More than 60 years ago, in his “Foundation” series, the science fiction novelist Isaac Asimov invented a new science — psychohistory — that combined mathematics and psychology to predict the future.

Now social scientists are trying to mine the vast resources of the Internet — Web searches and Twitter messages, Facebook and blog posts, the digital location trails generated by billions of cellphones — to do the same thing.

The government is showing interest in the idea. This summer a little-known intelligence agency began seeking ideas from academic social scientists and corporations for ways to automatically scan the Internet in 21 Latin American countries for “big data."

And just what is "big data?"

Sociological laws of human behavior — which will enable the predictions of political crises, revolutions and other forms of social and economic instability, just as physicists and chemists can predict natural phenomena.

It is intended to be an entirely automated system, a “data eye in the sky” without human intervention, according to the program proposal. The research would not be limited to political and economic events, but would also explore the ability to predict pandemics and other types of widespread contagion, something that has been pursued independently by civilian researchers and by companies like Google.

So no people we never beat the true concept of 1984, regardless of the few and far between steps implemented by the government to interfere with our everyday lives. The cameras on the streets were only an obvious ploy to hidden in plain sight and we saw them, we see them and we should have known that it was too obvious and too simple to believe that this was as far as they were going to go.

Oh yes that little known intelligence agency is called: iarpa

Yes! I heard of this before. Seems Orwell knew something we didn't! Ah, times are indeed changing. Now, there are RFID chips and the Veri-Chip that can track a person anywhere in the country maybe the world due to it being connected to a satellite system. The Big Brother society seems to be here.

Yes this is very scarey indeed. The idea that we've the need to be controlled by others. I can under socio-studies, but this travels far beyond that region

This isn't really something new, with search engines like Google and Yahoo the technology to search the internet instantly for any given subject or even an exact sentence across billions of web pages has been around for some time. The only thing that has changed is smart phones and the like.

Apple is currently being sued by the FFC because they where keeping track of what people where buying via their iPhone.
Data is data and it really doesn't matter what gadget you use to send and receive that data... that would include text messages as well. Anyone who doesn't think that the government isn't going to take advantage of high tech is living in a fantasy and in most cases the tech for some of these gadgets came from military applications.

In the end the same rules for the internet still apply... be carful what you post, anyone anywhere can see it and it will be floating around out here forever.

Severus

You are correct, quite true by a 100%.

But...this is slightly different. Where by information can be monitored, as it has been for the last 50 some odd years by the biggest listening agency in the world, NSA, this information monitoring and gathering and analyzing is a bit more advances. More so, it is a form of "artificial intelligence" that is sorting out things through a means of socio-analytical discovery which involves both math and psychology...math in the sense of equations that are percentages of psychological theorem.

Theorem in mathematics is a statement that has been proven on the basis of previously established statements. Because theorems lie at the core of mathematics, they are also central to its aesthetics.

In order to be proven, a theorem must be expressible as a precise, formal statement. Nevertheless, theorems are usually expressed in natural language rather than in a completely symbolic form, with the intention that the reader will be able to produce a formal statement from the informal one.

Severus? "Big Data"

And just what is "big data?"

Sociological laws of human behavior — which will enable the predictions of political crises, revolutions and other forms of social and economic instability, just as physicists and chemists can predict natural phenomena.

So yes Severus you are 100% correct about Apple and other means and methods....But this is a higher form of intrusion, one that is bone to the core of "Terminator" and such like films. And it's real.

I don't understand the question. Are you asking what people think about this? Whether they have heard of this scheme? What?

I knew about the chips. We have a couple and Israel from what I read in the past was the first to come up with one. Dannion Brinkley warned of the chips a number of years ago. Here they will get them in for health reasons so they can scan your medical history. I have seen lists of people volunteering to have them implanted. I hate to say it but mostly young people. I shook my head and thought why so eager? Can't they project the outcome over time of such an invasion of privacy? Guess not.

The average person doesn't care about any of these things. If the propaganda put out denies intrusions, people will believe the government. They do now. It will be chalked off to conspiracy theories and loonies. People are getting restless especially in the US. Lots of rallies going on in Southern California that are associated to politics and actions they are doing that people don't like. I read about them but don't attend. Many young people are involved.

You can find out about such things in Facebook, Twitter (don't like that one) and in general on the web. If there are people who do nothing else but surf the web with key words, they would find many things going on that deal with a lot of disgruntled people mad about a long list of things.

AsphaltTears,

No my friend not chips, this is something more advanced.

Iarpa officials declined to discuss the research program, saying they are prohibited from giving interviews until contract awards are made later this year.

A similar project by their military sister organization, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa, aims to automatically identify insurgent social networks in Afghanistan.

Anyone familiar with comic books knows that the stories presented are usually based upon some form of fact that has evolved in one way or another from a fictional perspective.

This "eye in the sky" is not a new concept by any means...and before anyone delves into the realm comic books being compared to real life try to understand that comics have always reflected some idea from reality.

In a series titled "OMAC" from the early 1970's , Set in the near future ("The World That's Coming"), OMAC is a corporate nobody named Buddy Blank who is changed via a "computer-hormonal operation done by remote control" by an A.I. satellite called Brother Eye into the super-powered One-Man Army Corps (OMAC)

A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Brother Eye. Just like Brother Eye this “data eye in the sky” is intended to be an entirely automated system without human intervention.

What possibilities await human kind once A.I. machines such as this come into force. What rights do you think will be lost?

1984 was simply a book.

Governments wish to exert control over the populace. It doesn't really matter which party is in power. Both parties are owned by corporations. Corporations wish to maximize profit and power. Both wish to exert authority over the people. Why? Neither really trusts the people especially the voters.

In the wake of 9/11 look at all the laws that went into effect to allegedly protect this country. Among them was The Patriot Act. This act was rushed through Congress and signed by W within days. Did you ever consider how it was done so quickly? Because the blueprint was in place. The act was written and there just never enacted before. Among other things the act allows US citizens to be detained , the Act allows monitoring of libraries and that means your reading list, the act allows greater interception of telephone and internet conversations. All of this in the wake of something that caused fewer deaths than the Japaneese attack on Pearl Harbor. All in all terrorism does not cause a lot of deaths.

There are many corporations that profited from 9/11 and still continue to do so. yet, they are afraid of the people.

You want to do something I would suggest that you not play. How, you ask tear up your credit cards. Consider buying from thrift stores or other second hand stores. You want to save for your future, then invest in funds that are socially conscious. Yes, I know the return isn't the same as it is for Exxon oil. But it is a start. Another way, is do not drive anymore than you have to. Consolidate trips. make lists. Try to have one day a week where the car does not move out of your drive way.

As I have said before our government, the way it is constiuted now, is not your friend.

Interesting. You say '1984 was simply a book', then go on to illustrate how accurate a portrayal of a totalitariun state it is... and, how we're becoming more so, to suit the convenience, of a few.

1984 was simply a book. Not a blue print.

Review the histories of corporate America and you will find a willingness to run roughshod over the workers. Corporations are non breathers yet, the republican majority US Supreme Court has seen fit to bestow "person class" on these entities. The march toward corporate domination started long before Orwell wrote 1984.

yes, we are approahing a totalitarian state. the question that may arise is exactly what "you" (as in everyone) are willing to do to stop it?

yes, we are heading for a totalitariun state.
it's here. If anywayone tries speaking against the state, the state fights back... look at David Kelly, agrguing against WMD's...

camera's on every corner.

and when the banks collapse, who props them up. we do. at whose expense? ours.

what do we do? keep our eyes and ear open, for a start.
talk of what we see and know; but... look to who actually wields power as well... and, why.
