MOTORCYCLE SUMMER

BY:

J.M. SPRIGGS

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have my parents around. You see my folks aren’t exactly what you call normal. I mean they aren’t retarded or anything like that, in fact they are quite the opposite. My parents are archeologists, you know people that travel the world opening tombs and digging up lost cultures. I actually got to go with them, it was fun until I came of age to go to school.

The last thing I remember my mother saying to me as she left me with my Aunt Jayanna was, “Audra, mommy and daddy love you very much.” she touched my cheek and tears slowly slipped down her face. I remember what she looked like when she left. She had long brown hair with loose ringlets, like mine, but she had green eyes where I have brown ones. “You’ll see us every once and a while, and I promise to write or call you.” Daddy only smiled and walked away, Mommy hugged me and walked away quickly never looking back.

That was the last time I actually saw them. I get great birthday and Christmas presents, but it isn’t the same. I think when they write and ask me what I want for my birthday this year I am gonna tell them that I want them. They left me when I was six years old, that was seven years ago.

So here I am thirteen years old laying in my bed in my room in my aunts home. Don’t get me wrong I love my aunt. I would just love to see my parents, if only for a few minutes.

It was early, I couldn’t really sleep, every once and a while I’ll lay there all night thinking about them. I sat up, I had to get up anyway, my step-uncle wanted either me or my cousin Katrina to work in his bike shop this summer.

Last night was eventful, Uncle Jared had asked which one of us wanted to work in the shop. I knew that Kat didn’t like him but I never expected what she said, “Why would I want to work with you. It’s no secret Jared that I didn’t approve of you and momma marrying. Momma was happy so I kept my mouth shut.” She stood up and got into his face, “I just want to get one thing straight right now. You try to adopt me and I’ll run to my real father, and I will never, never call you “Daddy.””

Aunt Jayanna was at work so she didn’t her, thank God. Uncle Jared looked at Kat in shock, she rolled her eyes and went to her room.

I stood up and whispered, “Um, Uncle Jared, I know this doesn’t mean anything, but I would love to work with you.” I lowered my head, “If it is any consolation I think you are the best thing that ever happened to Aunt Jayanna.”

He had looked down at me, “Thanks Audi, your parents don’t know what they are missing.” He smiled, “Wake up call is at seven be ready by eight. Brad’s going to be joining us also.”

Brad is Jared’s son. I was starting down the hall and saw him standing outside of his room. I gave him a weak smile and stepped into my room. I was barely in when he knocked on my door. I knew it him because Kat doesn’t knock and Jared wont come into my room.

“Come in Brad.” He stepped and smiled shyly. He was so handsome, his blonde hair just brushing his broad shoulders. He always looked people in the eyes. I guess that is what I first noticed about him, his dark almost blue/black eyes. He had a muscled body, sixteen and already had a six-pack. You couldn’t help but notice, when was home, unless we had company, he went around shirtless. There wasn’t much of his body that wasn’t muscled or tanned.

“You’re staring Audi.” He said quietly as he sat down on the trunk at the foot of my bed.

I blushed, “I’m sorry.” I sat down on my bed, my back against the wall. I pulled my leg up to my chest. “I am really sorry about Kat too.” I laid my head on my knee, “She really doesn’t remember what is was like when her dad was here.”

“Don’t be, she’ll realize that my dad is a great guy. Then everything will be okay. I mean it’s only been a year since they were married, give her time.” He shrugged, “So you’ll be working with us during the summer. I guess I could tear my eyes away from you long enough to work.” He grinned and winked making me blush harder than I had when he caught me staring.

I threw a pillow at and gasped, “Brad! That’s awful I’m your cousin.” He threw the pillow back at me and said quietly, “Only by marriage.” I threw it back at him and hit square in his face. He looked at me with his jaw set. He quickly jumped off the trunk and tackled me. He began tickling me.

