“Who does he think he is?!” The air was thick with tension as the king’s powerful voice boomed through the room. His words were sharp and unforgiving as he declared, “He must be punished. There is no other way.”
The advisor, who stood nearby, hesitated, taking a deep breath before finally gathering the courage to question his king’s judgement.
“Your Highness, is it by any means necessary?” he asked, by merely a whisper. The king’s voice took on a menacing tone, as if a thunderstorm was brewing in the clear blue sky. His eyes flashed with fury, and his jaw clenched tight before he replied,
“If you so desire, you can keep that traitor company on the execution yard.” The advisor felt a chill run down his spine at the king’s words, knowing he had crossed a dangerous line. That weighty presence left everyone uneasy. But the king spoke again, his voice heavy with regret and anger.
“I trusted him with my life and the safety of my kingdom. Despite the widespread fear and apprehension among my people, I gave him a chance to prove himself to me.” His eyes narrowed as he continued, “But my trust was misplaced. His facade blinded me, his true intentions hidden from my sight. It wasn’t until it was too late that I realised my mistake.” The bitterness in his tone grew with each word as he felt betrayed, not only by the one he had trusted for so long but also by his own unawareness of the truth. Looking back, he realised he should have been more cautious and discerning in his judgment. He should have listened to the fears and concerns of his people. But, in the naivety of his younger years, he chose to believe a stranger. And he chose wrong.
The advisor stood silent, avoiding the king’s gaze, while the rest of the room was just as unsure of what to say or do. One of the guards dared to break the silence.
“What’s your order, your Majesty?” he asked, his voice respectful but firm. The king looked up, his expression serious. He knew he had a difficult decision to make but also knew he could not let this slip. Nobody should dare overthrow a king—not even a dragon!
