Outline of observations

Painting name – Building a Palace

Initial observations –

Many men are working together to build the palace in the background using horses, saws, hammers and just general manual labor. Everyone seems to be actively working except for the figure standing alone in the center of the painting who is possibly the supervisor of the construction of the palace.

Description:

Painting was created by Piero Di Cosimo using oil paints on a panel wall during the Italian Renaissance.

Documents provided by Ringling suggest that the subject of the painting was to show the “art of building” or that the painting was part of a series of other works depicting Italian history.

The first thing I noticed was the supervisor just standing there while everyone around him had their hands full with actual work.

The painting reminds me of a time I would not like to be in, at all. Everything done by hand, supplies being brought on site by horse or other animal and then everything lugged around with little to not mechanical support. However, the architecture is far more impressive because of this.

Organization

The painting’s main focus appears to be the palace in the background under construction. This is the first thing that grabs people’s attention because of the sheer size of the building and how it is a dull grey in color compared to the brighter foreground. From there, the focus either shifts to the supervisor in the center and then scope to the left and right as the person examines the smaller portions of the painting where the most work is actually being done. Or, the focus is brought onto the horse on the far right and/or the animal on the far left, then scopes inward as the person examines the smaller areas of the painting.

The painting goes against how people normally view paintings, as far as color is concerned because as much as you’d like to look at the brighter sections of the painting first, the dominance of the grey palace draws your attention to Interpretation it first, like it or not.

The painting’s purpose seems to show the work and dedication involved in construction back in the 1500s. Although it gives the feel of being a very busy scene, none of the workers seems distressed and there is no sign of enforcers or anyone forcing them to continue working. They all seem to be working together productively and enjoying it. Of course this probably was not the case in real life but the painting does a good job of portraying the Italian’s skill and productivity in the field of construction.

Words to describe the painting’s mood –

Productive

Busy

Energetic

Demanding/Rewarding labor

Judgment

Opinion – The painting was interesting. Not really an art person though so my thoughts are somewhat bias but it was tolerable to look at and fairly interesting to analyze. Spent a good hour looking it over and after comparing my thoughts with the documents provided by Ringling I would say that it does do a very good job of depicting the intended message.

I do think it is fairly easy to convey a message of construction procedures so there’s really no way to do a better or worse job of conveying the message. But I do like the detail that was put into it. The small statues on the second floor of the palace and the workers fixing the pillar on the lower left side are two examples of the subtle details.

Essay on military advertisements

17:23 Nov 12 2009
Times Read: 687

This is an enrty level college essay analyzing two US military advertisements. If someone could take 15 minuets to read it and tell me what you think it would be appreciated.

Marine Corps & Army advertisement analysis

The United States military is known as one of the most powerful and sophisticated military forces in the world. In order to keep and maintain this status, the military relies on a steady influx of dedicated, motivated soldiers willing to risk life and limb for their country; but what draws these men and women to such a demanding and potentially deadly profession? The answer to that question depends on the branch of military. Whether it be the Marine Corps, the Air force or even the Coast Guard, each military branch uses a different method to appeal to a variety of citizens all around the country.

The newest Marine Corps advertisement entitled “No Compromises” uses a mix of intense action and honor to entice recruits. Right from the stars, the viewer is hit with a hard guitar rift and a Marine drill sergeant commanding a formation of soldiers. This instantly grabs the viewer’s attention as they advertisement branches out into the wealth of activities and tasks that await a US Marine both in training and in actual combat situations. From commanding a Bradley Tank, to a transport helicopter, to open combat, the commercial very quickly and very affectively outlines the responsibilities and risks involved in joining this branch of military while making it seem intense and almost heroic.

It is evident that the advertisement’s main goal is to make the USMC out to be an elite group of the best and only the best. The USMC’s catch phrase “The few, the proud, the Marines” serves to fortify this image; appealing to the average citizen’s desire to be “number one”. The commercial also shows that being the best is in no way an easy task. Although there are only a few clips of actual USMC training, it is enough to give the viewer an idea of the intense discipline, physical exercise and teamwork that goes into the training of a Marine Corps soldier.

In order to further strength the elitist image, the Ad deliberately does not mention any form of financial assistance what so ever. Although assistance with things such as college and housing is to be assumed, the commercial appeals more toward the sense of honor and duty that goes into defending the United States rather than the perks of joining the service. In a way, this can be looked at as the pride in defending the country and its values is the reward for joining the military. While financial aid is not a bad thing by any means, the tone and vibe of the advertisement tries to weed out those that want to join for the perks involved from those that want to join for the sake of duty, providing the USMC with the most dependable and motivated soldiers. The drawback to this is it turns away those who do not feel they are up to the standard of the USMC.

