This may be true, and of course the lie may be just as interpersonal as it is internal, but I think that all relationships are founded by assumptions, and the essence of relationships is determining whether those assumptions are true, the reactions we have when those assumptions are either subverted (either for better or for worse) or confirmed, and how much growth each partner experiences.
A lie in a relationship is, as I see it, based on someone conveying something that leads their partner or even themselves to assume one thing about the relationship to be true when that conveying person knows it isn't true at all.
Upon finding this to be the case, I think it is worthwhile to learn to simply be cautious but hopeful and truthful to oneself. Bitterness is a prison as much as optimism is, but the truth will always set us free.
