The era of The Terminator, the perfect robotic killing machine, is decades away; to date, all efforts to create a humanoid robot that can climb the stairs, let alone fight the Taliban, have been risible. But scientists are reporting breakthroughs with the next-best thing – the creation of human terminators, who feel less pain, less terror and less fatigue than “non-enhanced” soldiers and whose very bodies may be augmented by powerful machines.

Efforts to understand the brain of the soldier and put this knowledge to good use have been going on for some time. Professor Jonathan Moreno, a bioethicist at Pennsylvania State University, studies the way neuroscience is being co-opted by the military. “Right now, this is the fastest-growing area of science,” he says.

The Pentagon is currently spending $400m a year researching ways to “enhance” the human fighter. The defence giant Lockheed recently unveiled its “Hulc” (Human Universal Load Carrier), a science fiction-like, battery-powered exoskeleton that allows a human to lift 100kg weights and carry them at a fast run of 16kph (10mph). The videos of the Hulc in action are truly impressive. Superman strength is one thing, but soldiers still need to sleep. In Afghanistan the average soldier in combat gets only four hours’ rest a day and sleep deprivation is the single biggest factor in reducing fighting performance. Not only are tired soldiers less physically able to fight and run, they make more mistakes with the complex weapons systems at their disposal – mistakes that can prove deadly to themselves and their comrades.

Using chemistry to attack fatigue is, of course, nothing new. Two centuries ago, Prussian soldiers used cocaine to remain alert and Inca warriors used coca leaves to stay alert long before that. Since then, nicotine, amphetamines, caffeine and a new class of stimulants including the drug Modafinil have all been used successfully, to the extent that American soldiers can now operate normally even after 48 hours without sleep. Now the chemists are trying to tweak the molecular structure of this drug so that it will switch off the desire for sleep for even longer.

Tiredness is not the only psychological problem faced by soldiers. Combat is immensely stressful and although proper training means that men and women can remain focused while in mortal danger, it is afterwards that problems begin. During the Vietnam War, one in three soldiers was treated for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and in the Second World War a significant proportion of Allied conscripts never fired a shot in anger because of stress and fear before the battle had even begun. Up to now, PTSD has been treated by a mix of psychotherapy and antidepressants – effective techniques but expensive and time-consuming. But as with fatigue there may be a chemical shortcut for PTSD.

The trick is to erase unwanted memories, or at least take away their sting. Professor Roger Pitman, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School in the US, has been experimenting with a drug called propranolol, a “beta blocker” normally used to treat high blood pressure, which he believes can erase the effects of terrifying memories.

Professor Pitman has given the drug to young volunteers who have suffered extreme trauma in, for example, road accidents. Those given placebos suffered nightmares, and remained fearful of the road. When exposed to recordings describing their accidents they suffered typical stress responses – sweating, beating heart, dilated pupils. But those who had been on a course of propranolol showed no response at all. It was as though the trauma had not happened. For a soldier, memory-altering drugs such as this could mean violent combat becoming no more troubling, retrospectively, than a visit to the gym. “The problem is,” Professor Moreno says, “what else are they blocking when they do this? Do we want a generation of veterans who return without guilt?” You may not even need drugs to short-out the unwanted side effects of battle. Dr Albert “Skip” Rizzo, a psychologist from the University of Southern California, has created a “virtual Iraq” video game, in which veterans have been able to re-enact their experiences to release pent-up stress.

Generals not only want stronger, more alert and less stressed soldiers; they want smarter ones, too. One of the most bizarre neuroscience findings in recent years is that by immersing the human brain in a powerful magnetic field, its powers of reasoning and learning are almost magically enhanced.

No one knows exactly how “transcranial magnetic stimulation” (TMS) works, but the Australian neuroscientist Professor Allan Snyder believes that magnetic fields in some way “switch off” the higher levels of mental processing that normally cloud our thoughts, allowing a “pure” form of reasoning to take over.

“Each of us could draw like a professional, do lightning-fast arithmetic,” he says. In fact, some subjects in TMS experiments have acquired (temporarily) similar abilities to the rare “autistic savants”, people who are able to perform astounding arithmetical feats and memorise whole telephone directories (an autistic savant was played by Dustin Hoffman in the film Rain Man).

In 2009, a US Academy of Sciences report concluded that within 20 years we could be using TMS to enhance soldiers’ fighting capabilities. As Professor Moreno says, “there is talk of TMS machines being used on the battlefields within 10 years in vehicles and in 10 years more in helmets.” Why? Being a soldier demands a high level of technical expertise. It is no longer just a case of pointing a gun and shooting. Even combat rifles are now “systems” and mastering battlefield electronics requires a lot of training.

