Kingdom of Cats

Sady jumped down from the Oak tree she had been standing in.

“Okay, Ramu,” Sady said turning to her guard, “We need to hurry. The rabbits are only 20 yards behind and coming up fast.”

Ramu just nodded and quickly changed shape to his Lion form. His was a shape unlike most of the guards who were all either Jaguars or Cheetahs. In human form he stood nearly 7 ft. tall, and in his cat form he was nearly 5ft. From shoulder to ground, and over 6 ft. from his nose to the base of his tail.

Sady followed suit and immediately changed into her on cat form. Sady was a very rare member of the Kingdom even among her own kind. Sady was not only the Chief’s daughter, but a Black Panther and a Black Panther had not been seen among the Cat Kingdom in over 500 years.

Both Cats took off East in the direction of camp. Sady was thinking as she ran, I wonder what’s up with Ramu. He rarely speaks anymore. It’s like we were never friends. I guess I won’t have to worry too much longer, because when I get married I will be assigned a new regime of guards, not just whoever I pick.

Ramu’s thoughts were a lot more turbulent than his outward appearance let on.

I don’t know what to do. I can’t tell her….

Ramu’s thoughts were cut short as the two made the jump across the ravine that bordered the Cat camp.

As the two cats landed nimbly within the entrance to the camp they were stopped by the guards.

“General Sady, Chief Malix would like to speak with you as soon as possible, it’s urgent,” one of the guards told her as he saluted her and Ramu.

Sady changed back to her human form, straightened her clothes, and nodded, “On my way then,” she said exasperated with the fact that her father still insisted she be called General Sady.

Radu followed Sady in silence to her father’s tent. Sady entered without giving the customary announcement. Radu waited just outside the door. He wasn’t about to be in there when either Sady or Chief Malix exploded.

Sady didn’t salute her father as she was supposed to and just plopped down on the cushions in front of her father.

“What do you want father?” Sady said angrily, “I was busy…and I already told you I won’t be here to get married to that cat you chose for me. He’s an ugly conniving bastard.”

“Well, you haven’t even said hello,” Malix said to Sady as he sat down across from her, “you don’t think I may have just wanted to see my only daughter?”

“No,” Sady said curtly folding her arms across her chest, “You never just want o see me.”

“Well, in that case I will get down to business,” Malix said pulling out some papers and pretending to read while continuing to talk, “you must get married before the fourth moon of this year, or we lose the clan to Atri. He has been vying for the clan since you were born, and I will not have that lunatic ruling the Cats.”

“I will get married, but not to any cat,” Sady said matter-of-factly, “you know I love that wolf, and yet you forbade me to see him, just because I am a panther. It doesn’t matter anymore. I swear to the Cat-goddess, I will kill the black leopard you force me to marry, and you know I will.”

“No, you won’t. You always say that, I know you don’t mean it. And I pray that you truly don’t, because you doom us all if you do. You are the only black panther born to the cats in the last 500 years. You must marry a cat or the family title gets passed to Atri and his bullies. Your up against a wall and you will do as I say or I will kill you myself,” Malix said this and just gave her a wave of his hand as a dismisal.

Sady screamed the panther screech at her father startling him. Pleased with herself, but angry with her father she left the tent quickly and motioned to Ramu to follow her as she worked her way around the forest of tents that surrounded her fathers.

The ground was dry and unforgiving because the rains had yet to come with the full force they normally do. Sady realized lost in thought that she was rather thirsty, and assumed Ramu would be too if she was. He never tells me anything anymore.

“Let’s go get a drink, Ramu,” Sady said without turning to her guard.

Ramu surprised Sady by responding, “Thought you’d never ask, General.”

“how many times have I told you not to call me that?” Sady said with a hint of a smile.
