What lurks in the Dark ?
This article by the Independent today announces several new books about the nature of God and the observing sciences. An extract....

Quantum systems create waves or particles with inherent uncertainty. There are situations where a single atomic process can produce, for example, two photons of light with opposite polarisations. Under quantum theory they remain part of the same mathematical equation and in an indeterminate state until the polarisation of one of the photons is observed. But the moment one photon is observed, the polarisation of the other becomes fixed. There has been no communication between the two, yet, by observing one, we are influencing the atomic process which produced both. If that process holds true within a laboratory then it must also hold true across the scale of the universe. It is possible to imagine such an atomic process taking place in a distant galaxy and the photons taking billions of years to reach us.
We would thus be influencing processes within that galaxy by pointing our telescope at it. It is arguable that an observer, be it a mouse, an astronomer or even a computerised detection system, could have the same effect.

My own observation is that if "The Light" pierces the entire universe, and according to this article...
Can remotely alter the outcome and position of photons even from remote Galaxies? Then what of the dark?

I believe the hidden gloom has the same potential and the same influence on supposedly random events.
"God does not play dice...and neither does darkness"

Nothing.

Light is energy...real energy that is discerned physically and measurable. Darkness is simply the absence of energy...thus, nothing inherently energetic exists in darkness, itself. Now...obviously something can hide from visual view in darkness (though not from detectors of other energy emanations such as infra-red), but Darkness, in and of itself, is simply the absence of visual electro-magnetic energy...nothing more.

Yes, but the nothing is out there...

It seems to have mass, it has weight, it is tangible and yet we cannot see it or touch it.

It is altogether very clever stuff, almost... if not as clever as the visible spectrum the stars and planets etc ?

Something that almost seems to oppose the light itself.

Quantum phsicisists have also found there are now opposites for all the tiny quantum particles...

They gave them opposite names.
I have yet to hear of the opposite to the known spectrum, as they have not detected it yet.

So I would like to name it the VR...
Opposite spectrum-for when they do.

-----------------OPPOSING FORCES------
Gamma Rays = Magma rays
X-Rays = XXX-rays
Ultraviolet = Dark Blue
Visible = Silver
Infra-red = Infra Maroon
Radio = Gaga Rays
High Frequency = Psi frequency-ouch.
Medium Frequency= Ghost frequency
Low Frequency = Wraith frequency

There are several great documentaries out there at the moment, my favourite was by Panorama I think, I will check for you.

They mainly concern the worlds leading theoretical scientists arguing about the nature of dark matter.

Matter, which they know is there, in order to balance the weight of galaxies and the way the universe is glued together. They picture it as like a black tar or glue but obviously nobody has seen it.

It simply does not show up on any known gadgets.

I am sure they will get there eventually.

Dark matter...an astronomical term, only...refers to matter that does not give off light and, thus, cannot be perceived. Were you in a spacesuit out there somewhere...you would be, essentially, dark matter.

As I stated earlier here, while things can be found in darkness that cannot be visually perceived, they are not part of Darkness, itself. Again...darkness is simply the absence of light. Thus there is nothing energetic about the darkness itself; it is merely the absence of light...thus, the absence of energy.

Darkness, itself, is...nothingness.

Interesting theory. That being said, I have a question, for Upir,

Assume that the human has a soul and that said soul is pure energy. When a person dies what happens to that persons energy or soul? Does it die with the person or then doe it become light? Also, does light ever become darkness or are the two yin and yang?

I'm actually really interested to hear your take on this.

@sifa - great question...and one that requires a more in-depth discussion of matter/energy,"reality"in the mortal realm and the concept of multiple dimensions. As I am using a cellphone at the moment, I ask that you be patient until I have opportunity to get on my laptop to answer this question properly. Thanks.

As for my prior responses, they weren't theoretical in nature but factual strictly using known definitions and facts to boil down what Darkness scientifically is to its least "common denominator."

Okay... since I was asked, gonna try to tackle my thoughts on the subject of "the soul."

We know from physics that matter and energy are simply manifestations of each other. Energy is converted matter and matter is converted energy. Additionally, both have mass. Einstein's equation E=mc2 partially makes this even more apparent in literally equating energy and mass (E=m... times the speed of light squared).

Given this, the Universe itself is comprised wholly of matter and energy in a constant state of flux alternating to varying degrees between those two states... often occupying aspects of both at the same time (e.g., matter w/ potential/kinetic energy, energy producing material by-products).

Thus, of course, the soul is energy. However, it is my view (which is only worth as much as you've paid for it) that there might be an additional component that makes all the difference: a multi-dimensional component.

With our five extremely limited senses, we are capable of perceiving only three actual physical diminensions that reveal to us to that limited degree the nature of "Reality." Anything of dimensions higher than our three or outside the perception of our limited three-dimensional senses and we haven't a clue about any of it. We are simply incapable of even knowing such exist... though quantum physics and "string theory" strongly evidence the existence of at least 12 dimensions... perhaps more.

