-Your health is the one thing in your life that you and only you have control over.
Definition of health in Old English:
- health means to make sound, whole, or well
- The word “heal” is within health
-Heal means the absence of disease
Our definition:
Health- the total, physical, mental, and social state of well being
- Healthy body, positive attitude, healthy mind
wellness- an overall state of well-being, or total health
- Health education- the providing of accurate information to help people make healthy choices
- Healthy people 2010- three elements: individuals, families, communities
- the health of the nation depends on the health of the individuals
- 2 main goals:
1.) Increase quality and years of healthy life for all Americans
2.) Remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location
You can attain this by:
Individuals- take an active role in their own health. They can make informed decisions, master skills that enable them to make decisions, access reliable health care info and services, and promote good health in others
Families- can shape the attitudes and beliefs that result in healthful behaviors. They play an important role in meeting the nation’s goals when they teach the values and skills necessary to maintain good health
Communities- offer behavior-changing classes such as CPR, First Aid, baby-sitting, planned development of health promoting businesses and provide health services. They also take steps to ensure a safe environment.
From wellness to death:
most people on the positive side usually exhibit high degree of responsibility, discipline, and positive life direction
Health Trianlge:
-three elements of health are visually represented
- try to keep all sides equal. If you feel that it is not equal, work to correct this.
-social, emotional/mental, physical
Physical- all parts working well together
- withstand normal stress
- strength and energy to spare
- you achieve this with proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep
Mental/Emotional- - like and accept self, relate to others, meet demands, in touch w/ and express emotions in acceptable ways, enjoy learning and knowledge
Social- communicates well, gets along w/ others, shares feelings
