Midnight Poetry
When daylight's glow begins to fade --
When darkness rushes in --
The twilit gates bring Poe and Yeats
To crawl acoss my skin;
And Pan strikes up a melody
While hidden watchers grin.
Tonight the throbbing in my bones
And tangles in my hair
Concoct a brew of old and new
From deep within somewhere --
Or maybe just beyond the stars --
I simply cannot care.
With muddled brain and drooping eyes
I fight to stay awake;
My muse commands these sluggish hands
Their stillness to forsake,
While moon and starlight scatter thoughts
Like diamonds on a lake.
Then like a comet quickly burned,
The panpipes cease their song.
My muse departs; his ghostly arts
Cannot be claimed for long --
But lulled by nature's orchestra,
I join the sleeping throng.
