The Ultimate Vampire Resource and Directory

Was a story and film based on the mysterious dissapearence of three students from a nearby school.
There where reported strange vortex phenomenon around the rock,and the story lends to that.
Has anyone heard of this story? Or know anything about the history of it?

Have looked it up just based on murders around tht time , would love to see more on the unsolved mystery as they call it.....

The unsolvable mystery of the disappearances was arguably the key to the success of both the book and the subsequent film. This aroused enough lasting public interest that in 1980, a book of hypothetical solutions (by Yvonne Rosseau) was published, called The Murders at Hanging Rock.[2]

In fact, Lindsay's original draft included a final chapter in which the mystery was resolved. At her editor's suggestion, Lindsay removed it prior to publication. Chapter Eighteen, as it is known, was published posthumously in 1987 as The Secret of Hanging Rock by Angus & Robertson Publishing.[3]

The novel is written in the form of a false document, implying that it is based on a true story, and even begins and ends with a pseudo-historical prologue and epilogue, adding to the overall feeling of mystery. However, while Hanging Rock is a real geological feature near Mount Macedon, the story is entirely fictional. Lindsay has done little to dispel the myth that the story is based on truth, in many interviews either refusing to confirm it was entirely fiction, or hinting that parts of the book were fictitious, and others were not. Valentine's Day, 14 February 1900 was a Wednesday, not a Saturday as depicted in the story.

Appleyard College was to some extent based on Clyde Girls' Grammar School at East St Kilda, Melbourne, which Joan Lindsay attended as a day-girl while in her teens. Incidentally, in 1919 this school was transferred to the town of Woodend, Victoria, in the immediate vicinity of Hanging Rock.[citation needed]

Thank you for the info..and I had often wondered because I went to Clyde up until it merged into Geelong ,before reopening as Braemar.But oddly , during my time there,there was an incident involving three girls who dissapeared overnight,but no one was killed and that story had been written prior.Hanging Rock was a regular thing for us,and it really is a weird place with weird stories and rumors.And the school ,in which the original building which was a sanitorium,is still standing,and was steeped in all kinds of crazy stories..mostly about the tower,which incidently ,my name is still carved in there to this day.
So any info anyone can find,I would be really grateful.

It helps to be Australian to know anything about Hanging Rock... I remember having to watch and discuss it for school. The consensus being that it was given supernatural overtones to make the disappearance and suspected murder of schoolgirls a bit more hype. The movie's not bad however. I'd avoid the sequel though.

I never got to see either,but it was a topic of discussion all the time between us girls.I went and lived at Clyde for 5 years.And I found it interesting that they would make a movie and story about HR,because it really does have some strange undertones .So I was thinking that perhaps the fact that it is a volcanic plug and due to its geological aspects that it might indeed have some weird phenomenon going on.Although,I'll be honest,I never saw anything really strange..only got odd feelings ever so often.
Have you even been there ? Or have you ever heard any other stories floating around about it D?

It's supposed to be an Aboriginal dreaming spot. That's never really been confirmed though.

Btw,the school is located approximately 2 miles from the rock.That vid..where it shows the school,that isnt Clyde ,our building had a main tower,which,as I said was an epicentre for all the ghostly things that supposedly went on there.Clyde is actually located on top of the mountain,HR at its foot.Sometimes we could see weird lights overhead and things,which were always attributed to aircraft..but there were a few UFO sightings that we heard of.

UFO sightings in that part of the country are very common... it's always in the news that someone down there saw a UFO. Lol.

See now it seems I do remember something being mentioned about that at one point,but it was really never brought up in the discussions much.Thanks for that link,I will go have a look..

Thats an interesting link D,thank you. LOL yep,there was always some reason to get scared.And where the school is situated on Macedon,you could stand in the main drive and lot and look out across the valley for miles and miles.Its really no wonder that there are alot of ufo sightings.

What purpose does such suggestion of super natural going-on serve? To suppress something? To allude to something else? SUicide pact? Aborigiany scapegoating?