It may seem clear that if you could create a man with no scruples, who feels little pain and no fear, you would have an excellent fighting machine, but this may be a case of be careful what you wish for. We get scared for a reason – to avoid danger to ourselves and others. Fatigue may force us to rest before sustaining damaging injury. Even post-traumatic stress disorder may have a beneficial role. Moral scruples help soldiers to act as an effective team – in battle, troops will always say they are fighting for their mates before Queen and country.

Take away the humanity of the soldiers and there is a danger that the battles and wars we fight will become inhuman as well. Most of all there is, surely, a danger that these techniques, far from producing better soldiers, will actually produce a squad of zoned-out zombies, who will be no match for the determined, driven and highly motivated zealots of the Taliban.

Any Thoughts?

"I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat."

Josef Stalin - Soviet dictator (1926)

Stalin's aim and that of the Soviet Politburo, was to control the world and the spread of communism. So in 1926 they requested that the Academy of Science build a "living war machine".

Stalin ordered a scientist to create a Super-soldier by crossbreeding humans with apes.
Ilya Ivanov, one of Russia's top animal breeding scientists was chosen by Stalin to make the perfect soldier.

Ivanov went to West Africa in 1926 to perform experiments by impregnating chimpanzees. A center for the experiments was also established in Russian Georgia for raising the apes.

The experiments were a total failure and Ivanov returned to the Soviet Union. Sperm gathered from the apes was used to impregnate human volunteers but this too ended in failure.

Ivanov was a devoted believer in Darwinism and sincerely believed Mankind was related to the great apes: orangutan, gorilla, and chimpanzee. But he didn't consider the possibility that we were not.

Great apes have 24 pairs of chromosomes. That is the female has 24 pairs of chromosomes in her egg and the male has 24 pairs of chromosomes in his sperm.

Humans have only 23 pairs of chromosomes and what is truly remarkable about this fact is that we apparently once had 24 pairs of chromosomes just like the great apes!

What science has discovered is that our second and third chromosomes have been fused together. This fusing could only be accomplished in a laboratory by manipulating the egg. No disease or natural genetic condition has ever caused a species to alter its chromosomal structure!

So Ivanov's experiments were doomed to fail from the get go. Without identical numbers of chromosomes two species cannot procreate.

So another way had to be found in order to bring the Super Soldier into fruition.

World War II:

Allegedly…between 1936 and 1941 the Soviet Union created 300 young Soviet soldiers and completely modified their bodies. One of the first experiments, was implanting the soldiers brains with gold electrodes to shut down the pain center.

Their limb bones were replaced with titanium implants that protected the soft tissues against landmines or shells, as well as from gunshot injuries. In this case, any injury was not threatening and would not cause crushing bones and amputations.

During an “investigation” by physician Sergei Konovalenko, a film intended “for official use” was found in Russian archives. The footage looked horrible: a soldier’s leg is cut at the knee and the bone is pulled out, then something metallic is tucked in its place. The commentator says that the operation is performed without anesthesia, as the pain center was removed from the human brain. The soldier exposed to these brutal manipulations is smiling. In the second part the soldier’s arm is cut off at the elbow — a fountain of blood is splashing. And again, the “volunteer” has a humble smile on his face.

The units were sent out to fight on the first day of WWII and the soldiers were completely obliterated by German Artillery.

So I guess we now know where the Wolverine concept came from.

But all in all it's been tried in different ways and continues to be a point of more than just interest to specific parties.

But if politicians and world leaders are shooting for a One World Government, and places like Syria, Libya, Egypt...etc etc.. are holding up progress then they need to be reorganized and set up with a friendlier government that will comply with those in favor of a New World Order...that's why all this is happening. Get the leaders of countries that will not submit to a One World Government and do away with them because they are a threat.

Keep the people living in fear. Fear of being incarcerated in jail, losing their property, their jobs, their constitutional rights...keep them believing that things will get better, keep them distracted with the latest in technology, senseless movies, asinine relationships, stupefied reality shows that dumb down the positive centers of though in the brain....

Because these people are the cattle the ones that will not raise their voices and speak out against a government headed toward totalitarianism.

If a One World Order is the Agenda and everything else is a distraction then the "Super Soldiers" can only be for one other purpose.

To obliterate those individuals in the world that will not submit, for they will be armed and waiting. Those individuals that do not subscribe to the foolishness of government and will not go quietly into the night.

