Alot of people claim they are lycans. I want to know, sense they are, can we see some pics of them change? or do they just believe they are?

do they just have the traits but are not lycans or what?

the discussion is...whats really real, and whats made up?

Like the 100s of times this topic is brought up...Lycan is short for Lycanthropy or Lycanthrope...Lycan was made up for the movie series Underworld.Like Vampires they don't exist...people may think they are or live as though they are...but they are not.

I think it’s more of a matter of assuming ones own definition of his/her identity to affiliate or associate the difference they do not seem to have with society. And possible taking on that personification.

“A personification is a figure of speech that gives an inanimate object or abstract idea human traits and qualities, such as emotions, desires, sensations"*, such they see themselves as that particular character in a movie and since most fiction is biased on fact thus they can relate to some of the strange things that none can explain be it mental such as lycanthrope which is a mental disorder look into it I have no need to post it since I am sure this has been covered, or phycal a rare blood disorder such as porphyria in which this disorder makes your mouth appear vampiric again read on it I have and I also have this disorder NO I am not nor do I think I am a vampire .So please people don’t ask me about it if you want to know more do your own research and learn something new ;)

*taken from Wiki.

Please people, don’t let your good points get lost in bad spelling, grammar, punctuation. Use spell check if spelling isn’t your strong suite and make sure to cite your sources if you copy and paste. Thank you.

The does have an affect on people in different ways...the moon as an affect on the earth itself...the tides are because of the moons pull on the earth.Lunatic comes from Lunar...the moon...it has been noted the moon as an affect on ones brain chemistry.Lycanthropy is basically a chemical imbalance...to where the person truly believes they are a wolf or can turn into one.

When the line between role play and assumed identity is crossed, their are people that once played a holy man/guru, would actually fall into the role, and assume the identity. This provides an alter ego to some as well, they suit their definition to leave inquiries as to establishing their claims as challenges to their claim, responding with things like, "Well you cannot prove that I am not." when actually we can. I am sure it is an interesting thing to see a person that claims to be a mythical creature end up in a hospital. Some do it for shock value, others do it for popular alignment.

Role play has many faces though, and is not limited to any one genre of fiction, and lore.

First off ... Lycanthropy was not made up for the movie Underworld. They used the word and it was used in reference to werewolves but in some countries it can mean someone who shapeshifts into a bear or a hyena or even a dog. It is technically incorrect by the root of the word.

It is from a very old Greek Legend. This is where it came from.

One of the earliest known legends of the werewolf is found in Greece. King Lycaon of Arcadia is said to have served Zeus a plate of human flesh. Zeus was outraged and insulted and changed the king into a wolf. The word Lycanthrope comes from this legend.

I am not giving a link because it is from one of my articles.

As for Otherkin, even the term otherkin is less than twenty years old and they weren't using lycan really. You heard were-wolf, were-bear, were-cat. Now they use Therianthrope more often which is basically man beast. Most believe they shift spiritually or astrally and then some believe they are a person who was actually a wolf and incarnated into a human body but they are not a werewolf. This would fit with certain Eastern philosophies but not western.

In folklore one of the hallmark signs for a werewolf was cannibalism. Some believed also that when a werewolf was killed they could turn into a powerful vampire and this is part of why these two creatures are linked in so many people's minds. Also some of the words in foreign countries were originally identifying the werewolf and now are used as a word to mean vampire. The werewolf has many names, in France it is the loup garou.

As to whether it was fact, I don't know there are a lot of stories about them all over the world. New Orleans has stories and uses the French word and Rougarou. So it is pervasive in folklore.

I was hearing the term Lycan way before the movie Underworld ever was even thought of, back in the 90s.
A guy i know from a vampire chat had an intense interest in them and was always talking of them and what they could do around that time but i honestly never asked him if he truly believed they existed for real.

There is also Clinical lycanthropy which is a psychiatric syndrome that involves a delusional belief that the affected person is, or has, transformed into an animal. It is named after the mythical condition of lycanthropy, a supernatural affliction in which people are said to physically shapeshift into werewolves. The word zoanthropy is also sometimes used for the delusion that one has turned into an animal in general and not specifically a wolf.

Here is a reading that goes more into the psychological aspect of Lycanthropy:

Howling at the Moon: Modern-day Lycanthropy

Yes there is a clinical condition as well as conditions for the others. Stating you were Lycan wasn't heard much as I said previously but its just a short version. Just like people say Therian instead of the long version. BUT even though people are using the term now they aren't generally meaning they are a werewolf but I cannot vouch for everyone.

Just most of those I do know in the Otherkin community mean they are an incarnated wolf. So they have some of the instincts of the wolf. For instance being very protective of family and friends...the pack instinct. Things like that. There are stories for hundreds of years about Lycanthropy but there are others words for it in various languages. It's like any of these topics, you can't prove they exist or disprove it really because it is what one believes. You have two schools of thought...the more man beast sort of creature and a person who would totally change into a wolf as in the movie "Wolf" where you see that in the end Michele Pfeiffer could completely change her form and not just be covered in fur and look half human/wolf. So there are so many varieties of beliefs on what they are in general I don't think I can definitively answer this even though I made a previous attempt.

