The Spirit of the Winds

A Poem by James Mayfield



I chose to take a stroll one day along a secluded path,

My steps were slow, my gaze directed downward,

I was blinded by the trials I faced in life,

My heart heavied by the pains and sorrows I’d known.



I’d walked a number of friends and family to their gravesites,

All of whom were dear to me and whom I’d held close,

It was difficult to deal with their losses,

It was as if mourning was becoming a way of life.



As I took another step, a gentle wind began to stir,

The breeze blew softly from the Northern skies,

It lifted my head when it caressed my cheek,

And I stopped where I was, savoring it’s touch.



However, this wind was different, somehow special,

There seemed more to it than just traveling air,

Then it occurred to me what that difference was,

This wind had a familiarity to it!



I closed my eyes and took in the wind’s embrace,

It brightened my spirit when I realized what was happening,

I was being visited by the soul of a friend,

Who was telling me something I needed to hear.



She spoke not so much in words per say,

But in the feelings her spirit conveyed,

She let me know she was always with me,

My loss was not as great as it seemed.



As I returned home that fateful day,

I realized what the winds are comprised of,

They are not so trivial, these wandering winds,

They are the souls of those we loved, coming to remind us they still care for us.
