I think the problem is I'm just immune to horror as a genre.
I played this little browser game called "Hotel 626" last night. It's endorsed by the guys who make Doritos and is an interesting attempt at a marketing strategy. Play the game, get the shit scared out of you and have a new found respect for the Doritos guys.
The amount of effort put into it was surprising. Game is complete with real actors at some parts and great audio effect. And I can tell when you're supposed to get scared, It just didn't work for me.
One thing I found funny was the part with the door code. I didn't really pay attention to what the crazy person was saying so I didn't know what to look for. I just entered the numbers "358" and the door opened. It's random each time so that was still spoiler free.
There's also an asylum 626 which I will be checking out tonight, there's bound to be some scary shit going on there.
Discovered that Battlefield has a free PC multiplayer yesterday. Been playing it all day and it's damn fun.
It's like all other online games as far as the "free" is concerned. You can play the full game for free but you can pay money for upgrades and the like. You can access all weapons in the game but they expire every 24 or 72 hours depending on how much of the in-game currency you spend. The only way to keep them forever is to buy them with real money.
You get in game currency by killing enemy soldiers and completing objectives so the expiration date isn't a big deal. Strong gun = more kills = more points = easy re-purchase.
The only thing I don't like is that you can only have 2 soldiers, and the class you pick for the soldier is permanent. If you want more than 2 classes, you gotta pay for more slots. I'm stuck with the engineer and the assault classes. Engineer is my favorite but after experimenting with the assault class, I wish I had gone with the sniper.
Really? You dare belittle my beloved zombies with your vegan propaganda?! Its times like these I wish duels to the death were still legal. Rapiers at dawn, anyone? Anyone?
I'm too tired to explain why going vegan is a very bad idea for the human body so I'll just say one word: teeth. Anyone who's actually done research hear should know what I'm talking about.
And now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go to the farm behind my house and pick out the cow I want for dinner this week. There's nothing like freshly cut steak.
Family mad me watch Insidious with them today. Apparently it was so scary that people were leaving the theater. After watching the movie, I think they were leaving the theater for a different reason; the movie is lame!
It is an interesting concept but it's also extremely predictable. The move edges you into every single scary part save for the red thing appearing behind the father, but that was already spoiled by the commercials.
Also I gotta say, the father is an idiot. Not going to give away why but let's just say I knew exactly what was going to happen and he should have too.
The only part than genuinely intrigued me was the part with the whistling ghost/person/doll people and the chick with the shotgun.
i mainly just want to know why that scene was there aside from "to freak the viewer the fuck out". It was interesting but completely damn random. That was the most interesting part of the movie for me. Gonna find a youtube clip of it to see if there's an explanation for the scene and if there's anything creepy that I missed.
Got Fallout 3 GOTY for the PC today. My PC is kinda outdated so, provided my pc can run the game and it isn't lag-tastic, I'll be selling my xbox 360 version for some spending money. You're able to use the GECK on the PC so essentially you can keep adding more and more ot the game, don't see any reason to keep the xbox version if it works well.
The install time for the game is insane so I've been passing the time playing Battlefield BC 2's multiplayer. The way everything handles in Battlefield compared to Call of Duty is like night and day. It looks more crisp, there's considerably less lag and I'm not being shot in the back every time I spawn!
You're also able to do some action movie type shit in Battlefield too. Like:
-Jumping off a roof, over an enemy tank, firing a bazooka into the rear of the tank while airborne and land on the lower roof across the street and immediately knife an enemy sniper.
-Jumping ontop of an enemy tank and start ripping apart with a drill, then stealing the tank when the driver gets out to shoot you off, and finally squishing the driver with his own tank.
-Ramping an ATV over a train and landing on an enemy soldier.
I've said it before but the animations on Battlefield 3 are freakin amazing. I was watching the multiplayer game play trailer and you can see the entire body when you preform action.