An interesting change from the USMC advertisement is that of the US Army’s newest commercial targeting “video gamers”. Right from the start, it is clear that this commercial is poorly directed. It shows two men, presumably in their late teens playing a war based video game. At first glance this could easily be mistaken for a video game design commercial, especially because this same tactic has been done before by several video game design colleges in past years. The commercial continues with one of the in game soldiers knocking on the TV screen and asking the two men if they are ready for “a real challenge?”. From there, the advertisement describes the advantages of joining the United States Army and attempts to seal the deal by offering a free copy of the America’s Army video game, along with a DVD describing the Army’s advantages in greater detail; all by simply calling an on-screen number.

The commercial is clearly set to target the average youth of today. The commercial depicts the Army as having an intense but at the same time relaxed atmosphere; showing both male and female army soldiers smiling and having fun while playing a soft rock soundtrack in the background. Although the Ad does not go into detail, it shows a variety of jobs available in the Army, from combat and troop deployment to recon and intelligence gathering; this effectively opens the door for a wide range of recruits and ensures that the commercial will catch the interest of just about anyone.

The commercial continues to entice viewers with the mention of college aid and an enlistment bonus; this is an especially affective tactic in today’s economy. Many people who cannot afford college but wish to attend could see this as a golden opportunity to get into college as well as learn skills that may help them later in life. The Army advertisement tries to appeal to the needs of the average citizens and shows how military service is heavily rewarded, making it out to be the smart way to go.

The commercial’s only major flaw is the video game aspect. For the less intelligent video game players out there this commercial could fortify the notion that war is like a video game. This not only distorts the view of military combat and killing but puts unnecessary “heat” onto video games as far as parents and liberals are concerned. While the implication of video games into a military commercial was an interesting idea, more thought was needed in its execution. Were this done properly it could have greatly increased the effectiveness of the commercial on the gaming population without slightly blurring the line between war and games.

Both of these commercials are, although similar in terms of musical choice and the fact that they are both trying to persuade viewers to enlist, the way they go about this task differs greatly. The USMC focuses more on moral values such as pride in country, duty and honor and portrays the Marine Corps as a challenging, demanding task that is rewarding in its own right. The Army on the other hand focuses on the monetary needs of viewers and gives the image of a type of tradeoff: military service for financial security. Monetary reward is not necessarily a bad reason to join the military but this may not always provide the military with the most motivated or capable recruit. In addition, more respect is generally given to those in the Marine Corps than the Army due to this reason.

All in all, both advertisements do their job affectively. They both attract a different audience and because of that there are ultimately more recruits into the overall military. Both commercials show the different morals, values and points of interest within the branches of military and ensure that if one branch does not satisfy the needs of an individual looking to enlist, the other will. Whether it’s piloting a tank or a fighter plane, to tactical assaults and recon gathering, these commercials make it clear that the military has something for almost everyone. Like all advertisements they have their down points; such as the Army’s poor conduction of implementing video games into their advertisement and the Marine’s possibly being too demanding but they still affectively relay the intended information to their intended audience.

Portion of my game

18:27 Nov 10 2009
Times Read: 692

These are maps i drew up for my game, the one i made the demo for. They're made from the paint program and the story is kinda typical but i like the maps. hahaha I made them so naturally I'm gonna be proud of them no matter how badly they suck.

Basically the maps show how a nation in the game comes to power. If i'm bored i'll copy the story from my game and paste it after the maps but basically,

Green territory is Empire territory

-Green lines are empire troop movement

Red territory is Rossarian territory

-Red lines are Rossarian troop movement.

(until Rossaria is formed as a nation the red lines are empire troops.)

Blue territory is Serga territory

-Blue lines are sergan troop movement.

this is a sectional map of the Empire's inner territory. I would have shown this from a global view but the rest of the world hasn't been created yet. hahaha

Basically Rossario defected from the Empire to form his own nation.

The Dead Walk chapter 1

16:43 Nov 05 2009
Times Read: 700

This is one of my favorite scripts I've written back when i was trying to get them published. Brings back such good memories. I may work on it for fun some time later but for the moment this is as far as it's gonna get. Still relativly fun to read.

Introduction:

This is the story that plays before the title screen.

It starts with the camera looking at two middle aged men playing chess in a public park. Tall city buildings can be seen in the distance. The man on the right has light tan skin, brown hair and brown eyes. He wears a dark red shirt with a tan overcoat over it, blue jeans and black shoes. The man on the left has a darker tan, brown hair with a small beard and green eyes. He wears a grey long sleeved shirt, tan pants and brown shoes. They are in mid conversation when the camera enters the scene and speak in a Middle Eastern accent. (Man1 – man on right/Man2 – man on left)

-Man2: Are you sure about this?

-Man1: Yes. Everything is perfect. It has to happen now.

-Man2: I understand.

He pauses with his hand on the queen chess piece.

-Man2: I will bring it as soon as your men secure the building. When will you begin?

-Man1: Tomorrow, 9AM.

-Man2: I’ll be there.

