At 2 a.m., the house had the wrong kind of quiet..
Not peaceful quiet. Not sleeping quiet. This was the brittle, waiting quiet that made every floorboard feel like it had been left with a secret to keep.
I woke with my heart already moving fast, the way it does before you understand why. For a moment I lay there, listening. The heater whispered. Pipes clicked in the walls. Somewhere deep in the house, a door settled with a soft, almost thoughtful knock.
Then I knew.
Not because I heard anything outside. Not because I saw anything yet. Just because the stillness had changed shape.
I swung my legs out of bed and stood there a second, bare feet cold on the wood floor, trying to decide whether I’d imagined it. The hallway light was off. The dark was familiar, but it felt occupied. Every shadow seemed arranged on purpose.
“Hello?” I called, and hated how small my voice sounded.
No answer.
I moved out into the hall, one hand sliding along the wall. The air was colder than it should have been. That was the next thing I noticed: the slight draft, thin as a breath, touching my ankles and rising. The house knew before I did. Or maybe it was trying to warn me.
The living room was a shape in the dark. The kitchen beyond it showed the faint silver edge of the sink, the outline of a chair. Nothing looked broken. Nothing looked disturbed. But the front of the house felt open somehow, as if its skin had been loosened.
I crossed the room slowly, listening to my own breathing, and that was when I saw it.
The front door.
Not wide open. Not enough to announce itself from the street. Just cracked a half inch, a thin black seam cutting into the pale rectangle of the frame.
I stopped so abruptly my stomach pulled tight.
For a second I couldn’t move. A thousand explanations arrived at once and none of them were any good. Wind. Bad latch. Maybe I’d forgotten. Maybe someone had tried the knob and left. Maybe—
Then the seam widened, just a fraction.
My skin went cold.
There was no hand on the door. No sound of footsteps. No visible shape beyond it. Just the door, breathing open by degrees, as if something on the other side had decided to wait until I was looking.
I stepped back.
The house seemed to contract around me, every room drawing inward, every shadow listening. The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. Somewhere upstairs, a floorboard creaked.
I didn’t remember breathing.
“Who’s there?” I said again, louder this time, though it came out shaky.
Nothing.
The door opened another inch.
Then I saw it: not a person, not a face, only the suggestion of movement outside, darker than the darkness around it. A presence at the threshold. Still. Patient.
My hand found the light switch behind me, but I didn’t flip it. I don’t know why. Maybe because turning on the lights would make it real. Maybe because some part of me understood, with terrible clarity, that whatever was outside the door already knew I was awake.
The air in the room felt charged, tight as a wire.
And then, from just beyond the crack, a whisper slid into the house.
It was too soft to make out the words.
But it was enough to answer the question.
Someone — or something — was there.
