Family is power. The Original Vampire family swore it to each other a thousand years ago. They pledged to remain together, always and forever. Now, centuries have passed, and the bonds of family are broken.
Time, tragedy and hunger for power have torn the Original Family apart. Klaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, has returned to New Orleans, the city his family helped build, the city from which he and his siblings – Elijah and Rebekah – were exiled a century ago by their relentless hunter father. Curious as to why Klaus would return to the one place he swore he would never set foot again, Elijah follows his brother and learns that the beautiful and rebellious werewolf Hayley – Klaus’ onetime flame – has also come to the French Quarter searching for clues to her family history. Hayley has fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie Deveraux. When Sophie reveals to the brothers the almost unbelievable news that Hayley is carrying Klaus’ unborn child, Elijah realizes that the Original family has been given a second chance at humanity and the redemption they desperately crave.
Klaus, however, is not so easily convinced that a potential heir is of any importance. He is more intrigued by his recent unexpected reunion with his former protégé, Marcel, a charismatic but diabolical vampire who now has total control over the human and supernatural inhabitants of New Orleans. Tensions between the town’s supernatural factions – vampires, witches, werewolves and humans – are nearing a breaking point as Marcel commands his devoted followers and rules with absolute power.
For Klaus, the idea of answering to his powerful protégé is unthinkable. As Klaus vows to reclaim what was once his – the power, the city and his family – he realizes that Elijah is right and that his unborn child could be the key to the Originals’ return to power.
While they wait for their sister Rebekah to join them in New Orleans, Klaus and Elijah form an uneasy alliance with Sophie and her community of witches. Sophie has been turned into a revolutionary by the loss of her own sister at Marcel’s hands, and by the mysterious disappearance of a young witch named Davina, and she is willing to do anything – including making a deal with the Original family – to break Marcel’s power over the witches of the French Quarter.
Even the human population of the Quarter is unwittingly drawn into this supernatural battleground. A recent arrival to New Orleans, Cami is a whip-smart psychology grad student who appears happy to pursue her studies by day and work nights as a bartender, unaware that many of her customers are vampires. Hiding the dark secret that has brought her to New Orleans, Cami soon finds herself fascinated by both Klaus and Marcel, and totally unaware of the danger that they pose for her and everyone around her.
Now, in the midst of a thriving New Orleans, a city known to be steeped in magic and history, the long-smoldering war is about to reach a fever pitch, and the Originals stand as the catalyst. Mother
Esther
Born during the Middle Ages of Europe, at some during her life, Esther and her husband Mikael left their homeland soon after a severe virus, known as the plague, spread throughout their village killing millions of people and children and also their only child at the time.
Soon after her arrival in the New World, Esther had an affair with a werewolf, of whom they shared a child. This father is unknown, but the son was Klaus. After years of living in peace with the natives, the war between vampires and werewolves had not yet begun, until Esther’s youngest son, Henrik, was mauled by a werewolf. After being convinced by her husband to perform The Immortality Spell that would transform them into the first known vampires, Esther proceeded to do so. However, after Klaus’ first human kill, he unknowingly activated his werewolf gene, and in the process, exposing Esther’s infidelity with a werewolf.
After suppressing Klaus’ werewolf abilities by cursing him with a spell, Esther was then killed by Klaus, due to his natural werewolf aggression heightened by his vampiric side caused him to take out all of his rage for her betrayal out on her at once. After she died, Esther's body was preserved and placed in a coffin by her witch friend, Ayana. Esther's spirit however, was forced to watch her children wreak havoc on the world from the other side and feel the pain of every victim as nature's way of punishing her for her actions.
Esther, also known as the Original Witch, was the wife of Mikael and the mother of a deceased son, Elijah, Finn, Niklaus, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik. She was a woman who was highly devoted to her family, especially her children, and she was devastated by the death of her son Henrik at the hands of the werewolves and swore not to lose another child. Along with her husband Mikael, she was responsible for the creation of the vampires, as she turned her husband and children into vampires to protect them. When her son Niklaus was revealed to be a vampire/werewolf, she also was responsible for imprisoning his werewolf side in a dormant form. Niklaus killed Esther by ripping her heart from her chest.
