i was curious as if to anyone knew where the legend of silver killing vampires came from
ive seen some other people post about silver being able to hurt vampyres, but for the life of me, i have never heard that before, only when it comes to werewolves..
I agree, garlic, sun, wooden stack. (lookingat those iteams)
away with them. gggrrrrrr
see, i love garlic, the sunlight isnt too much of a problem..and what person cant be killed by a stake if used right???....theres just too many myths that have no basis for truth
The origin of using either a silver stake or bullet is generally attributed to the vampire legends of Istanbul. That then spread to the European legends. I cite the book, "The Historian", while it is fictional, it is well-researched.
I find the idea of silver killing vampires to be utterely ridiculous... and while it is purely myth, I can't for the life of me figure out why they thought it would kill vampires except for the healing properties it has.
there used to be a thread about it some time ago. but yeah, its more like myth
Silver is a natural metal used in anchient times in healing potions (and starting to be used again).. as it had incredible healing properties for most ailments (of the time) it's only natural that it was also used against 'evil spirits', garlic is much the same
I agree with LordNoc....whatever the hell his name is (gotta start writing these things down!), it IS movie bullshit. I've been fascinated by vamps my whole life, and I've heard a lot of mythos and superstition on how to kill one, but it wasn't until I saw the movie Blade that I even heard about silver killing a vampire. Before then, it was strictly werewolves.
Silver is thought to purify the blood, therefor it would purify the blood of a vampire, killing them.
I thought that was something they came up with for Blade because wooden bullets would've been ridiculous.
ive never herd that before ..... with were wolves yes but not vamps ... thanks osiris for that bit of info very interesting but why is it harmful to vamps?
I've heard it, but it's unlikely for vampires to be hurt by silver, let alone bullets.
at one point in time silver was considerd to be evils bane, it was thought to repeal evil so mabe that is where the legend came from
i have heard of so many other things but never silver holds head pondering maybe i need to do some research lol
I think in the back of my mind it was something to do with silver nitrate which was used to cleanse the blood I don't think it only killed vampires though!!
I heard that pure silver can kill werewolves, but where does it say it kills vampires?
each different culkture have their one myth concerning vampires both their looks, their feeding pattern, their weakness so it´s quite likely its from the istanbul religion as qouted in the historican....
You know, I was curious and did a little bit of reading (and asking around), and according to my findings, silver was considered the "Holy Metal" of Catholic Europe back around the 14th or 15th century, and one weakness I've read about is that, while all crosses can repel a vampire, touching a vamp with a silver cross will actually burn their skin, just as holy water would. THese two findings may coincide with one another, but that's as far as I've discovered about silver doing ANY kind of damage to a vampire (let alone kill one).
Most metals are toxic in certain quantities (ie. copper, mercury, lead etc.) so why not silver! Although silver in alchemy believed to have some purifying properties for human. Since some humans think that vampires are unclean beings, demons, might think that silver is harmful!
i thought silver killer werewolves? ive never heard of it killing vampires
I think some one got confused between vamp. and w.w. and told some one else- then you get a big chain of telephone game.
Two things come to mind when I think of Silver.
One: It represents the purity of life so with that, the purity of Silver is meant to burn those of the undead, always reminding them of what they have been casted out of.
Two: That the coins paid to Judas was Silver and in which, his death would end up causing a resurrection in which Judas was brought into the night as a vampire. Yet, any time he touches Silver, the silver burns him, which would remind him the fact the blood money paid to him to sell out Jesus was silver.
Yet, anything other then that, I have no clue.

hmmm very interesting.......I personally love silver but never heard of it killing vampires before.....
that comes from the movies and false information i happen to like silver very much and im not dead
the only time i have ever been hurt by silver is when i got a bit to firsky and my ankh embedded itself into my boob...ouch!!!
but other then that i am more into silver then gold
Through my extensive research over the summer i have only heard of silver killing vampyres in one series of books and silver and gold coins were used by the Greeks in times past to help the dead cross the river Styx there sending them on their way further into death's realm.
i think they just mixed up the lyken and vamp sorty it is silver that kills a lyken and sunlight the kills a vamp that i y they use to work together or at least that is my beleafs
Well the only thing I ever saw that might have been Feasable for Silver to kill vampires, was that damn movie Dracula 2000, becaus Judas had betrayed Jesus for several pieces of Silver, he threw it, and hated it, and In hanging himself he became a cursed being, silver being one of the items he could not bare. *shrugs*
Stupid movie. We know that crap isn't true anyway.