“Brad! No! Please! I’m ticklish!” I laughed and tried to roll out from under him. He pinned me, we were facing each other. Looking at each other our eyes locked, Brad started to lean down to kiss me. I pushed him hard and since he was relaxed it was easy. I rolled out from under him and stood quickly.

“Um, Aunt Jay will be home soon I think I’ll start dinner for her.” I heard him get off the bed, he walked up behind me, he whispered, “I’m sorry.” and walked out.

I wrapped my arms around myself, “I’m not.” I sighed and walked out of my room and started down the hall, I could hear Brad in his room his radio blasting his favorite rap CD. I closed my eyes and sighed again.

Walking up the hall I passed Kats room, stopping just past her door I decide to include on the preparing of dinner. I knocked on her door and waited, I knocked again and stepped in. I saw her quickly hide something and turned around. “What! Don’t you knock?”

I looked at her, “One, I did knock. Two you don’t knock on my door.” I took a deep breath, “I figured since Aunt Jay will be home soon that maybe you could help me make dinner so she wouldn’t have to.” Aunt Jay was a pediatric nurse and she was on her feet all day.

She smiled, “What did you have in mind? I mean neither one of us can cook that many meals.” She crossed her arms and leaned against her desk. She had a point.

I pursed my lips in thought we needed a meal everyone liked and that easy. Slowly a smiled crossed my face, “How about spaghetti? Aunt Jay loves it, it’s easy to make, and we both know how to make it.”

Kat grinned, “Great! Lets get started on it right now. We’ll start the sauce and then boil the noodles when Mom gets home, so by the time she gets out of the shower it will be done!” She grabbed a hair tie of her bed side table and pulled her hair into a ponytail. Her auburn hair looked like a waterfall of red curls, I was always jealous of her looks. Her eyes were a shimmering green, her face a soft roundness to it. She wasn’t tall but average. She wasn’t fat either but her pants were getting tighter and tighter.

I come back to reality daydreaming about last night wasn’t gonna get me dressed for today.

I looked over at my clock 6:59 am, close enough. I flipped the switch off on my alarm and turned me radio on. Getting up and turning my light on I heard a light knock on my door as it opened.

“Audi?” Aunt Jay said, “Good your up. I was afraid I was going to have to wake you up.” She smiled and walked in

I looked at her, for someone who was thirty-five she was young looking and vibrant looking. Her shoulder length brown hair wasn’t as curly as mine or mommas but it had some wave to it. She was a tall and shapely woman, her dark brown eyes shown the wisdom of a person that knew exactly what she was doing.

I opened my closet and smiled, “No, I fixing to pick out my outfit for today.” I flipped threw a few shirts and pants, “Just what am I going to be doing today anyways?”

“I think Jared said something about you working the floor.” She stood and sighed, “So what is it for breakfast or cinnamon rolls?”

“Oh,” I said excited, “please rolls! I haven’t had them in ages.” I smiled sweetly and batted my lashes at her.

She laughed, “Ok rolls it is.” She started out the door, “Hey, you and Brad talk right. I mean your closer than Katrina is to him.”

“Yeah, I guess.” I picked a blue mid-drift from and turned to face her, “Why? Is something wrong?”

“Well,” she said closing the door again, “he’s been very moody since last night. It’s almost as if he is mad at someone in the house. I mean I know what Katrina said last night was awful but he has never been like this.”

I raised my eyebrows and opened my middle dresser drawer and picked a pair of white shorts. “He hasn’t said anything to me. Is he up?”

“Yeah, his radio in on and so is his light, why?” She opened the door again.

“Well, ask him to come over to talk to me, say that I’m nervous or something.” I started changing clothes, “By the time you get down there I will be dressed or at least decent.”

She nodded and walked out, I heard her knock on his door and the “nervous”. I slipped my shorts and opened my sock drawer.

“Audi,” Brad said as he walked in, “are you ok, your door was open.” He shut as he walked in.

I shut the drawer and turned, “Not really, I’m kinda nervous.” I sat down on the chair next the door.

