- 6 medium-sized red apples (red so you can have a bit of red show through as lips!)
- Handful of mini marshmallows
- Pre-packaged caramel apple mix (or use this homemade recipe)
- 6 lollipop or popsicle sticks
Instructions:
- Clean, scrub, and dry apples. Insert a lollipop or popsicle stick into the top of each apple.
- Prepare caramel according to recipe or package’s instructions.
- Submerge apples in caramel as much as possible and swirl them as you lift them back up to let any excess caramel drip off.
- Place apple upside down on a Silpat or greased wax paper-lined cookie sheet.
- Let caramel set for about an hour before carving out the mouth.
- When caramel is set, use a sharp knife to cut out a wedge from the middle of each apple to form a “mouth”. Push back the caramel around the mouth a little with the edge of the knife to reveal some red “lips”
- Cut mini marshmallows into triangles for the canines and in half lengthwise for the central incisors. I opted for my apples to be congenitally missing their lateral incisors, but it’s up to you if you want to include more teeth!
- Use small drops of leftover caramel to attach the marshmallow teeth to the mouths.
- If you’re making these ahead of time, cover the apple mouths with a bit of lemon juice to prevent browning.
