I urge everyone to check out Cancer's journal entry on profile ratings.

I think he speaks the truth, but how can you change the way people hand out ratings and still maintain free choice. Is it wrong to give someone a ten simply because.......

They are your friend?
They are in the same VR Society as you?
You like one small aspect of their profile, despite the rest being lackluster?
They are a premium member and you want them to rate you high?

In my opinion, I would take away the Premium feature of seeing your ratings. This would eliminate the rating blackmail of "I rate what I get". I think many members fall into that trap. I think it is almost impossible to expect unbiased rating when the 'rate-ee' know what you gave them and has the ability to rate your work also.

Other opinions???

Me personally,if someone rates me a 10 i return the courtesy.other times i rate how i find the persons profile,anything with abusive language or antisocial attitude get a low rating.as does most with pornagraphic immagery.theres no need for porn stuff on here.

I rate 10's to my friends.. Because it is a thing I do... With new 'whelps' I DO rate what I think the profile is worth and go back later. I have rated a Master.. a 9.. I got a shitty message for not giving them a 10!
I have been on another site.. it had taken away the option to see who rated one, what rate. What it did was make people Paranoid of their 'friends' under cutting them by down rating them and it encouraged bitching.. and paranoia.. some went on down rate fests with all the users that had rated them that day.. (because it had to be one of them that down rated them) It only perpetuated a new frenzy... NOW, that site is lucky if it gets 10 users on it, per day. I am talking about hotgoth.net

I'm starting a campaign for proper ratings out of the coven. It appears to be something that the Big C is in agreement with.

"I rate fairly and properly" stamp or somesuch for campaign members to use to help publicise it.

i think im ok with nprofile rating myself, i dont always give 10s, if i give a 10 that means they did something i realy like, i will admit if i give a one its because the person spends the whole time talking about how hot they are or how they hate every one or theres 3 words i dont give for that, or instead of rating i just leave the page and not both at all

I don't think taking away the ability to see the rates would solve the situation either.. in fact, it might go in reverse. If noone can see your rate, then it'd be much easier to rate everyone a 1..even if your profile is worth more then that.

The problem with being able to see rates is that people do use it as a 'blackmail'. I find this utterly rediculous but.. it works on quite a number of people "I rate what I get, not what you deserve because I am too mindless to come up with my own rate.. It's safer this way." Or if, low and behold.. you rate anything lower then an 8.. expect to be rated at least 1 point lower then you rated them. ;)

I'll admit.. I rate friends highly.. but in saying that, I don't have many friends. I rate the house I'm in high, because it shows my loyalty.. (that and the fact that most people in my house have worthy profiles)..Other then that, my regular rate is a 9...if your profile is good. I have gone well below that too.. because that's me. I don't take to threats, blackmail what have you.. I simply don't care. I will rate, what I see fit. That's it..

I really doubt the way we rate is really going to change no matter what you do though, unless a HUGE change is implemented on this site in how rating is actually done...as much as we could express how we feel on the subject, it'll continue.. ;)

I dont think taking away the premium 'see who has rated you option' is going to change anything.....As minx said before there's a huge risk involved....As for friends i personally rate according to my personal choices.If i like what i read i'll give them a 10....However i do think that rating your society members a 10 every time is a bad choice.....Thats just a shortcut to win more favor.....But on the other hand your society members are like family so you do feel like giving them a 10...I guess thats why most of them rate that way....

ok... so you are one of the very few who never cares about what you are rated. Who am I to say how you feel, eh? I have my opinion of it. It hasn't changed.

people rating you low because they didn't like your profile......

its your own profile.....not theirs! ...

instead of thinking the profile, aint done the way you like it, how about seeing it, thats how they might like it or actually they tried their best??

I can see KCRC's point but I'm afraid I don't think it would change anything to remove the ability to see what was rated other than to send some people off on a "witch hunt" for whoever they feel down rated them.

I don't return what I am rated good or bad, I rate a profile based on what it says about the owner and what type of work they put into it. I take into account that some people don't have great computer skills but everyone can type so if it reads good I'll give it a 10, without the flashy bells and whistles.

When I do get a 1 it's usually not accompanied by any explaination and I most often message the person and ask what they found wrong, how else can I make it better? But I do not go and rate them a 1, that's childish, though I won't deny it's tempting.

My biggest complaint is I rate new profiles anywhere between 5-9 depending on their content and ask to be notified of updates so I can come re-rate. If they would just put a note in the My Mascara section I'd happily go do it, I don't mean an individual message but most never do.

KC is on the right track, but as usual there is always room for arguement, but not from me.