“Yeah,” He sat on the trunk at the foot of my bed across the room from me. “I was nervous my first day.” He smiled, “You’ll be okay, if you get bogged down just call someone.”

“Okay, I guess I was just being silly. Brad, can I ask you something?” I pulled my socks on and wondered in my head how I was going to ask him this when I knew I was the one he was mad at.

“Sure, what?” He leaned on the foot of my bed and waited for my question.

“Why are you being so moody? Aunt Jay wanted me to ask you.” I stood up placing myself in front of the only way out of my room.

What ever question he was expecting it wasn’t that one. His eyes went cold, the smile melted into a mix of sadness and mad frown. “Do you really have to ask?” He stood in one fluid motion coming toward me, we were face-to-face. I took a deep breath his eyes had so many emotions it was hard to read them. “I made a complete ass of myself last night and you of all people expect me to be happy about it!” As if he was ashamed he cut his eyes away from me.

“Brad, you didn’t make an ass out of yourself last night, you, you just caught me of guard.” I touched his arm and I felt his muscles tense. “That was something I didn’t expect.”

“I guess I did go a little fast, didn’t I? I am so sorry I scared you.” He took my hand and looked into my eyes again, the warmth I had come to know and love was there again not the cold ones that always scare me. “Look maybe after work me and you can talk a little and see what Jay and Dad have to say okay.”

I put my hand on his left cheek. He reached and put his over mine. “I would be honored” I leaned forward and lightly kissed his lips. “Come on, Aunt Jay making cinnamon rolls for breakfast and they should be done by now.”

Taking a deep breath he grinned, “Okay,” he slid his hand around my waist and behind me turning the door knob, “remember if you need any help call someone to the floor.”

He opened the door and we walked out. I followed as he went up the hall towards the living room. Behind me I heard Kats door open then close, I glanced over my shoulder and there she was. Kat was standing behind dressed for work.

“Can you two move, I’m going to work!” She pushed past us and entered the kitchen.

We heard Aunt Jay’s voice. “Kat where are you going? I thought you didn’t want to work with Jared.”

We entered and sat down at the table, there were a plate of cinnamon roll. Katrina was still standing and watching Aunt Jay’s every move.

Jared looking at Kat lowered his head. Aunt Jay frowned and took a deep breath, “Jared and I had a talk last night. As of right now your grounded, no phone, no internet, after dinner you clean the kitchen then go to your room.” She stood up and walked over to Kat, “Now, go to your room and stay there until I say different.”

Katrina looked over at me and then at Brad, “Fine let him come in-between us.” She turned and shoved her way between me and Brad. Her door slammed and her radio started booming.

Aunt Jay frowned harder, “Excuse me.” She walked into Kat’s room without knocking and shut the door.

We heard muffled voices but couldn’t hear what was being said. When Aunt Jay came out she had Kat’s radio, her CD player and ALL of Kat’s CD’s.

Jared looked at his watch, “Okay with that in mind we need to go. Grab a roll and lets go.’’ He walked over to Aunt Jay, kissed her on the cheek, “I’m sorry honey.” He kissed her again this time gently on her lips.

She smiled softly and hugged him, “Don’t be, I’m not. I think it is just time she learned I am not going to let go the one man in my life that treats me like a human and not a piece of shit.” She glanced over at us and smiled again. “Have fun at work.”

Brad and I smiled and grabbed the rest of the rolls, “For everyone at work.” Brad said as Jared raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah right they will never see the inside of the garage.” I said as I grabbed my purse.

Brad looked and me and cocked his eyebrow, “Kiss my ass Audi.” He grinned and walked passed me.

As he did I kicked him softly kicked his ass, “How ‘bout I just kick instead.” I passed him and ran to Jared’s jeep.

Uncle Jared came out of the house his face as dark as the woods behind our house. As he got in he sighed deeply, “Well I suppose we are gonna have hell to pay when we get home.” Silently he started the jeep and left the yard.

