Ataraxia

Fountains

from the album

Lost Atlantis

(1999)

"Arabesqued damasks,

pillows of liquid and clear eyes

shining intense mirrors

of green silvery recesses,

tangled gardens,

emerald water-works,

old crumbled balaustrades

where ivies and ferns

fresco in the wind

spiritual thrills of bluish-green contrasts.

My liquid and clear eyes

grasp and welcome

the bright run-after

of immanent fountains.

My eyes now and ever

dilute in circles

of yellow-ochre water and flora

and vanish off-shore

brushing surfaces

into threads and fibres

of rainbow peacock tail."

by Francesca Nicoli

Ataraxia is a neo-classical/gothic band from Modena, Italy, that combines modern technology with archaic instrumentation over various media. They describe their music as a cross “between sacred and profane, ethereal and neoclassic, contemporary and early music.” Their work has often involved research into European legends and Classical mythology. Contemplation, dreamy experiences, elegiac atmospheres, ritual movements float in a mysterious garden where contemporary textures of notes meet the embracing echo of classic sounds. Their lyrics are written in many ancient and contemporary languages (such as Latin, French, German, English, and their native Italian) as they try to bring to surface the hidden treasures and revelations from each one. Many of their performances take place in locations the band professes to possess specific spiritual qualities. Since the beginning of the group in the late 80’s, they have recorded some 20 original LP’s. Their album “Paris Spleen,” released in December 2006 together with Madame Bistouri and CircuZ KumP, is based on cabaret macabre and surreal circus atmospheres. The latest LP, “Kremasta Nera,”, released in April 2007 draws archaic mantras and ritual movements, whispers magic spells and eastern litanies, and forges tribal rhythms and dark ceremonies inspired by the energy sites of Samothrace in Greece. They have released a poetic, photographic book together with the visual artist Livio Bedeschi and the music jourmalist Ferruccio Filippi tracing all their discography, philosophy and aesthetic perspective. This opus, with a CD included, is called “Arcana Eco”.

Band line-up:

Francesca Nicoli: vocals, flute, lyrics

Vittorio Vandelli: classic guitar, chitarra battente

Giovanni Pagliari: keyboards, piano

Riccardo Spaggiari: percussions and drums (darbouka, tar, caxixi, ghaval, daf, etc)

Years active: from 1985 to present.

It`s one of the waters I love to drown when I am alone, just like a fish.

Besides, a good milk it`s my favourite drink...

my blood.

:P