I may be one of the few, but I have not rated ANY profile that has either rated me low, or just perused my site and or porfolio lower than 10. That is just my way of common courtesy. The Prince instills free will to all members, I take this free will and use it to its fullest. If I were ordered not to give just 10's, I would refrain from doing so.

I will maintance this aspect until the free will is taken away. As this is what I choose. Therefore, I leave the judgements to all others. Take me for what you will.

While this does seem to be a touchy subject I myself find that no matter what is said I will rate how I deem fit..and that is the way of all here on VR. I find that if I have learned something about the person, I will rate higher than if the profile has nothing on the page of who that person is. That is the only signifigant difference in my rating system.

dont rate based on it not what you what it to look like...hell..if all the profiles looked alike..then that would be boring!

I rate at first a 10, why? cause it shows, that I have look, read, and since the person took the time to actually sign up, and could be busy reading the vr manual or scrolling on how to do their profile, so I give them a smily start with a 10.

After if I found out they rated me lower, to "thank me for taking the time to apreciate their effort" then I thank them the same, someone said once: If its good enought for them to give, then its good enought for me to give hey I dont think I am superior so why should I give superior?

I forgot to mention one detail, I also consider when I rate that, what I see and consider good or worth MY taste, might not be the same as the person who made the profile, does it make a difference if a person has NO scroll box, because they dont like it? Nope, does it make a difference if a person has No flashy colors? Nope, its their right, Does it make a difference if a person has NO background, Nope, cause its not an obligation, if a member is higher then moskito, then I look, if the person has info on them, or what they like, its not flamming, its respectfull, we dont have to like the same things, there is some pics, and with or without 1 or 2 quizz then they still get a 10.

If none of the above and are a moskito and higher, then I simply dont rate.

I wait. till there is some changes. That way my 10's are fair and my rating are aslo.

Now as to the other hypocrisy like ratings, it is no worse than the flagrant copyright infringement going on here. Or the rampant favorism or the blatant misdirection. I say leave a sleeping dog lie. If no one really cares and is really just here to enjoy the stay, talk with friends, act tough or whatever, then what harm is there? It is not real life, no one is getting hurt either physically or financially.

OK, I get the consensus that my suggestion of eliminating the Premium feature of being able to see what you are rated is not a solution. What IS the solution.

I submit that if Caner is utterly appalled at the current state of ratings that SOMETHING is bound to change. What suggestions do YOU have to make ratings fair and based on the actual worth of the profile in question?

I don't think there will necessarily be a change. Because there are after all... several utterly appauling things happening on Vampire Rave :)

its hard to catch my attention...so when a profile catches my eye, i read...look at pics...first number pops i my mind...i give..

I think rating based on premium is basic hypocrisy.

Rating is as others have said a free will, and its fine like that. I will admit recieving 10 is pleasing, but when its given only because of the "extra" features a pm grant you to add on your profile, its not as rewarding as one given because you are being yourself.

I don't have a solution to the ratings problem. I mean, if we take away the ratings - how will all the little kiddies know that they're popular? After all, some of us might not be here for votes but some just view it as another popularity contest. You can't take that away from them!

ANYWAY.

I used to vote a profile fairly - you got what I felt you deserved. I didn't judge by looks of the profile. I judged by words. Anyone can spend time and make something LOOK pretty. But can you actually speak well? It takes time and effort to put your thoughts into something and to do it grammatically well. Unfortunately, that just got me low rated and blocked.

So, we all learned that people don't want the truth. Oh wait. I already knew that - I work in customer service. People only want to be coddled and told that, no matter how shitty, their page is number 1.

Eliminate ratings all together. Utter nonsense anyway having to rate every flipping thing the VR database to gain levels. Or if you must have them then only allow it from the most senior of houses and covens. Then you won't have 3000 people to look after as an individual. They could delegate it to someone of thier own choosing but would be responsible for the rate as it bore thier house/coven mark.

Additionally, don't even allow ratings until the rank of Caliph as that is when forced induction can happen anyway and that is the time that everyone really get evaluated anyway, not when they are a newby...lol.

I agree with Image, the drama is fluent at this time within the Rave. I would like to make one thing perfectly clear from my last post...I do read all site information, so do not get me wrong when I rate all 10's, I do look, listen, and feel the site for what it is, and 95% of the time, there are some DAMNED BLOODY EXCELLENT profiles that I have seen, and heard.

Well, I think I have the answers I was seeking.

It is virtually impossible to "fix" the rating system to result in fair rating. Some may not like it but the profile of a whelp who's entire profile consists of "If you wanna no jus ask" will continue to be rated equivilant to that of someone who pours their heart out on their profile and also has amazing graphic content.