It was a long quite ride to the shop. Jared had a motorcycle shop and garage. That is how Aunt Jay and Jared met. I had always wanted to have a motorcycle and she took me there to make sure what I wanted so she could get it for my birthday the following year.

I had decided that a motorcycle wasn’t for me but that was after Aunt Jay and Jared had started dating. Needless to say that Katrina was happy when Jared proposed to Aunt Jay, in fact Katrina blames me for everything. I told her that if was my fault that Aunt Jayanna was happy then I would gladly take the blame.

As we pulled in the parking lot we could that the back lights were on. “It’s looks like Marcus and Ruby are already here.” Brad smile to him self and started unbuckling his seat belt.

“Isn’t Ruby’s brother supposed to be arriving sometime today?” As we came to a stop close to the backdoor. Brad helped me out the jeep.

“I think so, but not until this afternoon.” Jared fishing for the door key. “He’s coming on the bus all the way from New York. I guess he’s in for a real culture shock.” He smiled evilly and found the right key unlocking the back door.

“Yeah,” Brad said opening the door for me, “I can imagine the first time he tries to play one of these girls down here. He’ll end up getting played himself.”

I punched his arm , “Oh yeah!” I looked at him, “Well I think I’ll show him around. Ya know show him were all the kids hang out.” I walked in and saw Ruby sitting on the desk with a desk drawer next to her.

Ruby was like a older sister to everyone, even Jared. She had short salt-pepper hair, her eyes were a deep brown. She was just few inches shy of being average height, a little on the plump side but very pretty. She was wearing black overalls with a dark blue sleeveless shirt. She had a black baseball cap with the shop logo on it and black combat boots. “Hey!” she said hopping off the desk. “I didn’t know the kids were coming to the shop today. Marcus is in the shop catching up on stuff from yesterday.”

“Good, we need to get some of that stuff done by eleven.” Jared said unlocking the swinging door that went from the back rooms to the showroom. “Is you brother still coming today?” He asked unlocking the register.

“Yeah, this afternoon, the bus is supposed to drop him off across the road at two o’clock.” She smiled and looked at me, “I guess I get to work in the garage today?” She handed me the cash drawer.

“Actually if everything goes okay you’ll be working the back all summer long.” He looked at the clock, “Well we got thirty minutes before we open so why don’t we get those cinnamon rolls and make some coffee and relax some.” Jared and Ruby went threw to door and as I started Brad grabbed my arm.

“What the hell was that?” He growled at me he fingers biting into my arm.

“Well when you start getting possessive I will get as far as I can from you.” I jerked my arm away and went to the back.

Uncle Jared was helping Ruby and Marcus load a bike onto the lift. Marcus had black hair and green eyes. He had a dark tan, so dark that the tattoo he had barely showed up. I absolutely loved it, it was a yin-yang dolphin with a sun that had red tips in the middle of it. He was short about 5’5” and stocky, not fat all. I noticed he always watched Katrina but she never gave him the time of day.

“Hey Marcus,’’ I smiled and help lock the tires into place. I really don’t see why she was like that if it wasn’t for the fact that is way to old for me I would so try to date him.

“Hey Audi, thanks. I heard Kat showed her ass again.” He frowned, “Ya know, I think she does it on purpose. Instead of just telling Jer that she doesn’t want to work here she says those nasty thing so she can get grounded so she can’t work here.” He glanced over at me and blushed. I was the only one that caught on how much he cared for her.

“I think your right.” I walked over to the sink to wash my hands. “Hey Uncle Jared, maybe that’s what you and Aunt Jay need to do instead of grounded she should work here for free.” I winked at Marcus and he smiled, it was too bad he bad taste in women.

“I’ll say something to Jay tonight and see what she thinks.” He glanced at his watch, “Okay Audi let’s go up front.” He walked back through the and I followed. “If anyone has any questions that you don’t know holler for anyone in the back.” He opened the register and quickly counted it.

