Another Child Tragedy Found on CNN

22:37 May 31 2007
Times Read: 722

Two toddlers who wandered away from home while their teenage baby sitter slept accidentally drowned in a nearby pond in northwestern Pennsylvania, officials said.

The babysitter told state police she put the girls down for a nap Wednesday and then took a nap herself. When she awoke, 20-month-old Jenna Walker and 2-year-old Maggie Kovski were gone, state police Cpl. Mark Zaleski said.

Rescuers were called at about 11:15 a.m. after the baby sitter found the bodies floating in a small, man-made fishing pond about 100 yards away from the home.

Chris Barber, chief of Stancliff Hose Co., said the 18-year-old sitter was frantically trying to help the children when emergency workers arrived.

"She was performing CPR, and when I got there, I started CPR on the youngest one," Barber said. "They had no pulse. They were not breathing."

Authorities did not identify the 18-year-old sitter, who is a relative of Jenna and lived in the house in this rural Pennsylvania town,15 miles south of Erie. Maggie was a neighbor.

Investigators said Thursday afternoon that they believe they know how the toddlers got out of the house, got to the pond and other details. District Attorney Brad Foulk said he would not discuss those details to protect the family's privacy and because authorities planned to conduct more interviews.

"I'm sure that everyone understands that his is just a horrific tragedy for everyone involved," Foulk said.

A woman who answered the phone at the Walker home said the family did not want to talk about the accident. The Associated Press could not locate a telephone number for Kovski's family.

Coroner Lyell Cook determined that the girls drowned and ruled the deaths accidental.

The ruling would not preclude criminal charges if investigators determined the baby sitter was negligent or reckless, Cook said.

Sometimes You Just Have To Choose

04:17 May 29 2007
Times Read: 729

Do not get me wrong. I am an empathic person. I understand that some people have gone through hell in this life. I do not think anyone gets off this planet, if they live longer than a few years, unscathed.

I have met people whose childhood was a living nightmare. I wondered after hearing their stories how they survived into adulthood let alone functioned. Some of these people were able to obtain good educations, have successful careers and marriages , and be wonderful parents. Others did not fare as well. I use to think that the ones who were able to cope with the abuse and move on as adults had better coping skills. I would always chalk it up to a lack of coping skills for the ones that could not move on and had problems throughout adulthood.

Finally I came to a realization. Some people choose to be different from their parents. One friend of mine has a mother who did not raise her and is an addict. She graduated from college and is there for her daughter. I have a friend whose step-father abused her throughout her childhood. She would never do that to a child.

I think a person chooses what type of life they will have. Sure circumstances play a part. They are not the only thing that determines what kind of life you have. If you choose to do drugs, you will suffer the effects and if you have children, they will too. If you do not get an education, the type of job you have will be limited to the lower paying ones. If you choose not to work, you will be unable to afford a place of your own. It comes down to choices. You make them everyday.

American Idol Shocker

13:45 May 17 2007
Times Read: 741

Well, I did not expect Melinda Doolittle to go home. In fact, I was sure just like everyone else who watches American Idol that she would be in the finale and possibly win. Simon Cowell looked shocked and none too pleased. I am wondering if he will be back next season. He already was not happy about Sanjaya advancing so far in the competition and made the statement if Sanjaya won, this would be his last season.

Melinda is very talented. I am wondering if the Melinda fans would a little too sure of her place in the finale and did not vote as much as they should have. I think the Jordin and Blake fans were sure that only one of them would make it to the finale, so they made sure they voted. Simon made the statement that Melinda was his girl Tuesday night. I really think a lot of people vote the opposite of what Simon says. His demeanor throws off a lot of people. He does not bother me. I just consider him your average Joe from England. These are just my theories though.

I will be voting for Blake next week. Ryan Seacrest may have been right all along. Jordin Sparks may win American Idol.

A Good Way TO get Yourself Fired

18:34 May 13 2007
Times Read: 748

I work at a factory called Allergan. Since I am a temp, I am only allowed to work 2000 hours or roughly one year, then I have to go on a three month lay-off period. I go back on May 25th. One of the temps that had just started before I left got hired as a permanent because of her background in surgicial nursing ( our work environment has to be kept extremely sterile, since we make eye products) and she had been a manager at a couple of other factories.

Connie ( Cadamia on the Rave ) works at Allergan as a temp. I called her today to wish her Happy Mother's Day. She then tells me what happened to the lady in the first paragraph. Apparently, she had been having an affair with a married co-worker. I had already heard about that and was quite shocked that he was cheating on his wife. He did seem like the family man. I guess one can never tell.

Anyway, the lady involved was always late back from break. Many of the people working with her kept going to Justin , the main supervisor, about her being tardy. Justin goes to looking for her. He finds her outside in the married co-workers truck peforming fellatio on him. Of course, she was fired. From what Connie told me, the man was not. I hope she was fired for being late back from break. IF the sexual activity was the main reason, both of them should have been fired.

Random Stuff

I think we are going to have a hot summer in Texas. It is burning up outside right now. I am sure I could fry an egg on the sidewalk. The electricity bills are going to skyrocket again this summer. One of my co-workers had a six hundred dollar electricity bill for one month last summer. Texas does not have a law that prevents the electric companies from disconnecting service for non-payment when the temperature is high. Some states do have laws that stop them from cutting service to their residents in times of extreme temperatures. I heard that Wisconsin is one of them.

