Awakening Part III

It is a number that was turned into a weapon, a symbol of the darkness. When darkness comes, the nine ride up the driveway in the jeep. Laughing and throwing punches at each other, really looking forward to this night. I saw the jeep come up the driveway the grinding engine overpowered by the crashing of the surf a hundred feet away. I am standing inside a granite cottage by the beach. It is a wild night. I flick on the porch light for my guests. Still I stand behind the darkened window waiting for the giant door knocker to bang against the enormous oak door. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. I am excited yet nervous of not knowing what is to come. "Bang" three times. My cue. I open the door with a grin of welcome. "You-all come in now", I said. Make your selfs at home. Each took off their boots and followed me to the living room. There are three couches around the fireplace which is roaring. Nice and warm on a cold stormy night. Three to a couch very snug. This left me standing by the fireplace mantle. I spoke, "What can I help you with?" The eldest coughed and asked for water. "Of course where are my manners". I went to the kitchen and filled nine glasses with cool clean water, hoping this would refresh my guests. Back in the living room I again apologized to the eldest. He nodded acknowledging the apology. " We see only what we want to see" Very seriously the eldest continued. This what you must remember over the next several days. And so it began...

The Awakening Part II

Don't ask me how I got here. All I remember is that I crawled into the barn out of the downpour. Soaking wet I climb into the hay loft and sleep. Now someone is stirring below. I am frozen behind the bail of hay waiting for my moment to escape the barn. The mice are crawling over my ankles chattering up a storm. Who ever or what ever it is has left for morning chores and I need to disappear from this dusty haven into the cold morning. I didn't know it yet but deep in the Oregon forest i was about to met something very wicked and evil. I crawled through the field till I got to the trees lining the road, jump the ditch and stood there covered in mud. I grab a stick and do the best I can. I stick out my thumb and began walking backwards. Around the corner came a huge diesel Peterbilt gears grinding it slows and passes by me. I turn. The lumber truck is stopped, the diesel engine doing what engines do when they are in neutral. The passenger door swings open. I run up between the truck and the ditch, slipping in the mud, my sneakers not able to get any traction. I grab the chrome plated hand hold and pull. Climbing up into the seat I look at my benefactor. I did a double take. He is the spitting image of a young Clint Eastwood. He saw the surprise on my face and cracked a smile. "I am on my way to the logging camp up the road you are welcome to come." I had a bad feeling that something else was about to happen and I was a major part of it." I'll go as far as the turnoff if you don't mind." "Not at all." "Where are you going?", he asks." Just down the road to a town where I have a job helping to build a ferra cement ketch." "What is that?" "Supposed to be a 60 foot sailboat that we are going to sail around the world in." "Really, good luck." As we were talking he shifted the diesel up the cruising speed on this road about 50 mph. The chatter had stopped and I concentrated on what was going on outside the window which was forest deep dark dense forest. The driver started a to down shift and slowing. I was getting very antsy. Something very dark was about to happen. I looked at the driver he has the wickedest grin I have ever seen. "I am leaving now." "Let me turn into the side road." which wasn't more than a bumpy dirt track. I opened the door and rolled out, tumbling into the ferns. I watch the truck from there it didn't stop, it didn't turn, just kept going. When it was around the corner. I got up and walked over to the road. Checking for anything broken I was left with the silence of the forest and the sound of the diesel engine shifting up to speed. I didn't want to be here if the truck driver came back something odd about him just have that feeling. The road is wet and I start walking toward the next town up the road if one was there. I still had a job to go to and I am still in Oregon.

The Awakening Part One

21:32 Mar 25 2020
Times Read: 542

There is a thought that has been rattling around in my mind since waking this morning. The thought began one night as I walked off the ferry at the Port Angeles Pier Washington. It must have been 2 am. I am cold, wet and hungry. The only protection I have from the drizzle and ice wind is my soaked shirt, jeans, ruined sneakers. A small nylon knapsack covers my back. It carries the essentials. deviled ham, liverwurst and crackers that are soaked into mush. I eat the mush saving the reprocessed liver and ham for later. I have no where to go I don't know anybody here. Nothing is open. I have to get out of here or I won't survive from the exposure. Into the wet blackness I walk up the hill out off town looking for some kind of shelter in the ferns and redwoods. I walk in the forest. It is too wet too dark to build temporary shelter. Big mistake I finally get back to the road.

Start walking down the hill to town. Scanning for shelter anything to get out of this wetness. Then I see it. A 3 story apartment house across the road is in front of me. I look both ways and run across the road. In the darkness trip on the sidewalk edge Fall flat on my hands. Ouch I can feel the gravel under my skin. What next. I look up at the porch. The porch light is on. I get to my feet, look at my hands, not as bad it feels. I creep up the stairs to the front door and try the door knob. It turns. Behind me a dog barks. Not close enough for concern. Maybe someone is expecting me, I smile, Well lets get on with it. Creeping in and up to the second floor. Passing pictures of long dead relatives from another time. The wall paper is beautiful if you notice that type of thing. A Victorian red paisley. Right now my ears and eyes are on high alert focusing to get to the second floor without being heard from above or below. The floors, made wood planking creak under my weight. Nothing can be done. Exhaustion is setting in. Down the hall lined with apartment doors sits an overstuffed chair. My bed until dawn. Crawling into it curling up to fit on the pillow. I sleep.

The house woke me up. Someone,a stranger, is in the kitchen clanging around the breakfast skillets and mixing bowls. Time to go. Quickly walk down the stairs and out the front door. I turn right heading up the hill bone chill running down my spine. Thinking I got away without anyone knowing I was there, a stranger in a strange land.

I walk up the hill on the road that ran among the giant ferns and giant redwoods of the Great Northern Rain Forest. My clothes are semi damp, smell of must, no money, little food, sneakers held together with electric tape. I grin, this is exactly where I want to be. I turn facing the town down the hill and stuck out me thumb.

Thursday afternoon thoughts

22:35 Mar 19 2020

It has been a while since I wrote anything. Today I thought I ought to. Watching storm clouds turn into giant faces of gray and white. Just might rain on me today, The red roses are starting to bud. A friend of mine is hurt. All I want to do is wrap my arms around her and give a warm hug. I would tell her every will be OK. Have a little faith. No one knows what we manifest in our hearts and minds. Combined it is called Kokoro spirit. The merging of heart and mind into action. People come by the window to visit and wave. It is good to see the cheerful smiles, honest and good.

Traveling thru time. Now here. Tomorrow there. Where I travel there I go. Flip the page and I feel you smile and happy. This is a good thing and not bad at the same time. Surrounded by kin at this cottage by the sea.