Her body was preserved with a spell by her friend and mentor, Ayana who was also a witch, and she would be able to return to it when a bloodknot spell would release allowing her to channel a whole line of witches both living and dead. Esther returned when Ayana's descendants, Abby and Bonnie Bennett, released her and begun to plan the destruction of her children because she needed to repair the mistake she had made by creating and turning her children into vampires. Esther originally planned to turn her children back into humans before killing them and ending the vampire species. However, her plan failed when Abby was turned into a vampire by one of the Salvatore brothers, therefore breaking her access to the Bennett witch line and the power from the witches dead and alive.
Esther returned with a new plan to destroy her family by turning Alaric Saltzman, Elena and Jeremy's male guardian, after Jenna died during the breaking of the curse, for Niklaus into an Original Vampire armed with an indestructible white oak stake. This would make him like Mikael, he would be a Vampire who hunted Vampires. Although she succeeded in turning him, Esther was killed by a transitioning Alaric when she tried to kill Jeremy Gilbert and Matt Donovan.
Father
Mikael
Mikael was one of the Original vampires and a vampire hunter. He was the husband of the Original witch Esther and the father of a deceased son, Elijah, Finn, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik. Mikael was also the step-father of Niklaus.
Mikael first appearance was in a flashback from the 1920s in The End of The Affair, as someone Klaus and Rebekah were running from. His name was revealed by Rebekah in Disturbing Behavior. At some point in the 1990s a witch named Abby Bennett entombed him. Twenty years later, he was released by Katerina Petrova and Jeremy Gilbert. After Mikael was released, he tracked down the Salvatore Brothers and told them that he would help them kill Klaus, however, while executing the plan he was killed by Klaus with his own weapon.
History of Esther and Mikael
Mikael was born in an Eastern European village where he met the witch Esther, and the two fell in love. They married and were wealthy landowners when they started a family. After their first child was born, a plague hit Eastern Europe and killed their first born child. Desperate to escape, Esther turned to her witch friend, Ayana, who told her of a land beyond the seas where the natives were blessed with supernatural gifts and where they could live away from diseases. Mikael, Esther, Ayana and other settlers (possibly Viking) left Eastern Europe for the New World (later known as America) and settled in the area where of present day Mystic Falls.
However, the New World wasn't as peaceful as the couple had expected, especially during the full moon: their neighbors were Werewolves. They lived in peace with their neighbours, hiding in caves during the transformations. It was during this time that Mikael and Esther had more children: Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, Rebekah, Kol, and Henrik.
The Children
Mikael and Esther's firstborn
His name is believed to have been Aron.
He died in eastern Europe at a very young age because of a plague that had struck the homeland. His death is what caused Mikael and Esther to move to a "mystical land" (Mystic Falls), where a dear friend and witch named Ayana told them that the inhabitants had increased strength and speed (werewolves). In modern times, he is mentioned by Elijah when he says that his mother and father had seven children, and by Rebekah when she told Elena about how her family ended up in Mystic Falls, she said that their parents lost a child in Europe and after that they moved to Mystic Falls after Ayana told them about it.
Niklaus - (Born from the Immortality Spell during the affair Esther had with a werewolf)
Niklaus Mikaelson (a.k.a. Nik or Klaus) is the Original Hybrid, and the son of an unnamed werewolf and Esther. He has six half-siblings: a deceased unnamed older half-brother, four other half-brothers named Elijah, Finn, Kol, and Henrik, and a younger half-sister named Rebekah. Klaus is also the step-son of Mikael, with whom he had a strained relationship before the latter got killed.
He is first mentioned in a conversation between Rose and Stefan when she warns him about the Originals. She tells him that Klaus is believed to be the most hated and feared of all the Originals and those who fear him are desperate for his approval. Over the centuries, Klaus has become a recluse who confides in and trusts only the few members of his inner circle.
For over a thousand years, Klaus had been trying to break a curse placed on him. He created the myth of the sun and moon curse in order to find the moonstone and the Petrova Doppelgänger, both of which were needed to break the actual curse. His goal was to liberate his werewolf side so he could sire his own super race of vampire-werewolf hybrids.
