In the heart of the old quarter, where cobblestones whispered underfoot and lamplight pooled like molten gold, lived Aurelio, the clockmaker. His shop was a narrow sliver of time itself—walls lined with ticking hearts of brass and glass, each one breathing in its own rhythm. For fifty years, Aurelio had mended the hours of others, but never his own.

He was a man of quiet rituals: tea at dawn, polishing gears until the sun tilted west, and winding the great grandfather clock in the corner before locking the door. Yet lately, the clocks had begun to falter—not from rust or dust, but from something he could not name. They slowed, hesitated, as though reluctant to move forward.

One evening, as rain stitched silver threads across the window, Aurelio found a small, unfamiliar pocket watch on his workbench. Its casing was warm to the touch, engraved with a spiral that seemed to draw the eye inward. When he opened it, there were no hands, no numbers—only a faint shimmer, like moonlight caught in water.

A whisper, soft as breath, curled into his ear: Your hour has come.

He felt no fear, only a strange clarity. Memories unfolded—his first clock, the laughter of his late wife, the day he decided to stay in this little shop forever. He realized he had been measuring time for others while letting his own slip quietly away.

The shimmer in the watch deepened, and Aurelio understood: this was not a timepiece, but a door. He set it gently on the counter, took one last look at the rows of ticking companions, and smiled.

When the morning came, the shop was silent. Every clock had stopped at the same moment. The pocket watch was gone.

And somewhere, beyond the reach of hours, Aurelio was still winding the gears of a world without endings.
