I live here, and have never heard of it. And I have been here since and before Katrina, and heard no reports of this. I have heard of the Chupacabra... but not here. The only Grunch we hear of is 'Benny Grunch and the Bunch' A local comedy and parody musical group.
From what I have read, these 'sightings' started in the 60s. But must not be of much talk these days though. At least for the least 16 years I have been a Louisiana resident.
I must honestly say that I have never heard of this legend before!
I am very intrigued. Did you imply that there is suspected to be more than one of these creatures out there?
It sounds to me like a weird cross between the old "Satan" and a vampire... To be honest it sounds rather terrifying!
It may well be that they have also been "displaced" - if they feed on people then they must go with them if they abandon New Orleans...
If they do in fact feed on humans, I would think there would be more mysterious killing and disappearance of people. For a creature to live so close to a human settlement just doesn't make sense. It would be smarter for the creature to live in the forest thus the lack of information about it.
Touche, although if it didn't need that much blood, would it not be able to get away with living in close proximity to humans without ever really being seen?
Maybe it hibernates or something lol I don't know :P
My husband Is from La and lived most of his life there. And my brother in law was born and raised in the bayou pronounced BI-YOU.
The creature that is discribed is a pan

Sorry didn't mean to be touche, just didn't make sense to me.
Now that does make sense, about the inbred people, that may be possible for me to believe.
Though a pan, is odd...sorry now I am lost in thought.
yep part human part goat you posted it up top so i thought i would give a picture .To what was discribed as your grunch how ever a pan is all so mentiond as a goat god in an inverted pentagram long story diffrent discussion.(Baphomet)
Dear lady Imageswithwords, I also was a resident in the greater New Orleans area (Slidell) from 1992 to 2003 and had never heard of the Grunch. It however has been tied with two other NOLA legends the Devil Baby and Marie Laveau. An except from an article on the Devil Baby.
An old Voodoo Hoodoo story says Marie Laveau Castrated the Devil Baby when he was born. Because she wanted him to produce no more of his evil kind. The two bloody testicles fell to the floor as she used a very sharp hoodoo voodoo blade. Immediately they turned into a male and female Grunch, who it is said actually attacked the great Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. The Grunch are said to have almost killed her with their fierce bites and punching. The dark evil terror the old Voodoo Queen must have been unbearable as she struggled under their great strength before she fainted. When she awoke the Grunch and the Devil Baby were gone. Laveau was near death after this and many have said this is when Marie Laveau gave up her Voodoo Hoodoo ways and went back to being a good Catholic woman. SouRCE
I find it an interesting bit of NOLA folklore and thought it worth examining. Thank you. :)
*imagesinwords edit* I actually live in Slidell and have for 6 years, before then, I was in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans :)
My greatest apologies for the misnomer for Lady Imagesinwords. :(
Sincerely
Michael
Thats gotta be the most absurd thing I have ever heard of, even for NOLA. The only "creature" that has been rumoured to live in the bayou's is the Loupe Garou. This creature has only been sited in the swamps.
Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me, stupid name for it as well "Grunch." Sounds like a reiteration of grinch to me. To tie a simple speculated myth to Marie Laveau is a bit of a long shot since she did not mess with the workings of creature manifestation...Sounds more like a Satanic ritual in my point of view. Hell, even pan sounds too outragous to be considered.
I am sure this thread like all the other speculated myths from individuals who are bored, tending to come up with their own creations, will die in its own time.
I think myth, folcklor and legends have always been a strong feature and created a limitless ideas and fantasy the humna mind can come up with, sorry to say this but I am sort of St-Thomas, unless I see I will not beleive.
Still somethings I admit can not be proven with a logical approche, but in this case logic rules my opinion.
Friend, Grunch comes from a road south of New Orleans in Saint Bernard parish, not from Doctor Seuss. I am only synthesizing information collected from other sites to bring the legend to the group. Myths and legends have some basis from the past as do "Urban Legends". Cryptozoologists chase stranger prey and find extinct or unknown species.
The story that you read is indeed a misconception...The only legend that comes from St. Bernard is the Loupe Garou.
Who ever wrote about this supposed "grunch" merely got the name as well as the description wrong. Or just reiterated the story to their own liking.
Yep, loup garou and the Honey Island Swamp monster is all I have ever heard of here.
One more article adding some information about the Grunch , the Montauk Monster, and the Honey Island Swamp Monster, a cryptozoological relative of Bigfoot. LINK
Everytime I see this thread, I think of the Grinch. Maybe a southern style way of saying Grinch.
Lady Jamie, the name has no Dr. Seuss connections. :) They are a bit ugly and scary like the Grinch. The name comes from the road "Grunch Road" where they were first found near NOLA.
Michael
I had lived in NOLA, there is NOOOO such thing as either the "Grunch" or "Grunch Road"!!!
I think someone has been watching the movie: Beast of Brair Road one toooo many times....
The only beast of Louisiana is the LOUPE GAROU!!!
OMG. I am totally lost. "chupacabra", like the one from mexico, the one who kill animals by sucking their blood/? Mmm ...almost impossible to believe.
When I use to travel with the carnival, we use to go to shreeveport, louisiana(i think I speld that right) and there were big dicussions all the time about going to new orleans, and seeing the dark magic (realm) as they called it.. My meaning is this, its known for its stories of black magic, and vampires theme.. They make new stories every year about new orleans, maybe this is something new to add to the list to get more publicity??
FYI LOUP GAROU The French name for a werewolf, sometimes used in English.
My own research but ill post a reference.
I grabbed my off line Websters dictionary And looked it up.
Wow ...well have never heard of Grunch either one of my sisters lived down in NOLA for years and years a told us many thing but never heard of that, just the others that have been mentioned above