In 1492, he finally got his chance to break his curse when he met Katerina Petrova, the final piece necessary to break the curse. However, Katerina managed to foil his plan to use her in the sacrifice by turning into a vampire. For the next 500 years, Klaus searched for a way to break the curse without the doppelgänger, forcing generations of witches and warlocks to help him. During his search for a way to break the curse, Klaus hunted down his family and neutralized them. He also hunted Katerina Petrova, who had escaped him and stolen his moonstone.
Elijah
Elijah was the firstborn son to Mikael and Esther in an area in the New World that would come to be known as Mystic Falls. They lived among werewolves for about twenty years, and during the full moon, the humans would simply hide in the underground caves while the werewolves turned. During Elijah's early life, he and Klaus both fell in love with a woman named Tatia.
One morning after a full moon, Niklaus comes out of the woods holding his dead little brother Henrik. Elijah comes running to join his mother as she grieved Henrik's death.
To ensure that the rest of her family would survive, Esther used a spell (called The Immortality Spell). Mikael gave his children wine laced with blood from Tatia. Then he stabbed Elijah and his siblings through the heart and made them drink human blood. After becoming a vampire, Elijah, along with his family, made sure that the White Oak Tree, their one true weakness would be destroyed.
Shortly after becoming a vampire, his mother was killed by "Mikael". After burying their mother, Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah promised that they would never turn their backs on each other and that they would stick together as one, always and forever.
Italy, 1114
Elijah was in Italy along with his siblings Rebekah and Klaus. They came across a vampire hunter named Alexander who was part of a group called The Five. Rebekah fell in love with Alexander. Elijah and Klaus took advantage of this as an opportunity to get closer to Alexander and find out his secrets. One day, the three siblings were invited to a party at Alexander's home where they were attacked by surprise and daggered. Klaus was again unaffected by the dagger thanks to his werewolf lineage and undaggered Elijah and the rest of his siblings except Finn.
England, 1492
n England, Elijah and Klaus were noblemen in the late 15th century. Elijah met Katerina Petrova, who was the Doppelgänger of Tatia and the key to breaking Klaus' Hybrid Curse through sacrifice. While Elijah was helping Klaus achieve his goal, he started to fall in love with Katerina. Elijah tried to persuade Klaus to spare her life, but Klaus told him not to bother and that the ritual would go on as planned. On the night of the full moon, Katerina took the moonstone and fled with the help of Trevor.
Klaus assumed Elijah helped her because of their discussion the night before about sparing her life. Elijah promised him that he would find her, and Klaus responded with a promise of his own: if he did not find Katerina, he would be killed. Elijah attempted to track down Katerina down but failed.
New Orleans, 20th century
During the 20th century Elijah lived in New Orleans along with his siblings. Niklaus, Kol and Rebekah. Elijah and his siblings had many fun times in New Orleans and didn't want to leave. But then Mikael came and drove them out of New Orleans, leaving countless of bodies behind him. Kol was then neutralized by Niklaus for reasons unknown, Elijah and his siblings left New Orleans behind before their father could reach them.
Finn
Finn was third born of the seven children of Esther and Mikael, who were wealthy landowners from East Europe. He was born in the New World when his parents moved there after they lost their firstborn to plague.
Along with his family, Finn lived in peace with the other members of their village, some of whom were werewolves. Each month they hid during the full moon not to be hurt by the transforming wolves.
When his brother Henrik was killed in an incident during the full moon after he and Klaus snuck out to see the wolves, their father Mikael had Esther turn them into the first group of vampires (using The Immortality Spell) in order to prevent the tragedy from happening again.
However, the object that granted their immortality, could also take it away, which was the ancient white oak tree. To prevent anyone from making a stake from the tree, the family burnt the tree to the ground. However, they would have other weaknesses including the flowers that grew at the base of the tree, a silver dagger dipped in the ashes of the tree that could neutralize them temporarily and they would always have a constant desire for human blood.
During one such feed, Klaus killed a human which triggered a Werewolf curse he carried, revealing Esther had a affair with a werewolf. Enraged, Mikael killed his wife's lover and his family, triggering the war between their races that would last centuries.