I thought about that too! I remember in Terminator 2 the computer system Skynet gained consciousness and decided to run the show so since these soliders are "enhanced" might that become a possibility for them as well? Also, I cringe thinking of these soliders being unleashed on the general public in the form of martial law, civil war or public uprising. Seems like a .45 isn't enough to put these guys down. I'm scared for people who in the future want to defend their families.

i think they will decide its time for a change of manegemnt when they get turned loose.the NWO carries within itself the seeds of its own destruction as it wont be able to cope with a sudden change of environment.one comet or natural disaster will knock it down nicely.in warhammer theyy space marines and the empeor ofman himslef began as supersoldiers of the oldworld.in sm sterlings draka series the draka began asa spartan like empire till they invented super draka who just took over.

Thats really interesting. I wonder what science you subscribe to since Chromosomes can break apart and they can fuse together. A part of a chromosome can flip around or a part can move to an entirely different chromosome. We see examples of all of these things when we look at human and ape (and any other) chromosomes.

And its more common than you think. People are walking around all over the place with a Chromosome or two flipped or fused and it causes no problem.

So many people fail to understand the science behind Evolution and how it occurred, even the pro evolution sect. I have some awesome links that can give you the basics that alot of people happen to miss when learning about evolution, if you would like.

This goes into discussion which can not be discussed here in this type of thread.

But the point is SECOND & THIRD

Unforeseen consequences, genetically engineering crops was hailed as a "food revolution" that would drastically increase yields. Lord Sainsbury assured the politicians it was safe and fears were greatly exaggerated.

The Greens chopped down the crops and were arrested, they insisted it was unsafe.

The government didn't listen to the warnings that pesticides built into these new crops could spread through pollination etc to other species.

15 years passed by, and what happened?

We now have "Super Weeds" and there is no way of undoing it...

The Greens were right. Therefore any such super soldiers better be fitted with a termination device.

Yea you can thank companies like Monsanto for that. Genetically modified food that is in no way nutritious for the body. Also, damages you spiritually.

People dont realize it, but the government is slowing creeping its way to a complete repression of its people, regardless of what nation you are in. Some are more vocal about their efforts than others.

This concept is just another notch up.

whether it be genetics , robotics, or just plain enhancements, 'They' are doing it... after all, 'They' see 'Them' as doing it first.

Poeticheart, I think you are wrong, but I must clerify my position.
For years, they have experimented on folks in foolish ways without being checked.
Now, due to the internet and the revelation that dark energy does exist they pause.
A great example is the revelation the governments experimented on their own soldiers with radiation and LSD.
More recently, they apologised for deliberately infecting South Americans with STD's syphilus etc for experimentation.

Any fool can see that sort of behaviour is not sustanable,. In the past the end justified the means, no more. The end must be absolutely, quantifiably, justified and subject to later scrutiny. It's a step forward.

I don't have a problem with that.

The idea of super soldiers have been around along time, experiments during WW II just enhanced it. Any world or power would love the idea of a solider that was indestructible.

I respect your opinion (whomever it was that stated they disagreed with me; cant remember your name know that I am typing this :P), but obviously, I disagree with your particular stance, but debate is healthy. So no harsh feelings.

If you want I will tell you, privately, about a bill that the U.S government is very well looking at putting into practice. I cant discuss it here because the government filters would probably block this from showing up, as Google has been told that they can not spread this news to other countries.

Heck, for me... the idea of 'them' not playing with genetics to produce a soldier would be surprising.

what was it, "We have the technology!"

And, they do...

Yes, truly and one can only think of the information that they can't or better yet won't release to the public. Much like the Tuskeegee Airmen.

I'm not a man who is well studied in the presented topic, nor do i know much about a living creatures make up or the intricacies of cell structures genetics or robotics, what I do know is that NOTHING and i do mean NOTHING good has come out of trying to make mankind anything other than it already is. The HULC as was mentioned earlier i have seen in person, being a marine i've had albeit limited exposure to this machine, but exposure nonetheless. Believe me when I say we are still a long long way from making a supersoldier, the HULC thus far has only gone through a series of basic tests, to study a mans reflexes when inside it, the structural integrity of the machine, and what its maximum strength and tow capacity is. The scientists and engineers involved in its construction and development have not yet come up with a way to give it a portable source of energy that would allow it to run for any worthwhile period of time, thats why in every video you see it in its plugged into a collection of cables. Furthermore they have not done weaponst testing on it or with it and have not developed armor that would allow its human operator to pilot it and be protected at the same time. Don't get me wrong, its a very impressive machine, but i wouldn't worry about terminator stomping down your block any time soon, what i would worry about is humankind and its seemingly limitless capacity for violence, ignorance, and blind hatred. We're more likely to bring about a nuclear apocalypse than to develop an ai system that would render mankind obsolete.
