One Year Later

It's hard to believe that today marks one year.

One year since a frightened little puppy was found, abandoned and left to fend for herself. One year since circumstances brought our paths together, turning what could have been just another sad story into the beginning of something neither of us could have predicted.

Looking back now, it's difficult to imagine the house without her.

The first days were uncertain. There were vet visits, sleepless nights, worries about her health, and all the unknowns that come with taking responsibility for a life that suddenly depends on you. There was no guarantee of what the future would look like - only the decision that she wasn't going to face it alone.

That decision changed both of our lives.

Over the past year, I've watched her transform from a clumsy, curious puppy into a confident young dog. She's grown into herself in every sense. Bigger. Stronger. Smarter. More aware of the world around her. The oversized paws have become powerful feet planted with confidence, and the uncertainty she once carried has slowly been replaced with curiosity and determination.

Of course, it hasn't all been easy.

Training has tested both of us more than once. There have been days where everything clicked, and others where it felt like we'd taken three steps backward. Patience has been stretched. Boundaries have been challenged. More than once she's looked at me with that expression that says, "I heard you... I'm just deciding whether I agree."

She's stubborn.

Headstrong.

Independent.

And while those qualities can make for difficult training sessions, they're also part of what makes her who she is. I never wanted to break her spirit. The goal was never blind obedience. It was to give that strength direction.

Looking back over the year, I can honestly say we've both learned.

She's learned that consistency matters. That commands aren't suggestions. That trust is earned through repetition and reliability.

I've learned that progress doesn't happen on my schedule. It happens on hers. That frustration solves nothing, but persistence solves a great deal. That every difficult day eventually gives way to another opportunity to try again.

Watching her service training develop has been especially rewarding. Seeing her focus, watching her begin to understand not just what to do but why she's doing it, has been one of the most satisfying parts of this journey. Those quiet moments, where everything just comes together, remind me exactly why the long hours of repetition have been worth it.

A year isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things.

For a dog, though, it's an incredible amount of growth. She's no longer the puppy I brought home. She's becoming the companion I hoped she could be... steady, intelligent, eager to learn, and always by my side.

And the truth is... I rescued her that day.

But somewhere over the last twelve months, I think she's rescued a part of me too.

Here's to one year of muddy paws, chewed toys, early mornings, long training sessions, quiet evenings, countless laughs, a fair amount of frustration, and more memories than I could have imagined.

Here's to the first year.

And to all the years still waiting for us.

Happy anniversary, Lady. Here's to many more adventures together.
