This painting was originally titled "Love and Pain". An art critic understandably interpreted this painting as being vampiric in nature. The painting became known as "Vampire" only after this assessment. The woman in the painting is consoling her lover, not sucking his blood as it appears.
The style of the painting lends to the ambiguity of the relationship of the couple. In case you do not recognize the name, perhaps you've seen the style, as they are most recognizable in his famous painting, "Scream".