The camera scrolls up towards the sky as they play, a large, sprawling city comes into view beyond the park. Tall buildings and billboards can be seen through out the area and the sound of car horns can be heard among the buildings. The camera flashes to looking at a black van with tinted windows driving along a 2-lain road between a set of row homes. The camera follows the van for several moments and then zooms inside. In the back of the van there are four men. All of them are dressed in an urban camouflage uniform, wear black ski masks, black combat boots and black Kevlar vests. When the camera enters the men are loading ammunition clips into AK74 assault rifles and checking the sights of Colt 45 pistols. After several seconds the camera switches to the outside of the van and watches it drive to the end of the street where it follows behind another black van. The camera enters this one to see another group of men in the same uniform loading shells into pump action shotguns. It then zooms back out and follows both vans as they drive through a small portion of the city and then follows behind two other black vans. The camera then pans ahead of the vans to see a large facility directly ahead of the vans. A large sign above the gated entrance reads “CREW Power & Water”. The camera then switches to looking inside a small security booth. A man with white skin, black hair and green eyes wearing a standard security uniform is sitting in a metal folding chair watching a baseball game on a small TV that sits on the security counter in front of him. As he watches the game the four vans from earlier are seen crashing through a large metal-link gate directly in front of the security booth. As the vans speed by, the security officer jumps up from his chair and runs out of the security booth.

-Officer: What the fu--

As he runs out of the booth the vans skid to a stop in the middle of a large paved courtyard. Moments later the doors in the back of the van burst open and the armed men charge out, shooting everyone in the area including the security officer. The camera follows the squad of approximately 20 armed men as they kick in the fire escape door on the left wall of the courtyard and storm into the building. The squad breaks into two groups, a group of 10 going through the door on the 1st floor and another group of 10 running up the stairs to the door on the 2nd floor. The camera follows the 2nd group as they break the door down and gun down 3 employees who were standing in the hallway. They quickly search through the rows of cub-icicles until they reach another door at the end of the rom. The soldier in the lead kicks it open and they storm into the next hallway, killing another group of employees. As they storm down the hallway the camera switches to the 1st group of 10 as they gun down the security officers and employees in the building lobby and secure the surrounding rooms. The camera follows this group as they make their way through the 1st floor of the building until they reach the large three floor room containing the generators for powering the city. They spilt into groups of 2 and secure the 1st floor. As each group finishes their search they yell “clear!” This continues until the entire room is secure. The camera looks upward to the 2nd floor to see Man1 from the park wearing the same uniform as the rest of the soldiers except for the mask. He is standing at the edge of the railing holding a single colt 45 pistol in his right hand. The camera turns so it is looking from over his shoulder at the soldiers below. It then zooms in on another group of soldiers entering the building carrying a large black bomb. They set it down in the center of the room and then begin prepping it. The Man nods in approval and spins around, aiming the gun behind him when he hears footsteps behind him. The camera turns to see him aiming the gun at Man2 from the park who is still wearing his casual cloths but is holding a grey suitcase in his right hand. Man1 lowers his gun and steps closer to Man2.

-Man1: Are you ready?

-Man2: Yes.

-Man1: Then come.

He motions with his hand as he walks towards a metal door on the far left wall of the room. A sign above the door reads “Water purification”. As they approach the door the camera switches to looking at an aerial view of the facility. A news helicopter can be seen circling the facility and a reporters’ voice can be heard off screen.

-Reporter: Terrorists have taken over the power plant! This is truly unbelievable. What are they trying to achieve?

The camera pans down to the street to see S.W.A.T. trucks pull up to the outer perimeter of the facility as the police set up roadblocks behind them. As the S.W.A.T. soldiers get out of the trucks the camera switches back to Man1 & 2 as they walk across a small metal bridge over a large pool of water. When they reach the platform in the center of the pool Man2 places the suitcase on a metal table and opens it. Inside are 6 small tubes filled with a lime green liquid that are surrounded by black foam. Man1 takes the tube on the far left out and holds it in front of him.

-Man2: Will this work?

-Man1: It will.

He flicks open the top of the tube as he walks to the edge of the platform.

-Man1: It has to work.

He pours the liquid into the water below and then takes out another tube. The camera then switches to the outer perimeter of the facility to see the S.W.A.T. soldiers looking over a detailed map of the facility, planning for an assault of their own.

-Reporter: The mayor advises all civilians to stay off the streets. Stay inside and lock your doors and windows. Anyone found outside is subject to arrest.

The camera again switches back to Man 1 & 2 as they dump the last of the liquid into the water supply.

-Man2: How long?

-Man1: 24 hours. Maybe 42 but no more.

Man1 takes 6 other tubes from his vest pocket containing anthrax and places them into the suitcase.

-Man1: Take this with you and join the hostages. There is no point in both of us dying today.

He closes the suitcase and hands it to Man2.

