He isn't coming back.
This isn't some fairy tale where the prince turns into a toad or gets kidnapped or even goes on a journey, forcing the princess to wait for a happily ever after. Like it's some testament of her love. As if waiting patiently proves that she's worthy.
He already told me I wasn't. So why does my head keep the hope alive? Why do I keep waiting, thinking he'll regain to human form or escape the clutches of evil or return home?
He had become my best friend. And I am not even worth checking on... I guess I'm not that princess after all.
It's strange how your sense of value can be raised so high by someone only to be dropped. It's like... all along you've been this glass figure. You are nothing extraordinary but someone finds you and truly sees you and knows just how to bring out the sparkle. He sets you up on the highest of pedestals where you catch just the right rays. You're nervous because you've never been up so high but he assures you with small nudges into the center of the pedestal that you'll be perfectly safe. After all, he's looking out for you and finds you prefect. You check all the boxes. Symmetry. Curves. Clarity.
And then one day he takes it all back... because maybe he saw a tiny flaw... and that pedestal you've been on disappears. You fall and shatter. You try to put the pieces back together but something isn't right. Things don't quite fit back where they should. You no longer feel symmetrical or have the curves and clarity you once did. You're full of glue and cracks and can't help but wonder why he didn't just leave you where you were to begin with. When you were completely ordinary but unbroken. When someone else might've been compelled to find you a safe place. But who needs to keep something safe when it's already broken?