Hands/arms when reloading
-Hands/arms when crawling
-Waist and legs when climbing over a ledge
And there's even an actual kill animation for knifing an enemy.
Can't freakin wait for it to come out!

The Fallout 3 engine scales quite well when tweaking graphical settings.
And yes, Battlefield 3 does look all amounts of awesome.
Still have my fingers crossed that I get a closed Alpha invite.
My new system I just built needs a proper work out.
Especially considering Crysis 2 didn't do it, even with DirectX11 patch and high-res textures on Ultra high settings. -_-
Was thinking about downloading Team Fortress 2 on the pc .. but then I saw that the game takes a little over 10 GB of space! Killed that idea pretty quick.
To put that amount of memory in simpler terms.
1 GB is 1,000 MB.
The average song is about 3 to 6 MB in size.
If you were to download songs at 6 MB, it would take 1,666.6 songs to equal the size of this damn game.
...to which I say DAMN!
One thing I'm realty bad at is ending a conversation.
I'm decently good at communicating with other people but I can never figure out the appropriate way to end a conversion and I end up either seeming rude or it just ends really awkwardly. Kinda annoying.
Ya know what game I miss? Gladius. It's an old ps2/xbox game that mixes gladiator fighting with magic, RPG, strategy, turn based combat and quick time events. Friends and I used to play it a lot when I had it, wish they'd make a sequel but it was one of those games that fell through the cracks.
Also not a big fan of the color purple but I want that white gold/purple armor the character Ludo has in the latter half of the game. It looks so damn awesome!
Couldn't wait for the Silent Hill remakes so I bought Silent Hill 2 from Gamestop the other day. Unfortunately I'm unable to complete the game because of how horribly scratched it is - what do you people do to your damn CD's? - but what I got to play was really damn fun.
I got all the way to the underground prison entrance but then the game gets stuck in a permanent loading loop and I can't proceed. It's really disappointing too because I was looking forward to seeing Eddy again, not gonna spoil why.
On the bright side, the game was as unsettling as I remember. Part of the reason was, of course, the atmosphere. Getting to explore a fog filled town with monsters strolling the streets, plus the ambient sound effects of god knows what in the distance makes for a damn tense journey.
On the down side, the other part is the technical problems I noticed. Most notably the audio is messed up, not sure if it's because of the quality of the CD or not, but It is damn near impossible to tell where monsters are off screen - or how many monsters there are in the area either. I'm always really good at tracking enemies on games based on sound and movement, (L4D boomer exterminator, at your service) but in this game, it constantly sounds like the monsters are right in front of me, but there's nothing there. Maybe they're just hidden until I kill enough for more spawns, or maybe they're in the out of bounds areas just to freak you out, or maybe it is an audio fuck up, no way to really tell but either way, it's annoying. Other times the monsters moving sound effects play over each other, so one monsters sounds like 3, and 3 monsters sound like 1. It's led to some interesting encounters - and by interesting I mean getting beat up side the head with a plank of wood painful..
But that didn't stop me from playing, at all.
One thing I love about this game is that it doesn't hide/reveal items to you based on your current state. In a lot of horror games, if you're doing really well item wise, the game will remove items from the game. And if you're living health item to health item, the game will add more items to the game. This has always kinda annoyed me. But in SH2 all items are static so you're free to get as much of an item surplus as you're willing to get.
For me, I was sitting on 300 handgun bullet, 78 shotgun bullets and 40 healing items split between health drinks, first aid kits and the other, hard to pronounce one. Playing on normal difficulty too.I also used my guns rather frequently so the amount of ammo I had was kinda surprising.
There were two major parts of the game where I was actually a little scared, and both parts where when I was shrouded in pitch black darkens. The brightness on my TV is set really low to begin with and i'm too lazy to muck with it, and I had the brightness in game set to 2 so things were really fucking dark.