-Man1: Get your family out of the city. Make sure they do not drink the water.

Man2 nods as Man1 walks toward the exit of the room.

-Man2: Emil?

Man1 (Emil) pauses and turns back to look at Man2.

-Emil: Hm?

-Man2: Thank you.

Emil nods again and leaves the room. He walks back to the railing overlooking the 1st floor. He raises his gun into the air and fires a single shot to get the attention of his men.

-Emil: It’s done.

The soldiers look at each other uneasily.

-Emil: Have faith in Allah and we will not die in vain. Our deaths will be but a small sacrifice for what has been set into motion.

The camera turns to see a large window that takes up most of the eastern wall of the room. Outside of the window, across the street is a building that is under construction. The camera zooms in on the roof of that building to see a S.W.A.T. sniper lying prone on the rooftop, aiming his rifle through the window. The camera switches to the view of the scope to see the cross hairs on Emil’s head.

-S.W.A.T. sniper: This is S-1. Got a clear shot on the target.

-S.W.A.T. commander (Over radio): Understood. We’re in position. Take the shot.

There is a short pause as the sniper readies his shot and then a loud bang is heard as a bullet pierces Emil’s head, causing him to fall to the floor. The camera switches back to the room with the terrorist soldiers as smoke grenades are thrown through the sky light on the roof. The soldiers begin shooting up at the light as S.W.A.T. soldiers fire down on them, killing all that are in sight. The terrorists take cover behind pillars strewn through out the room as the S.W.A.T. soldiers’ fast rope to the 2nd floor. A fire fight breaks out between both sides but the terrorists are killed with no S.W.A.T. casualties. The S.W.A.T. soldiers secure both the 1st and 2nd floors and discover the bomb that was brought in earlier strapped to the main generator.

- S.W.A.T. soldier: This is Unit A-7. I’ve located a bomb in the main power station.

- S.W.A.T. Commander (Over radio): There’s an EOD squad en route to your position. Do not touch the bomb until they arrive.

- S.W.A.T. soldier: Understood.

- S.W.A.T. soldier (Over radio): Command, we’ve found what appears to be Anthrax stashed away in the offices. We’ve also found several hostages in the same room.

- S.W.A.T. commander (Over radio): There is an ambulance outside, bring them there for treatment.

The camera switches to looking at the news helicopter as it circles the facility.

-Reporter: And just as quickly as it started the terrorist scare in Ash Field, PA is over. We are as of yet unclear of the casualties but we assume the number to be high. Stay tuned for further reports on the situation as the details are brought to light. This is Robert Finley for ASN News. The camera scrolls up to look at the mid day sky as it fades to black.

Day 0: Calm before the storm:

The story starts with the camera looking at a black screen.

The camera slowly pans upward until it is looking into an underground sewer tunnel. Water rushes through the central passage as rats and other small animals can be see darting along the upper passageways. As the camera slowly moves along the tunnel the opening credits roll; displayed in the corners of the screen. The camera moves to the mid way point of the tunnel and then looks up to see light shining through the holes in the cover of a manhole. The camera moves up and through the manhole and looks into a marble courtyard in the Business District of a city. A large circular three tiered fountain stands in the center of the courtyard and long oak benches are placed on all sides. The camera pans upward, looking at the skyscrapers tower over the courtyard and when it is level with the roofs of the skyscrapers it looks out into the sprawling city of Ash Field PA. As the camera looks at the city the voice of a radio DJ is heard off screen.

-DJ: It’s 12:30pm Monday, March second. The grand opening of the River Rapids water park will remain on Schedule despite yesterday’s events and will be opening its gates in time for the 4 o’clock rush so bring the whole family for food, fun and water rides. Everything in the park including admissions is cut in half for today only. To celebrate the opening .886 WKL is giving away two free tickets every half from now until 4:00pm. Listen for the WKL horn (the sound effect of a horn is heard on screen) and be the first one to call 717-438-2112. Again that’s 717-438-2112.

As the DJ talks the camera continues to pan through the city, looking at the tall buildings, billboards and factories that are strewn throughout. When the DJ is finished his speech the camera is looking at a burning six story building in the heart of the city. A fire truck and ambulance can be seen parked outside and barricades have been set up on either end of the street. Police officers, fireman and doctors are on the street, tending to the wounded that have been brought out of the building. The camera focuses on the far left window on the third floor for a moment and then enters the building through that window to see a fireman (Alex Walker) in a black/yellow insulated suite and mask running along a burning hallway toward the camera. He jumps over a piece of burning rubble and attempts to open a burnt white painted door at the end of the hall. When it does not open he grabs his fire axe from its hip mounted holster and chops into the door twice, leaving a splintered gap in the center. Then he rams into it with his left shoulder, knocking it off its hinges and sending it smacking against the wall of an apartment entrance.

-Fireman (Over radio): Walker are you still in there?