My roommate's daughter rides the bus to school. The busdriver is perhaps one of the rudest people I have ever met. My roommate finally called in and reported him. When she called with her grievance, the bus people already knew who she was talking about. Apparently, they have had trouble with this fellow before.

Tonight, I get to indulge my American Idol addiction again. I know my roommate is glad she is at work. I think she hates the show. I voted for Blake, but I am unsure if he will stay. No matter what one may think of Simon Cowell personally , that judge is able to call the outcome the closer they get to crowning an idol. He felt both Lakeisha and Blake were horrible last night. So, I am sure one of them will be going home.

Sounds More Like Alabama In the 1960s

21:43 May 05 2007
Times Read: 762

I came across the following article on CNN's website. No matter what side of the immirgration debate you are on, the actions of the policemen on May 1st in Los Angeles should shock and sicken you. Many who were protesting there were American citzens. The Constitution gives them the right to peaceful assembly. Many would argue that a protest would not classify as peaceful assembly. That depends entirely on the actions of both the protesters and the police. There was a small group of protesters who threw things. Maybe they should have been warned to stop and then arrested if they continued. A ten year old boy and some reporters were also attacked because the police became angry at the other group. Here is the article:

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa condemned the Los Angeles Police Department's use of force against demonstrators and reporters at an immigration rally, saying he was "deeply, personally troubled" by the clash.

The mayor returned home Friday after cutting short a trade mission to El Salvador and Mexico amid criticism for being out of town since Tuesday's melee at MacArthur Park.

"Like every Angeleno I was deeply, personally troubled by the events of May 1st," the mayor said at City Hall. "Those images hit me in the gut.

"... We don't need a long and lengthy investigation to stand up and speak to the truth. What happened on May 1st was wrong, was wrong," he said. (Watch police attack with batons, rubber bullets -- and what provoked them)

Police struck reporters and demonstrators with batons and fired more than 240 rubber bullets into a crowd that included children at the end of an immigration rights rally. Officers say they responded after being pelted by rocks and bottles.

Though no one was seriously hurt, images of baton-wielding officers knocking people to the ground have played repeatedly on cable TV newscasts, ramping up the pressure on Villaraigosa to return from the trade mission.

At least four investigations, including an FBI civil rights inquiry, have been opened into the police response. Three protesters have filed a federal lawsuit, alleging police violated their constitutional rights.

State legislators, immigration activists and others returned to MacArthur Park on Friday to denounce the department's conduct.

"To say we are outraged is an understatement," said state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles. "We want those responsible in the highest levels of the LAPD to pay consequences."

The police union criticized Nunez for what it called "police bashing.

"... Setting up the population to believe that law enforcement is the enemy is a dangerous game," union President Robert Baker wrote in a letter Friday. "It provokes a lethal us-against-them, anti-law enforcement mentality that encourages violence against police officers."

Nunez's spokesman Steve Maviglio said late Friday that the speaker's outrage "should not be misconstrued as attack on the entire LAPD but rather at the command staff and the few officers who were using excessive force ... The police union should be outraged as well since the few who did this tarnishes the reputation of the brave officers who protect and defend us."

Chief says force used when people threw objects at police

Police Chief William J. Bratton has expressed "grave concern" about what happened and promised a full investigation. He has said the use of force began while officers were dealing with 50 to 100 "agitators" who threw objects. At the press conference, he said he was "embarrassed for this department and embarrassed for the city we serve."

Meanwhile, KTTV television news camerawoman Patti Ballaz filed a claim for unspecified damages against the city and Police Department alleging civil rights violations. The full nature of Ballaz's actual injuries was not yet clear. She suffered a fractured wrist and injuries to her ankle and was hit in the breast with a police baton, said Kathy Pinckert, a spokeswoman for Ballaz's attorneys.

There was no official tally of how many reporters were struck by police. Local media groups said they would meet this weekend to determine how to proceed.

Victor Narro, an attorney with the National Lawyers Guild who helped organize Tuesday's demonstration, said his group is reviewing videotape and considering whether to sue the department. He noted that in one tape he saw police fire a rubber round at a boy who appeared to be 10 and "toss him aside like a piece of meat."

John Mack, president of the Police Commission, the civilian overseers of the Police Department, told reporters the clash was "a terrible breakdown" and the panel wants to get to the bottom of who was in charge at the time.

"We have a responsibility to protect individuals while they're expressing themselves," Mack said.

Whatever Comes to Mind

06:23 May 02 2007
Times Read: 770

Yes, I watched American Idol tonight. I voted so many times for Phil Stacey that I caused the battery on my cordless phone to get low. I do not know if he will stay another week, since two are going home tomorrow night. I guess I will just have to wait until tomorrow night to find out.

I was watching the repeat episode of Larry King Live. He had Oprah Winfrey on his show. I really respect and admire that lady. The school she opened in Africa for girls will provide a better life for those who attend. She said her goal now was to get all fifty states to change their laws regarding child predators. I hope she is successful. I am tired of hearing about a child being kidnapped, molested, and killed by some pervert who had already been to jail for child molestation. He should have never gotten out of jail in the first damn place. I just do not believe there is a way to rehabilitate those type of criminals. They will keep doing that type of crime over and over again.

While I was reading last month's copy of Texas Monthly, I came across an interview with Ted Nugent. This guy is more politically incorrect than Bill Maher ever dreamed of being. I do not agree with him that learning English should be mandatory for all immigrants. I do agree with him that if they do not learn English they will not be able to fully realize the American Dream. That would be like me going to China and thinking I would get by without learning a word of Chinese. Just would not work out too well for me.