We know from near-death experiences, wherein people who are brain dead are revived and accurately report on events that happened sometimes up to miles away from where their three-dimensional bodies lay, that the soul/spirit that pilots that body is not at all limited to any of the parameters of a strictly three-dimensional reality or by the temporal (mortal) nature of that reality.

Therefore... the only logical conclusion I can reach is that our spirit/soul, is actually a multi-dimensional entity temporarily occupying a three-dimensional reality.

It is my view that when our three-diminensional vehicle (body) in which we navigate our limited three-dimiensional "reality" wears out and dies... our soul or spirit... that which "pilots" our body... remains except now without that 3-dimensional "vehicle." It does not need to necessarily "return" anywhere at all as it never "went" anywhere to begin with... it simply chose to inhabit for a time a three-dimensional vehicle within a far-more limited number of dimensions.

A crude analogy... but imagine putting on a virtual-reality helmet and "limiting" for a time your experiences to the computer-generated... greatly limited... world of a CG-created "universe." You are limited within the sensory experience provided by the helmet inside the created virtual "universe." And there can be no doubt but that whatever you are experiencing is going to be LESS than what would be possible outside that computer environment. And when/if the "character" you inhabit inside that environment "dies," you do not "return" from "whence you came" given that you never went anywhere to begin with. Instead... you simply take off the helmet" (exit from the body) and resume your life experience within the far-greater Reality that's always been around you... just as multiple dimensions are always around us, even though, like the computer-generated "character" of virtual reality, we are at present unable to perceive such while inside our mortal "body."

That... in essence... is how I view the "soul." And, yes, that is most definitely only a theory. :)

As regards your question, Sifa, of whether light ever becomes darkness: when examined, the question quickly reveals itself to be untenable.

The question is very much akin to asking: Can a car ever become a roadway without cars?

Let me explain...

All Darkness is ... is the state or condition of an environment that has no energy source that produces Light or into which no Light has been introduced. That's all.

Darkness is simply and purely an environmental state... the state or condition of being without Light.

Turn on a light in a darkened room and you introduce Light into that environment. Turn off the light... and all you are doing is removing that energy from that environment, thus causing that environment to enter into the state or condition of Darkness. Nothing within that environment has changed except for the fact that it no longer contains Light. Light has simply been removed.

Light, on the other hand, never changes given that it is, by very definition, electro-magnetic energy in the visible spectrum). Light is simply... energy. To remove that energy does not change or transform the energy itself.

Thus... Light is and always will be -- energy. Thus... Light can never be without the energy that defines it. That is what Light is, after all. And if it cannot be what it is not, then Light certainly cannot become the environment it illuminates much less the state of that environment without itself (i.e., Darkness).

Therefore... Light can no more become Darkness than a car can become an environment without itself.... like, for example, a roadway without cars.

I hope that helps to reveal a bit better the untenability and irrationality of the question, itself.

I really respect your point of view actually. I think that you may be one of the few on here that can explain yourself without being condescending. (myself included sometimes)

I also really respect your view on the soul. You can explain it logically even with it still being a theory. Something that a lot of other "theories" lack.

Thanks for humoring me :)

Sifa, thank you for your reply ... and please know that at no time was I at all humoring you. Your questions are great ones and are at the heart of the most important and farthest-reaching inquiries we make in Life, itself.

In re-reading my explanation re: Light and Darkness, I find I haven't hit on the best way of explaining how the former is really not at all the opposite of the latter... but don't know how else to better explain it.

I guess it is sufficient to point out that, unlike Light, Darkness has no energy and is a characteristic of void, of emptiness... and not the "abode" of "Evil" or powers (energies) that are opposite of "God." Such a view of Darkness is not at all supported by the facts and is, instead, the product of our own fertile Human imagination given our own instinctive fear of darkness. And, no, that fear does not stem from some bogey-man entity residing in darkness... but instead simply because sight is our greatest physical sense, thus being without sight largely prevents us from knowing what is around us.

And as we all know, fear of the unknown has always been the most terrifying.

Thanks again.

I recently went to a lecture by 3 cosmologists and this was the subject of the lecture, there are two types of energy known as Dark Energy and Dark Matter. The Dark energy is the apparent space between planets, stars and other features of the galaxy, it is made of particles that hold all of these in place and could therefore be described as the opposite of Gravity, it is a result of the Big Bang and thrown out at the time of the Big Bang. Dark Matter is the least known about making up 95% of the Universe, it is made up of unknown particles which are everywhere around us. The Universe is expanding and this is Dark Matter, it is the matter that dark energy works with to keep the Universe in place.
A great book describing all this is:-
Mapping The Universe-Paul Murdin

Darkness is not just the absence of light, everything in the Universe is made up of particles, some are light particles, some dark energy or dark matter particles. Our bodies contain more different particles than can be counted in the Universe. 95% of all particles are dark energy or matter. The Hadron Collider in Genever has been trying to replicate this matter and recently before Christmas was said to have achieved this.