Esther placed a curse on Klaus to prevent him from becoming a true hybrid, as that would make him invulnerable to what harms both vampires and werewolves. In revenge Klaus attacked their mother for betraying him and blamed it on their father.
1114
Finn reunited with his family in Italy and attended a party held by Alexander a vampire hunter. He was daggered by surprise during the party. However when Klaus (unaffected by the daggers thanks to his hybrid powers) annihilated the Five, he undaggered all of his siblings but Finn, as he was tired of Finn's judgmental attitude (which most likely stemmed from Finn's virtuous ways and Klaus's evil ways).
Kol
Kol Mikaelson was one of the Original Vampires, born in the 10th century to Mikael and Esther. Kol was the fourth son, the younger brother of an unnamed deceased brother, Elijah and Finn, the older brother to Rebekah and Henrik, and the half-brother of Niklaus.
During the Middle Ages, Kol was born in a small village, now known as Mystic Falls and like the rest of his family, was a human up until his younger brother, Henrik, was killed by werewolves. It was because of this tragedy that his mother, Esther (who is the Original witch), and his father, Mikael, decided to take action to protect the rest of their family. Esther decided to perform the Immortality Spell. She then gave her children wine laced with Tatia's blood and then had Mikael kill her children. Later, Mikael forced them to feed on human blood, thus turning them into the first Original vampires.
1114
Throughout this time, Kol was in eastern Europe making the Originals famous with his actions (most likely killing or turning people indiscriminately). He would later join his family in Italy where he went to a party held at a vampire hunter named Alexander's home. He was later daggered in a surprise attack but revived by his brother Klaus (who was unaffected by the daggers thanks to his hybrid powers).
Between 13th and 20th Century
Kol traveled with some witches for a long period of time. Africa in the 14th century, Haiti in the 17th century, and New Orleans in the 20th century. They all knew information about Silas, who Kol believed to be very dangerous if released. He holds witches in high esteem.
Somewhere in between, Kol came across a cult that worshiped Silas as a god despite the fact he would supposedly destroy the world. This is what made Kol decide to kill them all.
During the 20th century, whilst living in New Orleans, their father Mikael had managed to track them down and killed many vampires in a fury, trying to locate his children. Kol was then daggerd by his brother Niklaus for unknown reasons. He was kept in a coffin for over 100 years, until he was freed by Elijah.
Henrik
Henrik Mikaelson was born in the 10th century and was a member of the family of Originals, being the fifth son and the youngest child of Mikael and Esther. Henrik has six siblings consisting of four older brothers: Mikael and Esther's firstborn, Elijah, Finn, Kol, an older half-brother named Niklaus and an older sister; Rebekah. Klaus caused Henrik's death at a young age. His death is what drove Esther to protect her children by turning them into vampires.
Not much is known about Henrik, other than the fact he was the brother of Elijah, Niklaus, Finn, Kol and Rebekah; that he was killed at an early age between 10-15 by a werewolf and did not become a vampire due to his death.
Rebekah mentioned that Henrik was the youngest brother, which means he is the youngest member of the Original Family.
He and Klaus went to see the werewolves transform, but he was brutally killed by one. This event caused Mikael to ask his wife Esther to transform their children into the first vampires.
Rebekah
Rebekah is the only daughter of Mikael and Esther, wealthy land owners from
Eastern Europe in the 10th century. She is the sixth of seven siblings, Elijah, Finn, Niklaus, Kol, Henrik, and an unknown older brother who died while the couple still lived in the Old World. Not much is known about Rebekah's early life, other than that she was born in the New World, where they lived in peace among werewolves for twenty years. However, during a full moon, when the wolves were transforming, Niklaus and Henrik snuck out to watch the villagers transforming from men to beasts. As the sun began to rise, Rebekah saw Niklaus carrying Henrik's lifeless body back into the village. He stated that one of the wolves had mauled Henrik to death.
Not wanting to lose another child, their mother Esther decided to cast a spell (The Immortality Spell), calling upon the Sun for life and the White Oak Tree for immortality. However, the spell lead to some untimely acts. Unbeknownst to Rebekah and her siblings, they drank wine laced with the blood of Tatia for dinner, and afterwards, Mikael drove his sword through their hearts. After their awakening, Mikael forced his children to feed on a local villager therefore completing their transition into vampires.