-Alex: There are still people in here. I know where they are don’t worry.

He runs into the room but stops in what is left of a living room as burning rubble falls from the roof, blocking his path.

-Alex: It’s getting to them that’s the hard part.

He turns around and runs back out into the hallway.

-Fireman (Over radio): The building’s falling apart walker. You’re running out of time!

-Alex: Not helping.

Alex jumps back over the rubble in the hallway and the game begins. (This is where the player will learn the movement and basic attack controls for the game. The player must reach the girl trapped in the building for the story to continue. Through out the game there will be portions of speech and action that happen with out interrupting the game play. These sections of story are called In Game Stories and will have the acronym IGS next to their title.

A cry for help/IGS:

This story happens when Alex is mid way down the hallway.

-Female (Through wall): Help me! Please (violent coughing) Help!

-Alex: Where are you!?

-Female (Through wall): Room 319. (Violent coughing)

-Alex: Damn that’s on the 4th floor….. Keep your head to the ground! I’ll be there, I promise!

The camera will look ahead of Alex at the door to the stairwell at the end of the hallway and then go back to the behind view.

Dodge action/IGS:

This happens when Alex attempts to open the door to the 4th floor in the stairwell. When he pulls open the door slightly a large amount of smoke pours from under the door. The action button will flash on screen and the player has 1 second to press it.

*If the button is pressed Alex will move to the right to dodge the back draft from the hallway. (Back draft is when the pressure build up from fire being trapped in an enclosed area is released through one spot. The fire bursts from this spot violently)

*If the button is not pressed in time the back draft will cause Alex to move backward, breaking through the wooden guard rail and falling off the stairwell. He grabs onto the floor with both hands and struggles to pull himself up. (Actions like these will occur through out the game. When ever the player fails to press the selected button in time an event will take place where he will either be killed or wounded. Because this is the tutorial no damage will be taken.)

-Alex: Shit, can’t get through here.

Search and rescue:

The story starts with Alex slashing into another white door with his fire axe. When he cuts a large enough hole into it he kicks it in to see a young woman lying on the floor of a tile bathroom. The woman has white skin, dirty blond hair and green eyes. She wears a black shirt with a mini-red jacket over it and tan jeans. Alex runs over to her and lifts her up to her knees.

-Alex: Can you walk?

She coughs as Alex tries to bring her to her feet but then she stumbles forward as she tries to walk.

-Fireman (Over radio): Walker the building’s coming down! Get the hell out of there!

-Alex: I’m on my way out chief. Have the ambulance ready, got a survivor with me.

Alex swings her arm over his shoulder and helps her walk out of the bathroom.

-Alex: Hang in there. We’ll be out before you know it.

This is where the game continues. (Alex and the woman must reach the apartment roof top for the story to continue.)

Going up/IGS:

This happens when Alex and the woman reach the stairwell. The 1st 2nd and 3rd floors are blocked by flames

-Alex: We’ll get to the roof. The hospital can have a chopper her in minuets.

-Woman: (Violent coughing)

Pitfall/IGS:

This happens when Alex and the woman reach the 6th floor stairwell path. As they walk the floor below them creaks and breaks under Alex’s feet. He pushes the woman forward as the floor breaks and she falls to the floor in front of him as he falls back down to the 5th floor on his back.

The woman looks over the broken path down at Alex.

-Alex: I’m ok, I’m ok. Get to the roof. I’ll catch up.

-Female: O-ok.

A fine line/IGS:

While on the 5th floor a portion of the hallway collapses to the floor below which is engulfed in flames. There is a thin portion of hallway on the left side of the hall which Alex can use to shimmy across. As he passes one of the doors, the pressure of him leaning against it makes it open slightly and smoke pours out into the hall. The player must press the action button within one second

*If the button is pressed in time Alex will turn and fall, grabbing onto the broken hall as the back draft sprays out above him. Then the player must hang-shimmy past the door and use the action button to pull him up on the other end of the hall.

*If the button is not pressed in time the back draft engulfs Alex before he can drop down and he is sent screaming into the fire below. (This results in game over and the player will be sent back to the last save or checkpoint.)

6th floor access/IGS:

This happens when Alex is in room 433. The floor of the room above will collapse at an angle, creating a ramp to the floor above.

Escape from the apartments and the end of the tutorial:

The story starts with Alex pushing open the metal door at the top of the stairwell to the roof. A hospital helicopter is seen on the other end of the roof and the woman Alex rescued is being lifted into the chopper by two field doctors. Once she is inside the two doctors climb into the chopper as Alex approaches. The last doctor into the chopper extends his hand out to Alex. Alex grabs hold and is pulled into the chopper before it takes off.

-Doctor: Are you alright?

-Alex: I’m fine. Focus on her.

