I don't know about anyone else, but I find these bats one of the most fasinating creatures on our planet.

They are the largest bat and greatest wing span. They are now migrating to different regions all over the world.

I am curious though as to how or why this species of bat has fur when others don't and why their facial appearance is so different than other bats. Are they only classified as bats because of their wings, like a panda bear for it's looks? which a Panda is not a bear at all!
Is it truly a bat species or perhaps a marsupial species mistagged.

AWW they are so cute! And great for the enviroment too because of their diet, they are major contributors in pollination..But most bats do have hair or fur so that isnt really what sets them apart..Its their eyesight. It is pretty darn good.Especially as far as bats go.These Megabats use their eyes and smell as opposed to the Microbats, which use echolocation.
Another thing is their Dorsal spine.
Have you ever heard of the hammer head fruit bat? Now THATS a different looking bat !!I swear it looks like a flying Moose.
But you know,I might not remember the numbers correctly, and subspecies are found around the world but in Japan alone there are around 5 or so subspecies of fruit bat alone.
Wonderful animals really. Thanks for posting this thread.
On another note,Fruit bats where at the centre of quite a few of the Vampire legends that originated in the tropics.

Oh,almost forgot..there is alittle Western long eared bat that is noted as hairless.I believe it is called the Myotis?
I also forgot to say that most of the microbats hybernate..The Megas do not.

Plus these bats do hang outside, not in caves and in daytime too. As to why I wonder is it truly a bat or perhaps a winged marsupial?
I don't know any other bats species that has hair.

Doesn't it look more kangaroo in the face?
It's so cute.

Thats right, they sure do hang outside .That is pretty consistant with the Megabats. As far as I know though, they are true mammals and do not have the pouches of a Marsupial. They really do look like a Kangaroo in the face though. And sometimes a certain breed of puppy.

If I recall,Certain Fruit bats are supposedly decended from the Lemurs.