Later, they began to realize that their new gift had its weaknesses. The flowers that grew at the base of the White Oak Tree, vervain, burned them and prevented compulsion. The sun burned their skin, making it impossible to walk in the daylight for them. They were unable to enter the homes of their neighbors without an invitation. Also their thirst was uncontrollable. Realizing that a wood carved from the White Oak Tree would be fatal to them, they burned the tree to the ground. After their mother's death, Rebekah, Niklaus and Elijah swore to each other that they would never turn on each other and stick together as one, always and forever.
1114
Rebekah was residing in Italy with her brothers Klaus and Elijah when they met a vampire hunter named Alexander, a member of a group called The Five. Rebekah soon fell in love with him and this allowed Klaus and Elijah to get closer to him and question him about The Five. During this time, Alexander and Rebekah planned to get married. They even picked out a church and he shared a lot of information with her about his plans for hunting vampires. However, unbeknownst to her, Alexander had found out she was a vampire and while she and all of her siblings were his guests, overnight The Five daggered them all with white oak ash daggers. Klaus, unaffected by the dagger thanks to his werewolf lineage, undaggered her after killing Alexander and the rest of The Five. Klaus then viciously interrogated her until she revealed that Alexander's supposed ultimate weapon was a "cure." Despite everything that had happened, she buried Alexander with his sword at the church where they had planned to marry.
1492
Rebekah was in England along with Elijah and Klaus. She met Katerina Petrova, the first Petrova Doppleganger, who was going to be sacrificed soon to activate Klaus' werewolf side. However, after Katerina's escape, which subsequently destroyed Klaus and Elijah's bond, Rebekah has held a grudge against her ever since.
1920s
Moving from town to town and wreaking havoc, Rebekah and Klaus found themselves in Chicago during the roaring 20s. After her introduction to Stefan Salvatore, Rebekah immediately fell in love with him. Not long after, Mikael arrived in the city searching for Klaus and intending to kill him.
Mikael and the police fired wooden bullets into the building. Rebekah, Stefan, and Klaus ducked to avoid the bullets and in the commotion, Rebekah lost her mother's necklace. Klaus met up with Stefan and compelled him to forget ever meeting him and Rebekah.
Later, Rebekah and Klaus are shown to be packing and moving elsewhere. Klaus tells Rebekah to hurry up, but she says that she is not going anywhere without Stefan. Klaus tells her to let Stefan go, but Rebekah refuses, intent on staying with him. Klaus forces her to choose between him and Stefan, and as she opted for the latter, he neutralizes her with the White Oak Ash Dagger. This is the only weapon that can be used to neutralize an Original Vampire like Klaus and herself.
Rebekah remained neutralized for 90 years and stored in a coffin which was carried around with Klaus wherever he went. The coffins also contained her other brothers, Finn and Kol.
Marcel Gerard
Marcel Gerard is Klaus' former protégé and a vampire that he turned back in the day. Marcel enforces a system of rules of his creation within the French Quarter, which all supernatural residents must abide by. He considers himself the king of the Quarter and of New Orleans.
Marcel was a slave who at some indeterminate time met Klaus, who eventually turned him into a vampire. He was Klaus' protégé for a while, until Mikael showed up and caused Klaus to flee the city. Marcel survived Mikael's massacre of the vampires of New Orleans, and eventually established a leadership role in the French Quarter. Where to this day he reigns as a self-proclaimed "king". He mentions in The Originals that he studied law in the 1950s. At some point he got Davina as his ace through unknown means.
The Werewolves/Hybrids
Hayley
Hayley was adopted by another family so she doesn't know who she got the werewolf gene from. She triggered the gene when she was drunk on a boat trip and accidentally killed someone. She transformed for the first time in her adoptive parents' living room; after wreaking havoc on their house they kicked her out. Hayley has been on her own since then, occasionally joining up with wolf packs but never staying anywhere long. She has a mark on her back which looks like a crescent moon which she had assumed was just a birthmark and thought nothing more of it. However, when Klaus sees it, he reveals that he has only seen it on a handful of others born from a specific bloodline of a werewolf, who belong to a clan which once thrived throughout what is now called Louisiana.