Alex sits down on the padded seat in the back of the chopper as the doctors take a look at the woman. After a moment he takes off his mask and leans his head against the back of the seat. Alex has white skin, spotted with black spots of ash, black hair and blue eyes. As the helicopter flies into the air the camera zooms out, looking at it from behind as it flies toward the hospital. The fire truck on the road can be seen spraying the building with water from a near by hydrant. As the helicopter flies the camera fades to black. The words “Later that night” appear on screen and fade away after a few seconds. Alex and a doctor can be heard off screen in conversation.

-Doctor: Everything looks fine but we’re holding you over night for observation.

-Alex: Fine. Guess I can use the break. How’s the girl?

-Doctor: You mean Mrs. Grey?

-Alex: Yeah.

-Doctor: She’ll be ok. All of her injuries are minor. Nothing serious.

-Alex: Good.

The sound of Alex leaning back on a hospital bed is heard in the background.

-Alex: So I’m here for one night right Doc?

-Doctor: Yes. It seems unnecessary but we want to be on the safe side.

-Alex: Gotcha.

-Doctor: I will be back in the morning to check your condition and if all is well you can leave.

-Alex: Alright, see you tomorrow then Doc.

After a short pause the camera switches to looking at Man 2 from the park scene walking with a squad of four terrorist soldiers wielding AK74s through a warehouse building. Man2 is wearing the same urban camouflage uniform as the terrorists except for the mask. As they walk other soldiers are seen in the background bringing wooden boxes into the warehouse from the loading dock outside. Man2 approaches a soldier who is sitting at a desk in front of a laptop on a folding metal chair.

-Man2: What is our status?

-Soldier: The facility is fully functional and we have enough supplies to last several months if needed.

Man2 nods as the soldier continues to talk.

-Soldier: we’re loading the last of the armaments now.

-Man2: When we’re finished order your men to seal off this floor. Everyone is to report below ground before dawn is that clear?

-Soldier: Yes sir.

Man 2 looks back at his squad and motions to a steel door to the left of the soldier on the computer.

-Man2: Come, we have work to do.

Man 2 and his squad walks through the door and the camera fades to black.

Day 1: Zero hour:

The story starts with the camera looking at a close-up of Alex’s face as he sleeps in the hospital bed. His eyes open groggily and when he has adjusted to the bright sun light shining through the window he sits up in the bed. He is now wearing a lime green colored hospital gown. The camera zooms out to get a better view of the room. Alex’s bed is against the northern wall of the room, close to the western wall where a long window is placed, taking up nearly the entire wall. The bright sunlight from outside is shining into the room. A counter with cabinets above and below takes up the section of the wall south of Alex’s bed with various medical paperwork strewn about. There is a single white metal door out of the room which is to the right of the counter with a single square window placed in its center that looks into the hallway. The only other door in the room is directly north of the exit door which leads to a small bathroom. After letting out a small yawn Alex climbs out of bed and looks at the analog clock above the door. The clock reads “11:17”.

-Alex: 11 Already? Damn, slept my whole morning away.

He presses the nurse-call button next to the bed and lowers his head to the speaker.

-Alex: Hey Mrs. Can you send Doctor Ruben to room 120? I need to see him before I can go home.

He lets go of the button and waits for a response. After about a 10 second pause he presses the button again.

-Alex: Hey! Anyone hear me? I need to see Doctor Ruben ASAP. He said he’d be here.

He steps away again and continues to wait but after another pause he turns to walk out of the room.

-Alex: Typical.

He opens the door and steps out into the hallway but stops when he sees that the hallway is scattered with bodies of doctors, nurses and patients. They are all lying face down on the floor with small pools of blood around them.

-Alex: …….

He approaches the body of a doctor that is lying directly across from the door. The doctor is lying on his stomach in a half curled ball with a clipboard clutched in his hand. The doctor has sickly pale white skin, black hair and green eyes. He wears a white doctors’ coat over a light blue uniform with black shoes. Alex kneels down beside the doctor and turns him onto his back. Dried blood is trailing from his eyes, mouth and nose.

-Alex: Oh, shit.

He brings his hand up to the doctor’s neck to feel his pulse but pulls away when he feels nothing. Without saying a word Alex stands up and walks back into his hospital room. He grabs a small brown backpack that is leaning on the side of the bed and walks into the bathroom, shutting the door behind him. The camera switches to looking inside the bathroom to see Alex is now wearing a dark grey shirt, blue jeans and brown boots. He is is standing in front of the sink on the northern wall dialing a number on a teal cell phone. The toilet is to his left with a metal safety bar welded to the western wall next to it. The tan bag is at his feet and the hospital gown has been placed on a hook attached to the door behind him. When Alex dials the number he brings the phone to his right ear.

-Alex (Nervous and irritated): C’mon, pick up!

The phone rings for several moments and then the voice of a woman is heard over the phone.

-Alex: Hello?

-Female (Over phone): Hello. I am unable to get to the phone right now. Please leave….

