Prologue

The cries of a newborn baby broke out across the little farming village in the quiet western corner of Alotrabast. It was a tiny Elf-child… and it was special. The first of his kind… a Vúlgren-Elf.

The family was visited by the gods of the heavens. Zeus, high god of Olympia, Artemis, goddess of the hunt, and Hades, god of the dark underworld… they came with their gifts for the child.

Zeus gave the gift of a quest the baby would perform when he became older, and that quest was to set a King on a throne and destroy an evil Lord that wished to kill that King. It was the child’s duty to see to it that the King was set on the throne after the Dark Lord was slain and his soul given to Hades.

Artemis gave to the child a fourth of her skill with the bow, that he may be a master of it when he grew older. She also named him the next holder of the ‘Life Star’, a tiny star from the heavens strung on a silver chain and given to the Elf maid that had saved Artemis from death when the world of Alotrabast was formed and its inhabitants created. The child would be a light to the Elvin race and guide them through the hard times they would be faced with in the future.

Hades gave the child the gift of betrayal. He would be betrayed by whom he would think a close friend, and in turn, if the child chose the right path, would kill his betrayer and give his soul to Hades. The god of the Underworld also gave the child a curse; never would he be able to see a sunrise nor a sunset and retain a normal life without small hindrances or pesky mishaps.

Then the child’s mother begged the gods to change her and her child’s appearances, for she knew that the evil Lord would search for her child unto the uttermost ends of the earth. Thus, the gods granted her this one request. They changed her into a human forever and changed the child’s form into that of a human infant until his seventeenth birthday or until he began to use magic. However, when a god gives a gift, they take something in return. They destined the child’s mother to die in battle and her newborn child to grow up knowing that his family would always be broken by death. This the mother took bravely and without a second thought.

Then all three of the Deities gave to the child the name of the Chosen One prophesied to lead Alotrabast to victory and balance if the correct choices were made. The name they gave to the child was ‘Valraen’, the Protector of the Peace.