“Two hundred even. That’s what you start with and when we close we count out that same two hundred what is left is what we made for the day. Around twelve- thirty I’ll come up so you can go to lunch, okay.” He walked around the counter and flipped the open sign and unlocked the front-door. “Good luck. Oh if any of the people that are supposed to pick up their bikes come in I want you to call me, you deal with them okay?”

“I saluted, “Aye, aye captain!” I grinned.

He smiled and patted my head, “No need to be a smart ass. That reminds me, if any customers give you any shit I want you to push this button.” He walked behind the counter and pointed to a red button. “Right here.”

“Okay, I got everything. Go work.” I started pushing him to the back. I pulled my shorts down around my hips showing a little more skin. I took my hair down letting it fall loose. I no longer looked thirteen, I had added at least three more years.

I sat behind the counter and waited, I didn’t have to wait for long. A man and woman drove up on matching bikes. The man looked a little older than Marcus, around twenty-twenty-five. The lady was about thirty, they both blonde straight hair, dark tan, and bright blue eyes.

“Good morning!” I said smiling, “Welcome, if there is anything I can do for you please let me know.” They nodded and I picked up a motorcycle magazine that I was going to read when I first got there

They nodded and started to look around. The lady came up to me and smiled, “How much are the helmets with microphones?” She held the helmet in her hand, it was black with gold trim, the microphone was gold colored.

Looking down at a price sheet my finger scanned the list, “They are Forty-five fifty before tax.” I sat the list back down behind where we kept the little accessories like key chains and stuff.

She smiled, “Isn’t your aunt Jayanna that works at the hospital?” She sat the helmet on the counter.

“Yes, she’s off today.” I lean forward on the counter looking at her and then glancing over at the man that she came in with.

She looked around to him, “That’s my brother, he’s visiting me for the week. His birthday is next week so since he’s not going to be here I thought I would get his gift now.” She waved for him to come over, he smiled and quickly walked over. He was rather cute his blonde hair just barely touching his shoulders. He was wearing a pair of black jeans and a white shirt, he had been wearing a denim jacket but when they drove up he had taken it off.

His blue eyes seemed to haven gotten brighter as he got closer. He tucked his thumbs into his front pockets and smiled, “Hey,” he said smiling at me.

“Hi,” I smiled, “since I wont see you next week ‘Happy Birthday’.” I looked at the older lady, “So, who do I tell my aunt asked about her?” I smiled at her.

“Oh! I’m Trill and this is my brother Grant. Tell your aunt that I will see her at work.” She placed the helmet on the counter. “We’ll take the helmet also.”

I rang her up and they left, I wished Grant again a happy birthday before they walked out the door. I started flipping through some of the magazines on the counter reading articles that were interesting to me. Luckily for me it was a slow day.

Two guys came that needed to talk to Uncle Jared about picking up there bikes. One was about twenty the other was a lot older, Uncle Jared wasn’t happy to see them and they weren’t happy when he told them that they weren’t ready.

It was around noon when Brad and his infinite wisdom decided to sneak up on me.

“BOO!” He yelled as he grabbed me around waist. Unfortunately he ducked when I swung.

“Asshole!” I growled as I turned back to the front of the store. He always snuck up on me.

“HA! Nice swing if you had connected I would be on the floor.” He grinned and stepped up next to me behind the counter. “Dad sent me to relieve you for lunch.”

I glanced at the clock, I hadn’t realized that time had went by so fast. I walked from around the counter, “Okay, it’s twelve” I looked at my watch, “I’ll be back up front in about an half-hour.”

“No actually you’ll be back in an hour.” He said counting the money I had made and put into an envelope. “Dad wants you to do something for him.”

I looked at him and frowned. As I went through the double doors I saw Jared. “Hey, Brad said you wanted me to do something for you during my break.” I hopped on the corner of the desk and looked at him.