Part 1 was in the Blue creek apartments before getting the flashlight. It was only 1 hallway with 2 monsters roaming around but the only light sources were 3 working light scattered around the area. I had to navigate the hallway, find and kill the monsters without getting my face dissolved by the acid.
Part 2 was the Otherworld version of the town, just after the hospital. Because of the brightness thing, you literally couldn't see anything beside what was illuminated by the flashlight. Everything else was enveloped in pitch black darkness. Combine that with the doggy audio of the nurses lumbering in the not-so-distant distance and you get one scarey stroll. It also sounds like the nurses are sprinting when off camera which made got me sprinting for my life on more than one occasion. Having the radio off does help with stealth though, which is nice.
The nurses you see aren't the problem, it's the ones that creep up behind ya that get you. Doubly true if you're in the process of bashing in the head of another nurse when they start the creeping.
It's a shame I can't complete the game, it was damn fun. Who ever it is who neglected to take care of their SH2 CD, I hope you get AIDS.

Movie number two is supposed to come out to, august 1st.
Damn I would be pissed at the privious owner.. I just got a game that did the same thing the other week.
Silent Hill HD remakes coming out in September. Numbers 2, 3, 4 and possibly 1 on PSN.
Metal Gear HD remakes in November. Numbers 2, 3, Peacewalker and possibly 1 on PSN.
Gonna be all over that shit.
Spent the week playing one of my old favorite games; Wild Arms 3 for the PS2.
Never actually beat the game till now, despite owning it for several years. Something always happened at the same spot each time through that stopped me. Always occurred in the final act in a dungeon called the Demondor Pillar-Rear.
-First time I had to return the rental and deleted the save later to save space. Ended up buying it just at hollywood video a few days later...
-Second time I lost the memory card.
-Third time my memory card broke and corrupted all my save files.
But this time I managed to beat it and damn was it satisfying! 99% completed the game too. Reason for the 99% is because of this bonus key that costs 9,999,999. As soon as I saw that price tag I said "fuck that!"
Love the story on this game, it's always fun to see how writers implement things from ancient mythology into thee game world, Yggdrasil being the most obvious one.
All the characters were awesome too, and there was one for myself as well as my friends in terms of personality. I like pointing out similarities between myself and fictional characters, but even my friends agree that the characters in this game are around 80% like us which is awesome, especially since you get to name the characters.
The villains were bad ass too. Though Janus was the only one who knew how to fight. Everyone else kinda got their ass handed to them. You'd think a semi-robotic demon lord would know how ot fight but ... nope. You'd also think the same demon lord wouldn't dangle - literally - his immortality right in front of you, it's just asking to be stolen, which is was - but not before letting him heal a few times while I listened to his battle theme. The finishing shot was a counter attack, critical hit, defense nullifying shot from a massively high powered sniper rifle - his children felt that one.
Also love how this game makes some really intense moments just from music and cheap animations. The writers did a hell of a good job.
The abyss was my most frustrating part of the game. 100 floor long dungeon with no save points. Admittedly I was a bit under prepared item wise but I got through it, after spending the day down there. Worked out an interesting strategy for the bonus boss at the end though.
My character - the punk with the machine gun - has the highest evasion rate out of the group, at level 84 it's just under 600. Combine with with the magic "Turbulence" and it's over 1700 - which is insane - and the boss could not hit me with physical attacks. So what I did was I got my character down to incredibly low health by making the boss cast his counter magic attack, then cast the spell "Valliant" which converts all lost HP into attack damage. Combine that with an SOS critcal boost and an attack damage boost and the spell "Replay" which repeats a previous action, and I was knocking out 30,000 HP per turn. Granted the boss had 999,999 HP but even that doesn't last long with that assault.
I wasn't expecting there to be an even stronger version of that boss waiting for me at the entrance of the abyss though, so I nearly started to cry after going through all that to find this new boss blocking the exit. But I beat him with the same strategy. It wasn't really hard but it was loooong. Glad I did it though.