The only thing that Darkness and dark matter/energy have in common is the word "dark." The terms "dark energy" and "dark matter" are fanciful terms invented by astronomers/cosmogists and have no more to do with darkness as a term than a "red dwarf" star does with "little people."

Thanks Upir, intelligence based theory, love it.
Just to add to the dark matter and energy theories, here is how ordinary folks can get their head around it.

In the beggining there is a flat line, just zero nothing...

The line becomes unbalanced in the first few seconds and the universer is created.
On one side a hole is dug, causing also the dark negative stuff...we cannot see.
On the otherside of the hole a pile of dirt is dug out, these are all the stars, planets and energy we can actually see.
Therefore it makes sense to me that there is a "dark spectrum" to balance the visible spectrum. As with Upirs theory on the soul, we inhabit the easy dimensions, but sometimes our soul and senses cross over. Again it is just a theory.

Yes, I really have respect for that theory as it is the only theory that makes sense to me that ive heard thus far. As to what the soul is. I was raised believing that your soul is your consciousness and what makes you, you. Science however, says that without a body you cannot exsist because the chemicals that go through your brain are all that matter.
Its nice to hear something that both makes sense and is logical.

I think Upir has hit on it very well...

Dark matter, Dark energy... to me is just Darkness. It is the abscence of everything, but can hold everything.

When people say they are afraid of the dark, I just smile and shake my head. They ask me if I'm afraid of the Dark, and I say no, I'm afraid of what may be out there, because one never really knows what is in the Darkness.

I think there have been some very well stated points of facts and some very well explained logical theories. I personally do not wish to get into the debate of opposites and duality. I think people can get too hung up on just that issue alone and fail to see that they are the same thing just in different degrees. Yes there is indeed nothing... just as there is something. They exist throughout everything including in you. The empty voids and spaces between the somethings are indeed all over the universe.

I have recently been introduced to the works of Alan Watts who I feel has explained it quite beautifully.

Alan Watts...

"When I consider the weirdest of all things I can think of, do you know what it is? Nothing. Thewhole idea of nothing is something that has bugged people for centuries, especially in the Westernworld. We have a saying in Latin,
Ex nihilo nihil fit
, which means, "Out of nothing comes nothing."In other words, you can't get something out of nothing. It's occurred to me that this is a fallacy of tremendous proportions. It lies at the root of all our common sense, not only in the West, but inmany parts of the East as well. It manifests as a kind of terror of nothing, a putdown on nothing, a putdown on everything associated with nothing such as sleep, passivity, rest, and even the feminine principle which is often equated with the negative principle (although women's lib people don't likethat kind of thing, when they understand what I'm saying I don't think they'll object). To me,nothing—the negative, the empty—is exceedingly powerful. I would say, not
Ex nihilo nihil fit
, but,"You can't have something without nothing."How do we basically begin to think about the difference between something and nothing? When Isay there is a cigar in my right hand and there is no cigar in my left hand, we get the idea of
is
,something, and
isn't
, nothing. At the basis of this reasoning lies the far more obvious contrast of solid and space. We tend to think of space as nothing; when we talk about the conquest of spacethere's a little element of hostility. But actually, we're talking about the conquest of distance. Spaceor whatever it is that lies between the earth and the moon, and the earth and the sun, is considered to be just nothing at all."

You can visit the site I got this from from more if you are interested.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/9835088/Nothingness-Alan-Watts

Now when we discuss the term "Darkness" we can indeed be talking of those empty and void spaces in between the somethings, however there is another "Darkness", that of the visible spectrum of energy and matter and those are indeed somethings with their own somethings/nothings that comprise them. Yes I know this may be a bit confusing but stay with me please. If one can understand this than they may be well on their way to understanding far more than they know.

While it is easy to consider actual light to be the opposite of actual dark, what science shows us (as previously expressed here) is that...using the coin analogy... Light is one side of the coin as being actual energy, while Dark is simply the absence of it; in other words, it is not energy opposite from light. Darkness...actual darkness...is simply neutral.

Interesting post but it make no sense to me as a Lay person.

Why? Mr Planck was a plank, a wooden board beset by nails and rails of his own communities making.

I watched and laughed ....alot when The leading scientists in the UK calculated the chances of a diamond jumping out of its Box.

What a Joke, they calculated(using Master Planks therom) it was like 1 in 200,000000,00000000000000 Billion.
Yet as these chances apply to ALL matter and ALL diamonds in the universe ...

THIS theory would mean matter, diamonds, iron, hydrogen jumped around All the time.
As there are more diamonds than this in the known universe, and they are not appearing in my back -yard will he and the rest of the monkeys please reconsider their position?

A position , which I think you will find is firmly held "in position" by that stuff you cannot calculate and do not understand...I.E Dark energy.