Actually it’s something for Ruby. Wes, her brother, called and said that they were coming in early. So, what I want you to do is after eat go over and wait for him. We gave him a description of you so he’ll know what you look like.” He looked at me up and down, “You know I wouldn’t blame Wes one bit if he wanted to date you while he’s here for the summer.”

“Would it be okay if I just ate over there at the deli and then on our way back I could get something for everyone else?” Uncle Jared smiled and pulled out his wallet.

“That would be great! I haven’t had a Ruben sandwich in ages.” He handed me a fifty dollar bill and I stuck in my front pocket.

“Well before I go I am gonna go freshen up. Then by that time you could go around and get everyone’s orders I will even get Wes something, if he wants anything that is.” I walked to the employee’s bathroom and brushed my hair pulled it up into a ponytail.

I came into the office and leaned on the desk waiting for Jared to return, when he did he handed me a large piece of paper and smiled. “Um, Uncle Jared when is he supposed to be pulling in because it’s twelve-fifteen now.”

Jared looked at the clock then back at me, “Yeah, you have at least thirty minutes before he shows up.” He walked behind the desk and sat down look at some papers that looked order forms and monthly bills. Without looking up he said, “Be careful Audi.”

I walked out front and Brad smiled, “Don’t forget no mayo on my sandwich, and could I get an extra bag of chips?”

I didn’t even look back as I walked out, “If I have enough, see ya in a little while.” I looked across the parking lot of the strip mall we were in. I t was like a horseshoe three sided with an opening at one end was Uncles Jared’s shop at the other end was a bus station and next to it was a wonderful deli that made the best Ruben’s ever. I glanced at my watch and ran over to the deli.

Looking in the window I noticed that Sam was working. His family owned the shop and Brad and I went to school with him, I guess like Uncle Jared since school was out he was working for the family business.

I walked in and it was like stepping back in time, the whole place looked like a 50’s malt shop. Sam was cleaning up from a customer when I came in so I didn’t say anything I just sat down and waited for him to come to me.

I didn’t have to wait long. Same came up to me and smiled, “Hey Audi. Just you today?” He glanced around as if looking for either my aunt or Brad to be with me.

I just smiled, “Yeah for now. I am waiting for someone to get off the bus. I working at the shop this summer and so is Brad.” I was always intimidated about Sam’s eyes they were a light brown almost a dusty color, but when he looked at you, you knew it. It wasn’t just his eyes, his whole being just seem to draw people in, I guess that’s why he has so many friends. I mean he wasn’t ugly, in fact he rather cute, dark hair, a nice tan and a medium build that he said was baby fat. I doubt there was any fat at all on his body, but I wasn’t going to volunteer to check it out.

He sat down at my booth and smiled, “So what is it today?” He leaned forward against the table top and looked at me up and down.

I placed my hands on my hips, “Like what you see?” He blushed and lean back. “Well I do need a grilled Rueben and a large sweet tea. Also I need these in about fifteen minutes to-go.” I handed him the paper with everyone’s order on it. “Ring it all up on one ticket.”

“Okay nothing really need any cooking except the rueben sandwich. I’ll be right back with yours and make enough for the other one.” He disappeared behind the counter into the kitchen and came back out in less than ten minutes.

I leaned forward and was smiling thinking about Brad, “Hey Sam, can I ask you something?”

He grinned, “You just did.” He said sitting my plate down. He sat down leaned back and crossed his arms.

I frowned and took a deep breath taking a bite out of my sandwich, washing it down glaring at him the entire time.

He put his hands up in defense, “Hey, hey! I was just joking! What is your question?”

Before I said anything someone came in and wanted something to eat. “Hand on, let me get his order and then we can talk some more.”

I smiled softly and looked out the window keeping an eye out for the bus. Sam came back a few minutes later, he sat down and looked at me. “So what do you want to talk about?”

I took a big swallow of my tea and took a deep breath, “Have you ever felt for a person that you don’t know if you should?” I took another bite of my sandwich never taking my eyes off of him.