A friend of Tyler's, Hayley is responsible for helping him break his sire bond to Klaus. He kept his real identity a secret from her. She later showed up in Mystic Falls looking for him and began to help Tyler break the sire bonds of some of Klaus's other hybrids, but it is later revealed that she had been working with Shane in an attempt to sacrifice twelve unsired hybrids to raise Silas; she was only interested in this because Shane promised her she would be reunited with her deceased parents. After this revelation, she fled town and began working with Katherine. However, Katherine sent Will to kill Hayley when she had stopped finding her useful. Klaus saved her and they became allies, sleeping together on a drunken whim. He was interested to learn that she had a birthmark which also belonged to a particular bloodline of werewolves he had met before.
In The Originals, it is revealed that Hayley is pregnant with Klaus' child from their one night stand.
The Witches
Sophie Deveraux
Sophie Deveraux is a witch in her late 20s, whose magic has been compromised, and she's not happy about it. She's is a force to be reckoned with, and she's sowing the seeds of a supernatural revolution. Sophie lost her magic skills, but she has got a plan to get them back. She will be a regular in The Originals.
Nothing much is known about her past expect she and her sister weren't allowed to practice magic because of Marcel. At some point she became a cook for a cafe she helped her sister with. At some point she met Hayley and detect her pregnancy somehow knowing the baby was a loophole to Nature's plans because of the father.
Jane-Anne Deveraux
She's the older sister of Sophie and they weren't allowed to use magic because of Marcel's rules which Jane Anne rebelled against leading to her death. Before her death she possibly got Katherine to lead Klaus into New Orleans to throw-over Marcel as Klaus has more respect for witches.
Bree
Bree was a witch. She was the former lover of Damon Salvatore, and dear friend of Lexi and Lee. She was later killed by Damon.
Not much is known about Bree's history, except the fact she fell in love and dated Damon Salvatore while he attended college. Damon was searching for a way to release his former lover, Katherine Pierce, from the tomb in Mystic Falls and tried to convince Bree in using her magic to free her, but was unsuccessful.
After failing to open the tomb, Damon broke up with Bree. Later in life, she opened up a bar and befriended another vampire named Lexi and her boyfriend Lee.
Gloria
Gloria was a flamboyant soothsayer and also an excessively powerful Voodoo witch. Unlike vampires, Gloria is not immortal. However, despite her charmingly good looks and forty-year old appearance, Gloria is over one-hundred years old.
After a surprise visit from Klaus and Stefan, Gloria informs Klaus that she needed Rebekah's help to summon the spirit of the witch that cursed him. Rebekah wants to find her missing amulet, so Gloria prepares a spell to do so. Back in Mystic Falls, the amulet, currently in the possession of Elena Gilbert, burns her as she is wearing it.
Gloria claims she does not see it, though she does. Sensing Stefan knows something, she plans on torturing him for information on the amulet. Stefan had given Elena the necklace, and knows that if Gloria can locate it, Klaus will know Elena is still alive. (Klaus was convinced Elena had died when he drained her of blood for the sacrifice).
She is later visited by Damon Salvatore, whom she clearly cares for. Damon and Elena had come to find Stefan, and when Damon is nearly killed by Klaus, Gloria stops him by igniting the stake he was going to use (claiming she wasn't going to have a dead body in her bar). Later, Stefan goes to kill Gloria to prevent her from discovering the truth, only to be attacked by Gloria instead. As she already knows where it is, she tortures Stefan to discover who the girl is. Realizing Elena is the Petrova doppelgänger, she prepares to tell Klaus, only to be killed by Katherine, who had sneaked up on her.
Davina Claire
Davina is experimenting with her powers and controlling a candle flame when Marcel walks in to ask her if she has sensed any magic being performed by the witches. She responds no and then voices her worry that the Originals might hurt him. Marcel insists that she has nothing to worry about as he claims that Davina is too powerful for the Originals to stand a chance.
Three months later, Marcel gave Davina Elijah's body since she's the only one who can invite vampires into the room. After meeting Rebekah, Marcel mentions to her how Rebekah hasn't been very nice to him tonight so Davina throws Rebekah around the room until she throws her out the window.
