Evolution requires certain sacrifices. how can the human race expect to thrive without, so called pollutions and such. We would not be here if things where different.. i am all for a 'greener world' and no doubt the future will progress to such a state.. after all the earth as we know it is maybe only a day old, in our time line of things.... And the fact that most people have a very hard time looking after themselves they do not have any 'time' to worry about anything else.. Myself. i would love to put an end to war and suffering.. but this is something that has to be.... you need higher powers.....

what we need is a government that actually does listen to all it's people....not just the ones with millions who want big business to stay where it is instead of using their wealth for the betterment of all....I wouldn't even mind paying the costs for a greener world.....but all the protests in the world won't do anything without the right backing.....get educated and in the field.....governments don't listen to the uneducated......they rarely listen to firm science..

i totally agree with all comments.... and to think the brazillian government is signing a contract that will reduce the Amazon to 50% its size, something like 4X the size of portugal will be destroyed.... Its absolute murder!!!!! And yet no one is prepared to do anything about it in a substantial and pro-active way, apart from partitions.....

Though i understand the average person does not have the time or money to do much, There is a need for our society to actually as a whole, overthrow governemnt power in the need for our demands to be heard... (a tad dramatic)

Though like many average people, the destruction of the natural world is given a blind eye, as is the slave trade and sweat shops that still operate.... instead of boycotting companies that important clothing and other materials that are made from the exploitation of nature and humans alike, we turn the other cheek and still buy it...

action needs to be taken, and quickly

It seems that most people (and governments) only think about what they need right now and in the immediate future. They think that the earth will always have plenty, or that whatever god or gods they believe in will always provide, no matter how much they take. It infuriates me. Environmental education on a massive scale might not be a bad idea.

I agree with you about patience. It makes sense that if we were in less of a hurry, we wouldn't need as much, and would be able to spend more time enjoying what we have. It's something that I've been trying to practice - with limited success. :-(

I'm with you Moreish, except I don't recycle. I consider government-led recycle drives to be nothing short of behavior modification.

To all the tree huggers:

I work hard, damn hard. And I have earned everything I have. If I want to buy a $85,000 H2 that gets 3 miles to the gallon, that's my business. I've earned the right. If I buy a chunk of land and want to clear-cut it, that's my business. You have no right to dictate to me how my land is used - whether it be a strip club or a nature preserve.

Finally, tree's are a renewable resource. Unlike finite resources such as gold, tree's can be grown.

I hate tree huggers.

What a deppressing thread! I agree with one of my personalitys I love to sculpt wood therefore I benefit from cutting, but At the same time there are tree's In places that I hold sacred. On a lighter note those interested in mythology or demonology I should say there are supposed type's of demons that specialize in uprooting trees. Read from the book who's in hell.

Cancer, you made an interesting point about recycling. I've recycled cans and bottles for several years, and separate at least some of my trash each week, but the behavior modification idea never ocurred to me. Now that I've thought about it, it makes sense! I'll still recycle, though, but now I'm wondering what else the government will come up with!

It's really hard to debate a tree hugger. They tend to think from the heart and not the mind. It 'feels good' to love trees.... But the end to all cutting is not practical.

  • Every library is filled with 1000's of trees that gave their lives so that humans may better themselves with books.

  • Millions of people live in wood homes so they don't have to live in mud huts or caves.

  • Myself, like so many others, use wood to heat their homes. Wood is cheaper, more efficient, and less damaging to the environment than petroleum products.

  • Entire local economies are based on wood consumption. Small towns who depend upon paper mills, loggers, lumber production, sales, and transport, home builders, furniture builders, magazine companies, newspapers, book authors (like ElderDaniel), computer users who print anything out, piano and other wooden instrument manufacturers and users, and so many other areas...

  • The plastic bags you get your groceries in came from petroleum products that took millions of years to form in the earth. Is it really better to dig up such a finite resource versus utilizing trees which grow on the surface and have a re-population rate of 5 to 50 years?

  • It's a lie that trees provide all (or most) of the earth's oxygen. About 90% of earth's oxygen comes from microbial emissions. The remaining 10% is attributed to plant life.

  • Contrary to environmental populist belief, there is no tree shortage on the planet. Anyone that is well-traveled can confirm this. If every logger in the U.S. started cutting trees in the east and moved westward, they'd never reach the pacific before millions of trees regrew behind them.

  • My God, we're talking about trees here. I have some sympathy for animal rights, as animals at least have a central nervous system. But trees? I don't understand why activists don't put their efforts toward a more useful goal - like helping hunger, aids, or war victims worldwide. With all the human suffering tree huggers look to focus on tree conservation?

It is not my intent to belittle anyone's philosophical belief. This tree nonsense is just ludicrous to me...

I lied. I do have something to add. I believe that trees are like the phallus' of the Earth. I believe that trees are are what produce life. Trees make homes, trees make shelter, trees provide us with necessities. Most of all trees provide us with books, and books provide knowledge. Without trees we would have far less luxuries as books and we'd all be morons. Trees ARE indeed replaceable though. So I really see absolutely no point in people being all "tree huggish" when they can take the tree that is being chopped and scatter all of the seeds and make thousands of new trees. In fact I would believe that planting thousands would be much wiser than saving one tree. Appreciate things like trees but don't obsess over their lives, because just like humans they are replaceable. Like I said, trees are the phallus' of the world, all we and trees need to do is reproduce and WHAM, new life.

The reason to live: to each their own mate. In the beginning when we are first born we have no reason. As we age and develop, though, we acquire a reason, be it friends, family, ambitions, anything something drives us to continue living. Even if we don't realize or admit it, as long as we go on we have a reason. That's why few are ever able to commit suicide succesfully. Those who do are lost and truly deserve our sympathy as they have forgotten their reason(s). Course I choose the not even acknowledge their (prior) existence cause they didn't have the balls to tough it, they're just extremely selfish. But I digress. So yea......what was I saying....? ^__^

The human race has always been this way... what should we do? Things have gone so far now that you cant feel inner peace from recycling your rubbush or leaving food out for the birds can you!? Unless we have a complete overhaul (and what would that be) then what can we do?