“You mean Brad?” He smiled wide and leaned back when he saw my shocked face. “Don’t look so surprised Audi, you can tell just by the way you look at him.”

“You mean everyone knows!” I screamed and stood up quickly, “OH GOD!” I wrapped my arms around my waist and started walking in circles.

“Look Audi don’t freak.” Sam said from the table, “Brad is a cool guy, besides he isn’t your real cousin. I mean Jared your blood uncle, right?”

I turned to look at him, “No Sam, he isn’t my blood uncle. Aunt Jay’s first husband, Kat’s dad, beat her.” I turned back away from and wiped my eyes quickly.

I saw the bus starting to pull in and sighed, “Can you get the rest of that order ready. I will be right back.”

I didn’t have long to wait, only one person got off. He was about eighteen and had shoulder length red hair, his eyes were strikingly bright green. He was about five-eight and medium build, I mean he was ripped but he also had a little roll on him. He looked around and saw me, smiling he walked over to me, “Are you Audi?”

I smiled, “Yes, and you must be Wes. Ruby has talked about you a lot.” I looked over my shoulder at the deli, “Um, are you hungry? I still have about fifteen minutes left on my break and I have to pick up lunch for everyone at the shop including Ruby.”

Wes seemed to brighten at the thought of food. “Yeah lets get some food. I haven’t eaten in about,” he looked at his watch, “four hours. I’d think it’s time for food.”

He grabbed his suitcase and duffle bag, “Um, can you get that?” he glanced down at a guitar case. He smiled as I nodded and picked it up. “So,” he said facing me, “let’s go spend the rest of your break getting to each other.”

I smiled and directed him to the deli, “Sure, you get to meet one of my school friends, his name is Sam.” We stepped in the shop and Sam smiled

“Just put your stuff right there in that little cubby hole.” Sam said as he refilled my tea.

“Hey Sam! Ruby’s brother is here and he is hungry!” We sat down at my booth and Sam sat down next to me.

“Hey! Ruby has done nothing but talk about you, welcome! Sam smiled and extended his hand.

Wes looked at him and grinned, shaking his hand, “Hey thanks.” He looked over at me, “Um, Sam, Audi doesn’t have much time on her break so can you make me a ham and cheese with tomato on wheat heavy on the mayo.”

Sam grinned, “Yeah,” he looked over at me, “you want me to add his to the bill?”

“Yeah.” I looked over at Wes who was frowning at me, “I don’t want any complaints either.”

Sam looked at him, “If you want my advice, never argue with her or anyone in her family. It wont get you anywhere.” He looked at me and winked. “I am gonna go fix your order. It wont take me long so don’t start talking about me.”

I smiled shyly and looked down in embarrassment, “I am so sorry Wes. Sam is a long time friend of the family. Brad, Sam, and I have going to school since first grade.

“Don’t be, and thanks.” He smiled softly and leaned forward, “It’s just to bad I am only here for a week though.” He winked and leaned back when Sam came back out.

Sam put two large bags on the table, “Audi, your Uncle Jared called, he needs for you to hurry up and get back over to the shop.” I took a deep breath and looked up at Sam.

He smiled, “I put the change in a small bag in the drinks bag.” He looked at Wes, “Nice to meet ya man. I hope I see you more of you.”

Wes nodded, “I hope so man. Maybe I can stay longer if I talk to my mom and sister.” He turned and grabbed his stuff, “Ready Audi?”

“Yeah lets go.” I started walking, “Oh thanks Sam, see ya later!” I yelled to him.

We quickly crossed the parking lot. I busted in the front door. Ruby was at the front. Ruby, what’s wrong?” She was sitting down behind the counter not looking so well, “Audi your uncle wants you in his office.” She looked pasted me to Wes. “Go put your things in my jeep then come back up here.”

I walked through the double doors into the back. Uncle Jared’s door, which is normally open, was closed. I tapped on the door and Brad opened the door. “Audi come on in.” He turned before I could look at his eyes.
