To the other bank, the one I'm leaving behind lies my shattered dreams. I was once mortal just like any other fiend. And once my mortal life meant so much to me.



I was the only child of a struggling French Merchant who migrated to Island of the Philippines when it was still under Spanish rule. His wife, a Filipina-Spanish meztisa who once lived miserably in Spain. She was an outcast due to her Indio heritage.



She died a few weeks after I was born. Or so I was told.

Even then my father knew I was cursed. Upon my chest, shaped like a cross, was stamped an unusuall birthmark. It was reddish in color, almost of faint blood.

Sometimes I would hear him talked of it as the cause of my mother's death.



But my father never abandoned me. He loved me deeply, though I know it pained him sadly to think that somehow my birth led to my mother's death...

Sunset...tears of blood running down my ashen cheeks. Every memory recalled becomes a burden to my heart. Is it still beating? Vampire hearts do not beat, do they? Ah the smell of silts, and swampy rivers. The small river boat floated slowly and carefully towards the opposite banks, leaving behind some tearful memories that one day soon will be forgotten.



But that day hasn't come yet. Those memories have imprinted themselves in my mind. The past is never far. no matter how hard we run away from them...
