i have allways wonderd is it a neseaty or a chose my throy is vampires have a low tolerence to light like albinos ect as the human blood cells are dead they do not protect as the skin canot cope with sunlight makeing u weak which would fit with mythology that vapires are stronger at night thus thats wen thay hunt and well my question is ... dose it need to be a coffin or is that just a safty precution form the light ?

It has an aesthetic value, as well it is supposed to have a power over them as well. From their second birth they rise from the item in which they were buried as dead. That is as best I can describe it.

er...I don't think it's a necessity. And can be very uncomfortable. When I was 13, I asked for one to sleep in, and my mother didn't even bother to answer. She just gave me that "what are you on today?!" look...

i would rather my bed than a coffin

Anyone that knows me can attest that I have a low tolerence for the sun, though I'm trying to get over it.

My bedroom IS a giant coffin. Window blinded, flat sheet, and then topped off with a black satin curtain. It is a haven from sunlight, so which is the essential job of the coffin.

Just my two cents

If you go by the mythological vampire and believe that sunlight puts them up in flames then a safety place would do the trick which doesn't have to be a coffin

well I personally prefer a coffin over a bed,but I dont think it's a neccesity.

What if you had a custom made coffin though? I mean with the usually ones they don't really need to be comfortable do they? just a box with pretty lining to stuff a dead body in.
But as it was said before, it depends on which sort of history you're looking at. Some people say they must be in coffins. Some say they must be in their native soil.
Others say it doesn't matter as long as they stay away from sunlight.
