To sum up our story so far, Elena has been turned to a vampyre through a transfusion of tainted blood. She found a society of other vampyres, and is trying to find what legends refer to as a cure. This mysterious cure involves a transfusion of a very rare blood type from a living person. The blood type is so rare that it only shows up once every few years, and never in more than three people (because of gene dilution). And Elena has just discovered her lover, Josh, is one of the few with this rare blood type.

Unfortunately, consumed with curiosity, Josh followed Elena to the meeting place of the vampyres and was set upon by the sentries. Elena has arrived to discover a mangled corpse with a still recognizable face...

Elena sank to her knees. The blood pooling around his still warm body soaked into her pants and warmed the skin of her legs. She touched his face gently. Amazing, how the sentries managed to leave the face and neck mostly untouched. Mostly. A few drops of blood had splattered in a small group above his left eyebrow. She leaned over, and kissed the blood off. It tasted of death. Even new to her powers, Elena could tell the difference between live blood, and blood of the doomed.

She fought back tears and stood up, his blood staining her lips.

"He tried to get in."

"He was very insistent"

"So are we." The two sentries grinned at eachother, miniature charicatures of humans, with batlike wings and slitted nostrils.

Elena did not turn to face them. There was no point in punishing the ignorant. They were only doing the only thing they knew how to do. Kill. But the taste of his blood and the anguish of her love denied reason. She whirled on the shorter one, and in one move, smashed him against the brick gate. The second hesitated, unsure of how to act against a true vampyre instead of a mortal. That was all she needed, that moment of hesitation. She crushed the first one's jugular in one tight clench of a fist and pounced on the neck, teeth bared. The taste of sentry blood was foul, like garbage, but she was not dining. No. This was a killing bite. Flesh and tendons and bone snapped under her grip.

She tossed the still body aside like a doll and went back into the house. Things had just changed. And were going to keep changing...
