pulse were good but his blood oxygen was 93%.

When we went to the treatment room for his lab work and treatment, his port refused to work. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! They put the draino in and tried both his arms. No go. His body did not want to give up any of it's blood. So, while he was soaking, we went to see Julie. Al and Julie decided that he should have a chest x-ray of his lungs because they were sounding a little labored. Plus, they could not get any blood from him so he might be anemic. While with Julie, the port opened. Back to the treatment room and they draw out 6 (count them I did) vials of blood. The report comes back that his blood is down under 10 and he needs a B12 shot. Al takes his chemo treatment and gets his B12 shot.

While with Julie, an appt was set-up for Al to have a chest x-ray of his right lung and the left rib cage as that is a really sore area. An earlier x-ray showed there was a slight crack in his 7th rib, probably from open chest surgery. We went right from the cancer center to St. John's Hospital to have the chest x-ray and draining of his right lung.

We left the center about 2:30pm. Registered at the hospital, got his x-rays and drained his lung of about 150 - 200cc's of fluid which was sent off to be tested. Hopefully, it will show that the treatments are working. That will determine Al's course to come next.

Al saw Dr. Morris, mon. 2/4 and talked with him about what he thought would be the outcome and would it be worth it. Dr. Morris is a doctor for the older generation and a straight talker. Al likes him for that. Dr. Morris told Al that no matter what he does there is only one outcome, unless there is a mircale. I think Al has made his mind up that this is all he is going to take of the chemo. I am not sure as he has not spoke with me about it. Just a feeling I have.

Al has been verrrrry miserable this past week. And when he is miserable, he makes life miserable for all of us. But he has been sleeping very well.

We should know by tomorrow just how well the draining of the fluid has done on Al's breathing.

Will let you know what the ct scan shows when we get it. Probably won't get it until 2/18 or 2/19 as the test is not until 2/15 and that is a friday.

That's all the news that is the news