I know in France way back they had a werewolf hunting craze. They believed it and killed people for it. Nowadays we feel we are so modern we are apt not to believe much of anything at all unless the person comes to our door rings the bell and is card carrying. :)

Complexes, usually of Dissassociation , are likely when a persons alter ego overshadows their defective ego, this would be the phase when people stop claiming to be some mystical being(or even actual profession) and start acting as if they where, this person is likely to be found running around in the woods naked, or hanging out in .. say stables (if they had an alter ego as a horse trainer). What trips a person into such extreme identity changes, some may have started for fun, like role playing, or movie fascination. They may have others that they role play with, and after awhile the person steps up their assumed role to show devotion to the genre, promoting themselves as more "hard core" in their acceptance of such things.

Then there are those, and Bleach makes a valid point, that want to see hpow much fun they can have yanking peoples chains.. by playing the role of someone that actually thinks they are a werewolf.. yet to ask someone what their definition of such things is, can uncover some interesting definitions, that could offer clarity to their claim.

I hate being limited on the computer.. I wanted to add as well, one other likely explanation someone would claim to be a mystical creature.. Theatric Socialization.. Part of the allure of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, this Theatric Socializing Role Play, usually buy very convincing Talent.. is the reason I am A Ghost. Because I can act as a ghost creatively, The operative word being create, as in an imaginative presentation of an assumed Role, or even identity, I think that in say 10 people that claim to actually be some mystical creature you may find some in this capacity, the ones that actually have creative presentations, and socialize through it.. I actually enjoy following, the rest seem to do it only for only for bolster.

I agreed with those both, some just say people are crazy for such things, they miss the performance potential that some put into such things. Sadly some use the performance of creative people to foundation their delusions. When the line is crossed and they start running around naked in the woods, is that when it is time for an intervention? Or is it when they start attacking the neighborhood pets? I actually would see running around the woods naked like animals as an entertaining evening BTW, but would be very selective as to the woods I used for such activity.. I have witnessed people go through the phases of Role Identity, it took him a year to drop the role.

The pressing questions that have come along in response to post, leave me to think that someone is pressuring another into supporting their claim, This I think would make a good thread, Pressing an assumed Identity on others (as a condition of association, is wrong) for example, If a friend that makes claims of being a super natural creature to people and the friend of that person is put on the spot.. with" You believe I am a {insert Alter Ego}, tell them you believe me." No that is when reality confronts them, they should support their own claims, and further more should take into account their motive for presenting their claim to people like that.

Are they mental?

there could develop complexes, and some claim to be something or are even lead to believe they are something.

I just had a friend bring up a very good point.. some may have been introduced to such concepts (being a mystical creature) by others, they may show favor, and social acceptance for those that share there beliefs, or share their claim. So after being attracted to a Role Playing Character, they feel the next notch up in Standing is to assume the popular group identity.

So in that respect a Role Playing, or Alter ego, can turn another on to being a creature.

I believe this once was on issue in the 80's,With White Wolfs Dungons and Dragons. In wich some people took on the roll of a hunter and actually went around killing people.Believeing they were deamon hunters,Others were arrested for ruitualistic crimes because they acutally thought they were high priests in some mystical
society.I really believe that roll playing can influence ones behavior and you mentiond the Alter Ego but could this all so lead to or have possabley came from someone,Who is suffering from MPD?In wich one of that persons identity fuses with the orignal identity giveing delusions?

I find lycans to be true beings. My friend happens to be one and though i've never seen transformation, I would think it dangerous to do it and who would take the picture if there was one the person could be in danger. So I think they exist just under current, though some maybe confused and think they are there is no doubt about that.

Lycans are made up. There were various groups of people in history however that believed they could be possessed by animal spirits and would have rites to encourage this, usually before a battle. This even goes with the idea of having images of animals on their armor and weapons to help them in combat.

As for the moon affecting people, I did hear an interesting theory once. Since the moon affects the gravitational pull of the earth, most notably in the tides, this would also affect people. We are mostly liquid and water so the moon's gravity pull would affect us slightly and could make slight variations on our inner workings based on this gravity pull. Might account for people feeling different during stages of the moon.

When the Ego is unstable, can the Alter Ego be a dominate factor? what is reenforcing the persons assuming of the role? Are there others around that person that only pretend, yet appear to one of their group that they are actually assuming the identity? What state is the persons Ego in. Have they endured trauma? Creating a need to escape, to a more powerful persona?

Are they claiming to be (and looking for confirmation) or convinced that they are , have others feed their assumed identity.. example if I met you and claimed to be a Rodeo Clown.. and you lets say, where really fascinated by Rodeo Clowns.. and I am not a Rodeo Clown, but I know enough about them to pass as one, Jargon, popular established rodeo clown history.. yet i can only go so far on claiming i will eventually be asked, when are you performing.. so what was the reason for me claiming to be a Rodeo Clown.. Perhaps because my boring life(I fear) would not interest you enough, so i Play the Rodeo Clown around you.. now lets say you introduced me to two friends as a Rodeo Clown.. there for enforcing the Depth of the Role. BTW I am Not a Rodeo Clown, though I do give them My Admiration..

Assumed Identity.. not necessary Multi-personality disorder, Or manifest Multi-personality disorder, MPD only being a collective of Complexes, though that could create an impressionable person problems in deeper role assumtion.. if it was preexisting.

You know if someone has anger issues, they may just go to the extreme and think they are something supernatural.
