Abandoned by their mother shortly after their birth, siblings Wanda and Pietro were placed in the care of a Gypsy couple Django and Marya Maximoff. Following a brutal attack on their family encampment both Wanda and Pietro fled and were left to fend for themselves for several months. As teenagers, their mutant powers had begun to manifest, but were not yet controllable. After a tragic mistake that led to Wanda inadvertently setting fire to a home, Wanda and Pietro found themselves faced with a crowd of panicked and angry townspeople. The mutant Magneto stepped forth as their savior and in doing so secured the valuable gratitude and service of the powerful siblings. It didn't take long though, for Wanda and Pietro to become disillusioned with their leader, and their roles in the anti-human terrorist unit, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
They found a new calling under the leadership of Captain America in the newly formed Avengers team. Alongside Captain America and Hawkeye, the young super-team battled an impressive array of villains, including Dr Doom.
The Avengers team expanded, and Scarlet Witch found herself drawn to one of its new members, Vision. She began taking lessons in sorcery, in an effort to better control her powers, which gave her the confidence to marry Vision.
Scarlet Witch and Vision would try several times over the years to leave active duty in pursuit of a quieter domestic life, but time and again they were drawn back into the fray.
