Chapter One
The rain on the roof of the car shook her from inside her mind. Every drop seemed to echo deep into the recesses of her mind, reverberating off of her skull. This was as far as she could get before the night was overridden by streetlights, and the sound of the highway disrupted the silence. Once she killed the engine there was nothing to see or hear for at least 15 miles.
Nothing but the stars to see, nothing but her thoughts to hear.
At the very thought of escape, Kirsty's heart thumped harder in her chest as if the sheer force would be enough to have her take that first step towards freedom. A shiver ran through her but she didn't want to shake the silence with her car just yet.
What had she been thinking about, floating off into the dark path ahead of her?
Breathing in deeply she stretched back and ran her fingers though her hair before laying her arms over her eyes. It had just been one of her usual fantasies. Thoughts that had trailed from one to the other with no real path to follow but all connected to the same realization. She didn't want to be alone anymore. She had to know.
Unlike most nights, Kirsty wasn't here with the sole purpose of relaxing and thinking. The next turn off less then 10 kilometres up was the next big step she had to take into her past. The chance meeting between that guy and her had been nothing if not Serendiptuous.
She started the car thinkign of the conversation they'd had. Short but he didn't skirt around the point. He knew her, he knew her story, more then she herself could remember.
His eyes penetrated hers, a dark stormy blue, the were like deep oceans of truth and knowledge. He held an air of dominance she didn't dare stray from his eyesight or look away.
even his voice seemed to vibrate wthin her chest as he soke, although it was barely over a whisper and he used few words. What she gathered was he knew who she was. He knew she was ooking for something and he had it. All her questions he had answers to he had the story she was looking for and was prepared to let her in on it....for a price.
He hadn't named it then and there, but she was prepared to offer anything. Of course, the last thing she had expected, but Should have anticipated, he handed her a card with an address on it and his name. His home.
Unthinking, she had accepted and he'd turned swiftly and dissappeared into the crowd.
Now she was driving up the longest, least inhabited road in her little town to see a guy who APPARENTLY knew the truth about her, and her past.
"This better be worth the skirt and cheap perfume." She said to herself, eyes focussing in on the huge house at the top of the hill, far off in the distance.
Trees, some dead, some freshy booming, loomed over the narrow road as if they were letting her car through. Not by any choice of their own. The rain was getting a little heavier but not threateningly so and Kirsty was pro at driving in rough terrain. The radio blittered in and out of tune until she got so annoyed wth it she just turned it off.
There were no street lights of course, it was a country road. All she had to go on was the highbeams on her car. Unfortunately they didn't stop the shadows from creeping in on all sides of her car, compressing her into a tunnel of light to follow until she got to saftey. Or a mad man's house.
"I'm not afraid of the dark... It's the Shadows, ad what is in them." Heart racing, she kept her eyes straight ahead.
Why she had to meet this man in the middle of the night, she had no idea.
"Easier to kill by the light of the moon then commit a crime under the sun." Now was definatley not the time to be coming up with smart ass lines for her novel's star character, that was for sure.
Finally, the trees broke onto a long gravelly drive way lit by road lights. She drove slowy approaching the gates about to pause until they opened voluntarily.
Creepy.
Breathing in a slow, concentrated rythm she drove up to the steps, killed the engine and stepped out.
Either she was going to find out the truth tonight or she was going to die never knowing. Both of these soutions stifened her resove and she knocked on the door shivvering slightly from the harsh autumn wind.
Chapter 2
She walked into the room, feet falling softly as if afraid to disturb the silence. At first glance it was empty, lightly lit by candles. The shadows, they danced around her to a silent song.
No, she wasn't afraid of the dark. The shadows, they scared her more then anything. Things hiding in the shadows.
No one knew, she didn't even know.
It was the sick feeling in the pit of her stomach that grew at the sight of a father and his daughter. The crawling on her skin at the lightest touch of a male upon its surface.
What was she supposed to say? How could she really explain when her whole life had revolved around covering it up.
What had brought her here in the first place?
Alone, unarmed, in a skirt no less...
"Dumb move, Kirsty." She scolded herself inwardly.
Perhaps it had been the thought of finally knowing the truth. The guy had seemed genuin enough.
Familiar was more like it. Where had she known him from before???
Either way, the drive had taken her more then an hour away from any kind of civilization, she wasnt sure her cell phone would work up here.
She was prepared to run through the forest, she'd scaled a small path through it mentally while driving past it however avoiding looking into it for any length of time.
But no, maybe she wouldn't have to run. she was there to get a story, her story from someone who apparently knew more then they should.
The missing element to my story... The entire memory, not just shards of it. He knew and he was going to tell her.
Now she knew why she was here.
Very tired....And the thought of what this year will be bringing in the next couple of months just seems to make the exhaustion worse.
It's gonna be a struggle. Im worried it is a responsibility i wont be able to handle...but i can do it...Im just scared, well..concerned i guess for how it's all gonna turn out...
