"Immonde"~ An Excerpt

He opened his eyes, this time to find himself in another place. He had felt nothing but he knew this place was unfamiliar just by its smell alone. It had gotten cooler in Bordeaux but this place seemed to smell of the frost of winter. Opening his eyes he could see his breath. In the blue dim he could see every outline. It was so dark, he shouldn’t be able to see, but yet he could. He realized he was alone, for now. He could already hear the wildlife outside . His head swam of thoughts of escape.

He still couldn’t move very well. It was as if his limbs were weighted with sand. He used a wooden chair to drag himself upright so he was at least on his knees. A terrible pain wrenched his gut and he fell to the floor. His entire body stiffened and he felt his insides lurch; he threw up. It tasted like blood and he tried to cry out and no sound left his lips. No tears streamed down his face as he silently cried. He was dying, surely and this woman was prolonging his life to torture him or his family.

“I don’t want your family, Charles. I want your genius.,” she was there suddenly sitting on the chair he has just lost grasp on.

“Just kill me,” he managed to whisper.

“No. I have plans for you,” She kicked at something large on the floor that groaned, “drink his blood. You’ll feel better.”

“Drink what?”

“You heard me, Frenchman, bite into him with those teeth of yours and take in his blood,” she held up an arm of the unconscious man.

Charles seemed to hear the flowing vitreous and the man’s heart beating. How? He took hold of the man’s hand and bit down on the inside of the wrist as she had done to him in the inn. Charles felt the skin tear and the warm liquid pour into his mouth. He closed his eyes and pulled the blood into him. He saw the man interacting with people. He was a traveling salesman who sold bogus elixirs that sometimes even killed people. He had only cared about the coin in his pockets.

So this man is evil and should be dead a dozen times over. “Immonde”....unclean...He would kill only those he deemed evil.

"Perpetual Purpose" ~ An Excerpt

"My master, Nicholas, knew that vampires had varying degrees of strength, but he felt it was only based on age," David said.

"You keep using that term. What does it mean? Did Nicholas' maker know of our origins?"

Charles' watched him swirl his wine slowly in its glass and then look him in the eyes.

"I don't believe so. I never saw it in his blood, maybe too many in betweens, something blocked out along the way. He kept making me drink goblets filled with a mix of human blood, his blood and wine."

"How fascinating"

"He forbiddend himself an alchemist and said he had mastered the 'art of creation'," David gestured to himself.

"Was he very old?"

David shook his head, "I would say older than I am now but not by much. "

Charles sipped his wine and wondered about how many like them they were out there.

"What about your, dark mother, you called her?"

Charles felt a pang,"well she didn't give me much of a choice either. Drink or die. I was twenty, old enough but still, I wasn't ready to die or give up the life I had. As much as I was frustrated with that life at that time I still had a future. She sent me looking for someone she gave me a painting of. It was Ezra. I can't help but think I was some pawn in my dark mother's twisted plans. To find Ezra, her enemy  - though heaven knows why she's at odds with someone like Ezra," he took another sip of his wine, "my dark mother is a twisted soul. She made many and chose brilliance and brawn for her army of blood drinkers. She was bent on destruction. Of what? I have no idea. I escaped her last a century ago and she's vanished it seems but still out there causing strife."

"That is horrible," David said in a mumble, "I can't believe you met the first vampire, though."

"That term again. Vampire?"

"I heard it in my travels to the eastern parts of Europe. It's a name given to the risen dead who feed on the living."

"My, that sounds vulgar."

"Aren't we though?"

Charles frowned but David was right. At times he forgot that he was a damned creature. He surrounded himself now with beauty to distract his mind, "I suppose you are right, but we need to use what gifts we have for good."

David's face became contemplative, "yes, you are absolutely correct. Perhaps this Order can help me find my perpetual purpose."

"Perpetual purpose," Charles echoed, "I like the sound of that."
