This is entry is to pilot a series of similar posts. As bearer of the dubious honour of concurrent enrollment in two of the country's top universities, I intend to translate various Academiscisms into understandable English.

Each installment in this series shall include an original and imposing wall of academic jargon, faithfully quoted from lectures or personal convertation with a University of Toronto or University of Waterloo instructor. Furthermore, this institutional cliquespeak (originally delivered in seriousness) will be clarified and translated, as much as is possible, into useful English sentences.

Academiscism 001:

(in response to a query about properly applying the provided formula for a quantum-mechanical relationship)





"That formula is what we call an empirical parameterization. And what we mean by that is it's not derived from anything. And obviously, therefor, it's not tremendously accurate."





...and again in English:

"That formula is actually horse shit quackery. Don't use it for anything ever."
