Well, I guess it's time to start calling this place home. While there are far too many crisp polo shirts and high tech flip flops for my taste and a grotesque lack of feathered fedoras and oddly placed metal facial findings this is where I am now and it's time to find the beauty. I must say to the town's credit that there is a grandeur to the urban decay that is quite captivating, far surpassing the the carefully cultivated charmingly couture shabbiness I'm used to. Gone are the artfully rusted overhangs and carefully cracked and ivied brick faces of independent hookah coffee shops and now I find myself marveling at the slow splintering of grand mansions, their vague southern charm oddly at home in the midwest climate now that a matching aura of dutifully accepted deprecation has been assumed. The elemental consumption is real here, more solid.
Thankfully I've aquired a new phone with a pretty decent camera. I sent a few pictures to a good friend who replied: "So I see your passion for all that is deconstructed, dying and decaying hasn't been lost in the moving jumble. You know decay has been so done before."
Without going into the kneejerk art school eletist bull shpeel about the End of History and the futility of original creative endeavors I'll simply say that, yes I am aware of this. But decay is on of very few things that is always unique. Nothing falls apart quite like something else and it's the subtleties that we chemically bond to. And enough of that.
All in all, it's been a fairly monotonous past couple weeks but I'm slowly finding the beauty and benefiting from it. I already feel more substantial from my midday meanderings. But no matter how many mismatched shingles or rotted out gazebos I pass by, I will always miss my left of center roots.
And the best people I know:

I have no idea what just happened.
I went out of town to visit my mother for Easter and say goodbye to my good friends before the move out of state with the boy. We were supposed to be leaving on the 28th of this month. Through a whirlwind of phone calls all that I've gathered is that while I was gone the guy we were staying with went on tirade and kicked us out and I'm getting on a train tomorrow at noon. I haven't the foggiest how I got here but I guess I'll go with the flow as best I can. Hopefully I'll get a good story or two out of it.

High tech flip flops? You definitely aren't in Kansas anymore Friday.
