while having a conversation with my man of ultra intellect , he was trying to give me a history lesson on the first vampires ...I rolled my eyes because there are so many stories out there how the first vamp came about his idea was first of all the decomposure that the body goes through making the finger nails look like they have grown and the hair and gums receding making their teeth look longer and bloat, making them look full of food BUT the main thing is the acids coming from the mouth would rot the shroud and it would look like they were eating the shroud ...he said they then started to stick rocks into the mouths of the dead so they could not eat their shrouds ...part of this I am familiar with but the whole shroud eating thing totally a mystery to me... I want to know if anyone else has any info on this as fact if they have heard of it and if so about what era did this take place or what countries ?????

I didn't read any of the articles, but I put "shroud eaters" into google and found this site. It has a GREAT deal of information on what it claims to be the "traditional European vampire."

Otherwise, I was unable to find anything about the time period or geographical area where this legend arose. Best of luck.

ap actually ran an article about the first vampire remains found in italy this last week. a female skeleton with a piece of brick jammed in her mouth.
they spoke of shroud eaters...said the bacteria around a persons mouth would create a hole in a shroud, and make it seem like the dead had eatten it.

i did not see that artical but that was exactly what my man was talking about and as much as i have my nose in books and searches on odd things of the occult type i never heard of this it makes sence that the acid in the body would bubble up and rot any cloth