I dont really know what it would serve other than to lend mystery to the story.But one cant deny that the place is weird to begin with Dab.
And Ive been having a hard time finding info like that on it,its pretty obscure...but what is there,is alot more interesting than I have anticipated.

how about the attraction the place has for people with criminal intent?

Im not so sure about that Dab..when I was there,there where no attractions of that sort or money making schemes pretaining to the folklore.The stories where just stories....There was a race track,but thats been there for years and operates on its own accord.
So I cant really answer other than what I knew of the place then.

The area's currently a national park. With a good cafe, for all reports. I don't think there's much in the way of criminal intent happening there these days...

Well, I have seen the Peter Weir film a dozen times, it's a great film. But Oceanne, it was also fiction. I researched it and it turns out the 3 girls were found dead in a rock slide. ;)

Yes Dark,thank you for that info.And I do understand that the story is fiction.However,I have been doing a little research also,and there seems to be a bit more to the place,other than thestory of PAHR itself...Which I think is kindof interesting.Its deffinately a place of power.And from what I've been able to find,so far,Im pretty suspect that the leyline grid there is strong.And not only that,but it is an area of ancient volcanic acivity.Underground water systems and such..which could account for some of the UFO sightings there etc...But Im still looking into it.
Anything else you might happen to find would be appreciated.

The property contains extensive Aboriginal sites and artefacts, including several ceremonial sites once used by the Wathaurong people. This is documented in a report by the Victorian Archaeological Survey in which they state … "The archaeological sites located on Oasis are representative of the types of Aboriginal sites that would be expected to occur in the region. From an archaeological perspective the sites located are significant for a number of reasons. The educational value of the sites is high particularly when viewed as a complex of sites representing the remains of a range of past activities by the groups of Aboriginal people who lived in the region. The relatively high number of sites located within a confined and easily accessed area provide an ideal opportunity to be used as examples for illustrating the nature of past Aboriginal occupation in the area."
The land which is now Oasis Anu Ta, and surrounding district south of the Werribee River, was home to a small tribal group of 20-25 people. The land was special to them because of the ceremonial sites it contained. Centrally located in the property is a scarred tree which marks the centre of a men’s corroboree site. This was exclusive to the men, and they would meet there to confer about their hunting and other activities, and to conduct ceremonial dances. Another site on the river flats is marked by a circle of large rocks, and it was used by men and women ceremonially only during full moon. The men were the hunters, and the women gathered roots and berries, and were in charge of the healing skills. A women’s site is located further upstream, which was where they conducted their women’s business. The group would remain in one place for a few weeks, and then move on, ensuring that they did not excessively exploit the gift’s of the Earth Mother in any place they resided. That way there was always abundance.
There are now few, if any, living descendants of the Wathaurong people. There is a shameful history of genocide in the area, for they are known to have been hunted like animals by some of the early white settlers. Introduced diseases also took a heavy toll. One Aboriginal man who I came to know quite well was Adrian Jackson, who was chairman of the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative when I met him in 1992. Adrian told me that his grandmother was a tribal woman and that she had taught him the culture when he was a child. He experienced many signs when he visited Oasis, including a hawk that always greeted him and guided him to certain sites. He and others experienced shaking in the legs when they stood in certain places. Wathaurong determined to buy the property, but were refused funding by the government of the time.
For those who are interested in geomancy, Oasis Anu Ta lies at the intersection point of seven ley lines. It also lies at the centre of a gigantic cross defined in the landscape by four surrounding mountains which form the pattern of the major stars of the Southern Cross constellation. The fifth star point is located at Cobbledick’s Ford. I doubt if the Aboriginals knew of the configuration, but I am certain that those mountains would have been sacred to the tribes of the area. The ley lines would have been identified as spirit tracks.

I have driven pass this rock and it is an eriee place. There are many stories behind this mystery from someone murdering them to alien abduction. It is a mystery that will never be unravelled.

Yes it is a very eriee place. A lot of history and mystery surrounds it.
