The monster is equipped with thick talons. Its brutish likeness is identified by exaggerated cranial ridges, a blunt batlike nose, and a broad tooth-filled maw. The monster is drawn out of hiding when an Earth spaceship (the product of sophisticated 1973 technology) lands on a rigid crater-laden Mars landscape, bearing a crew of rescue technicians sent to discern the fate of a previous exploration team. Only one survivor remains of the original team, and the general consensus is that the survivor must have killed his cohorts in an attempt to hoard rations. After the survivor is taken into custody, the spaceship lifts off and reenters space, with no one aboard initially realizing that a horrible monster the same mysterious life form sworn by the original survivor to have eliminated the rest of the first team has stowed away.
