Ripclaw is a Native American cyborg. He is an expert in hand to hand combat and possesses a superhuman healing factor and the ability to commune with the spirit world, allowing him to shape-shift.

Ripclaw is descended from the ancient Iroquois Nation, named Robert Berresford (Bearclaw). In his adolescence, he began to see signs of mutation in his hands. During a martial arts class with another student, the issue provoked him to confront his father about his unusual traits. He left home, seeking answers.

He falls into trouble, hurt seriously, when stumbling into a fight. The local Shaman takes him in teaching him about his ancestors.
