Everything was a haze. Like some thick fog had settled in front of my face. It altered everything and anything. Hands as cold as ice, they felt more like rubber than flesh, shoved me forward. I slammed into someone else, muttering apologies. This was what it was like for hours. At least it felt like hours. Being pushed and shoved and pulled and yanked, like some rag doll in the hands of a child. I still kept glancing around at white walls. Where the hell was I?
Someone grabbed my arm and spun me into a different direction, behind a dark skinned women with long brown hair. She smiled at me but it didn’t reach all the way to her amber eyes. She took my hand and squeezed it, forcing me to focus on her face.
“What’s your name?” She asked me. I think she was talking to me. My eyes were having trouble focusing on her, like she wasn’t even there.
“My name?” I asked her. My voice was thick and low. I was so confused.
“You’re still under their drugs.” She put her hands on the sides of my face and shook my head. I winced at the pain it caused and tried to shake the women off. She stopped and everything was even hazier. I squinted at her, barely making out her frame before she shoved something into my mouth.
“Swallow it child. It will help.” I forced myself to swallow and something thick slid down my throat. I gasped as my eyes started to burn and my ears rang. She put her hands on my face again but this time I could focus on her. She didn’t even have amber eyes. They were green and covered in dark lashes. And then I noticed she wasn’t dressed at all. None of us where.
I scrambled frantically to cover myself but the woman gripped my hands and held them out. She examined me carefully and then let my hands drop.
“They will take you for sure. Your bone structure is decent, and your body is in good health.”
I shook my head, confused. “What are you talking about? Where are we? Who are you? Why are-“
A look from her made me fall silent. Somewhere deep in those green eyes was the truth and suddenly I didn’t want to know what it was.
“We are being quarantined to make sure we are not infected.” That was the only answer she gave me before someone in a dark suit grabbed her by her hair and pulled her away. She looked back at me and put a finger to her lips, telling me to keep silent. I nodded before hands wrapped around my waist and yanked me through another door.

“You who! Earth to Esther! Come in Esther.”
I winced back from her hand, my thoughts eluding my daydream and looked over at Lalain. She smiled big at me, her curly brown hair framing her face before stabbing at her peas.
“Sorry I must have zoned out.” I said sheepishly, glancing at the others through my auburn red hair.
“You’ve been doing that a lot lately. Something must be on your mind.”
I looked up at Aiya and gave her my best smile. “Something like that I guess.”
She leaned into me, her face masked but I knew what was on her mind. “You’ve been thinking about what’s beyond the district haven’t you.” She whispered.
I didn’t answer. Instead I looked to the left as two guards entered, each holding onto an arm of a guy none of us wanted to see. I tapped Lalain’s hand to get her attention and as she turned to meet my eyes with fear in hers.
“Who is it?” I asked, pretending to eat my pears. We weren’t allowed to notice anything strange happening. If we acknowledged it, we’d be taken to D district. And it wasn’t a fun place to go.
“It’s Cyan.”
The pear was half-way down my throat and it came up so fast I barely had time to choke and gag. Lalain slapped my back so hard I thought I was going to spit out a lung too. I covered my mouth to keep from yelling and slowly glanced over at the guy the guards were carrying. It really was Cyan. His hair was a little longer, just enough to cover his eyes and his lips were pulled in a tight snarl.
I stood, gathered my tray and went to dump it in the closest trashcan to him when Matt caught my arm.
“It’s too obvious. You’re bound to see him later so just act normal.”
I figured he was right and made my way to the farthest trashcan. If he noticed me, we’d be placed in the box. Everyone who was sentenced there was never the same again. Aiya had been their twice and each time she came out harder, more rebellious and twice as sinister. It scarred all of us sometimes.