My mind's been wondering as of late, and I thought it would be a damn cool idea - if I should ever come into a shit ton of money - to build a Silent Hill themed haunted house, or rather haunted building. If you want to get really farfetched, an entire theme park.
First step would be to buy out some sort of office building, hotel or apartment complex in a big city like New York of Chicago.
Second step would be to re-design the building floor by floor. Ripping out the flooring and replacing it with metal mesh like in the Silent Hill Otherworld and give it that rust coloring. Doing the same thing to patches of the walls while ripping up the rest to give the building that worn look.
Also playing the Silent Hill ambient music throughout the building.

and this one ... i love this one.

Put bars on most of the windows and either a screen behind them depicting some destroyed ruins past the windows, some kinda unreachable hallway filled with bright light or just a black tarp covering the window to keep out all visible light. And with the other windows, board them up except for a few cracks to let bits of light in.
And of course some visual fog effects to either make a hallway look never ending or to give the illusion there's nothing below them.
The goal would be to make the building like a maze complete with riddles and "monsters" that chase you at specific parts.
Ideally I'd make it into a game show/contest type of thing. Contestants would have to sign a waver first of course.
5 to 10 people would enter the building at a time, and their objective would be to get to the top floor by traversing the Silent Hill labyrinth and avoiding the monsters within.
Time limit would be around 25 hours and the group would not be allows to bring in any of their own supplies, but they would each be provided with a flashlight, a bottle of water and a granola bar or two and then sent in.
The monsters - people dressed up as monsters - would only be allowed to grab the group members, whoever they grab is out of the game.
I'd have someone dressed as pyramid head carrying a plastic version of his sword. Maybe as an introduction, have him walking on the floor above them - metal mesh allows you t0 see above and below you - with the sound effect of a sword scrapping along the metal as he walks.
Have a few girls dressed as nurses at another point
and a few other things that I want to keep to myself.
The top floor would be like a normal building. This is where the gift shop would be, along with the winner's prize and some water and couches and stuff.
This is extremely extravagant so I'd have to win the lottery or utterly own the stock market to pull off but the idea of scarring the ever loving shit out of people is too amusing not to think of.
Also, am I the only one who finds Silent Hill to be a soothing place? The soundtrack, the atmosphere ... it's all very relaxing for me. And has been the catalyst for the best lucid dreams I've ever had.
Back from the hospital! Doctor's were a bit confused as to why my foot was numb, but they looked over the x-rays and fixed me up. Can't walk for shit though. Which means I can't jump for a while either which makes me kinda sad.
Since I'm more or less confined to my room now, I finally decided to pay Team Fortress 2! All the talk about it becoming free to play on Steam I decided to pop in my copy of the orange box and give the game a look. Don't know why it took me this long to try it though, I've been hearing good things about it since it came out.
From what I can tell, the console version of TF2 is watered down compared to its PC counterpart. I've seen YouTube videos displaying custom weapons and items and such and haven't seen a single unique item during my 4 hours play. That said the game is still damn fun.
My only real complaint is the lack of dedicated servers or match making. I've had a few matches abruptly end because the host left for one reason or another which was kinda annoying.
The art style also takes some getting used to - for me at least. That's why I stopped playing when I did, the visuals were giving me a headache. That - like me next trivial gripe - will pass as I get used to the game.
I'm also not used to the lack of automatic weaponry.. I'm used to more rapid fire sound effects and muzzle flashes, not an endless sea of explosions.
At the moment, my favorite classes are the Spy and the Heavy. I want to play with the scout more but until I get used to the visuals that's not gonna end well. Also not half bad as a sniper either.
While I love the Heavy spouting out lines like "I am giant!" in a Russian accent after mowing down the entire enemy offense, the Spy was built for me. I immediately picked up on when to cloak and where and who to disguise myself as when sneaking around. I am the bane of the Engineer.