Alex presses the button to hang up as an angry/frightened look comes over his face.

-Alex: Damn it! Where is everyone!?

He puts the phone into his pocket and stares blankly into the mirror as he thinks.

-Alex: That girl!

He pulls the tan bag onto his shoulder as he walks out of the bathroom.

-Alex: I need to find her…..

When he walks back into his room the game continues. (Alex must reach the security room and deactivate hospital security for the story to continue.)

Direction/IGS:

This happens when Alex leaves his room.

-Alex: I need to find Dr. Ruben’s office. Mrs. Grey was his patient so her information should be there.

Map of the hospital/IGS:

This happens when Alex finds any of the hospital maps in the building. He will either pull the map off of the bulletin board or pick it up off a table and look at it for a moment before putting it into his backpack. The map can then be

Accessed in the inventory any time.

Taking the stairs/IGS:

This happens when Alex attempts to call the elevator on the 4th floor. A flashing red symbol above the door indicates the elevator is locked and will not move.

-Alex: Damn. Elevators’ locked.

Action/IGS:

This happens when Alex is on the stairwell. The security shutters are down, restricting access to each floor. The body of a doctor is keeping the shutter leading to the 5th floor from closing. The metal shutter is cutting into the skin, causing blood to leak onto the floor. The player must approach the shutter and use the action button to make Alex lift up the shutter. When it is high enough for him to fit through he ducks under it while still holding it. When he gets through he lowers the shutter it falls back down onto the drops, cutting deeper into the skin.

Full access:

The story starts with Alex standing over a monitor wall in the hospital’s security room on the 5th floor. He looks at the various images of the hospital as he attempts to open the security shutters. He presses several buttons on the terminal under the monitors and then the camera switches to looking at the security shutters on the stair well as they slide upwards into the sealing. It then switches back to the security room as Alex watches the monitors.

-Alex: Well that was easy. Now for Ruben’s office.

This is where the game continues. (Alex must reach the hospital lobby for the story to continue.)

Map Marking:

The tutorial for using the map will appear after the scene above. The player will learn how to mark specific rooms and buildings on their maps and set/remove waypoint markers. The door leading to the Offices section of the hospital is already marked as an example.

Borrowed Time:

The story starts with Alex walking into the hospital lobby through the hallway at the northern end of the lobby. The lobby is broken into three sections, a carpeted waiting area on the lower right section of the room, a reception desk and small office in the upper left section of the room and a children’s’ waiting area containing a small pen and a box of toys in the lower left section of the room. Just like the rest of the hospital, corpses litter the room. Doctors, patients and nurses lie face down on the floor with dried blood everywhere. Alex cautiously steps over the bodies as he makes his way to the clear glass doors of the hospital main entrance. The hospital courtyard is littered with bodies and crashed ambulances. One ambulance has crashed through the outer wall of the courtyard and lies on its side in the street. Alex presses his hand against the glass as he peers out into the courtyard. Small tuffs of smoke can be seen blowing upward in the distance.

-Alex: My god…..

He grabs onto the handle of the door and pauses for a moment. Then he shakes his head and walks away from the entrance, toward the hallway leading to the office.

-Alex: As soon as I find her we’re getting the hell out of here.

As he pushes open the white double doors into the hallway the camera looks away from him, looking back into the lobby to get one last look at the corpses scattered around. Then the camera switches back to Alex in the hallway and the game continues. (Alex must find Mrs. Grey’s file and exit Dr. Ruben’s office for the story to continue/)

Documents:

Through out the game the player can find documents and articles which can help get the player through areas in the game or reveal secret areas. The first two available memos are in Dr. Ruben’s office. Note that while nearly all intact computes in the game are accessible the one in Dr. Ruben’s office is on a permanent blue screen and can not be used.

Note to computer Tech.:

This memo is found attached to the computer monitor in Ruben’s office.

Jimmy,

I need this problem fixed ASAP. Every time I try to get to the patient archives the computer locks up. I’ve had to write the past few patient files in the old notebooks. They’re not going to do the hospital any good until they’re uploaded to the archives. Thanks in advance

-Ruben

File for Mrs. Grey:

This memo is found in the file cabinet on the far side of Ruben’s office.

She is being kept in room 212 for overnight observation and should be able to return home in a day or two.

Doctor’s signature: Ronald B. Ruben.

Noises/IGS:

This happens after Alex has read Mrs. Grey’s file. The sound of a door slamming shut is heard from out in the hallway followed by a person coughing.

Flight:

The story starts with Alex pushing open the wooden door of Dr. Ruben’s office and stepping out into the hall and turns toward the lobby but stops when he sees a doctor standing further down the hallway. He is facing away from Alex and is standing stiffly in the center of the hallway with his arms dangling down in front of him. Alex sighs in relief and walks over to the doctor.

-Alex: God damn, didn’t expect to see anyone still alive. (Pauses as he approaches the doctor) Any idea what’s goin’ on?

He stops a few feet behind the doctor and waits a few seconds for an answer but the doctor pays no attention to Alex. Instead he still stands still, breathing heavy and making faint gargling sounds.

-Alex: Hey doc are-

He reaches his left hand to the doctor’s shoulder and the doctor’s head turns stiffly to look at Alex. The doctor’s face is like that of the other corpses through out the hospital. This sight causes Alex to step back in shock and the doctor lunges at him, grabbing onto his shoulders tightly and rearing his head back, his mouth wide open and drawling. Alex presses one hand to the doctor’s chest and the other cupped under his chin in an attempt to push him away.

-Alex: What the hell!?

(The player must rapidly tap the action button for Alex to push the doctor away.)

*If the button is not pressed enough times the doctor will bite into Alex’s neck, ripping off the flesh and gnaw at it as he brings Alex to the ground. This results in a game over.

*If the button is pressed enough times Alex will push the doctor back, sending him stumbling backward and falling to the floor.

-Alex: ….what the hell!?

Breathing quickly, Alex rubs his neck as he looks at the doctor squirming on the floor. He takes a step back as the doctor squirms.

He steps back to distance himself from the doctor and hears a low moan coming from behind him. His eyes widen as he turns to see a small group of nurses approaching him from the opposite side of the hallway.

-Alex: shit……

Alex looks down the hallway leading back to the lobby and runs past the doctor who is struggling to get to his feet.

-Alex: Gotta find her…..

As he nears the end of the hallway the game continues. (Alex must reach room 212 for the story to continue. The player has the ability to use hand-to-hand attacks on the zombies at this point but it will not be very affective. This is a point where the player must evade.)

Disconnected/IGS:

On the way to room 212 Alex will pas by a row of pay phones along the hallway leading to rooms 150 – 200. The phone on the far right is off the hook and the dial tone can be heard.

Fight:

The story starts as Alex approaches the door to room 212. The light from inside the room is shining through the spaces in the cloth over the window. Alex hurriedly opens the door to the room and steps inside.

-Alex: Mrs. Grey?

The camera follows him into the room and switches to 1st person view as he looks around from left to right. The room looks normal at first but as he looks to the right of the bed in the center of the room he sees a small trail of blood leading into the bathroom. The bathroom door is open slightly but the light is not on inside.

-Alex: Mrs.?

Still in 1st person, Alex walks over to the blood trail and looks at the bathroom door, now that he is close he hears a low growling sound from inside. He approaches the door slowly and presses his right hand against the handle, not opening it just yet. After a deep breath he pushes open the door and looks into the bathroom. Mrs. Grey is lying on her back in the middle of the room with a pool of blood forming around her. A patient is kneeling at her side, leaning over her and gnawing at a gaping wound in her neck. As the light from the room pours into the bathroom the patient turns to look at Alex, ripping off a large chunk of flesh as he turns. Alex steps back in horror and the patient rises to his feet, walking toward Alex slowly. The view switches back to 3rd person as Alex backs away, unsure of what to do. He continues to back up until he knocks over a metal crutch that was leaning against a counter near the door out of the room. Alex looks down at the crutch and back at the patient who is steadily getting closer. Finally Alex picks up the crutch and points the blunt end toward the patient and the game begins. (Alex must defeat the patient for the game to continue. This is also the basic combat tutorial.)

Self defense:

The story starts with Alex knocking the patient onto the ground with the crutch and then bringing the blunt end down again and again on its head, cracking the skull and bashing it in. After the 10th hit he brings the crutch back up, ready to bring it down again but he looks up and sees Mrs. Grey still lying on the bathroom floor. He throws down the crutch and runs to her side. He looks her over and sees several large wounds on her right side and neck, the blood still seeping onto the floor.

-Alex: Oh god……what did they do to you?

As he looks her body over he notices a small slip of paper clenched in her left hand. Alex carefully pulls the paper from her grip and takes a look at it. An address has been scribbled on a torn paper towel. The address reads “2200 West shore Ave.”

-Alex: 2200 West shore Avenue. That’s not far from here.

He looks at the paper again and then back at Mrs. Grey.

-Alex: Family, maybe…..

He gets to his feet slowly and looks back down at Grey’s corps. Gunfire from the hallway causes him to jolt and turn to face the door.

-???: Fuckin’ die!

Four gunshots are heard followed by rapid footsteps. Alex picks up the metal crutch and opens the door of room 212. Several dead doctors’ lie in the hallway, bullets shot into their chest and head. As he enters the hallway he sees the door to the Psychiatric ward swinging shut.

-Alex: Hey! Hey, wait!

He begins to run down the hallway and the game continues. (Alex must reach the hospital employee area hallway for the story to continue.)

Officer of the law:

The story starts with Alex walking slowly down a hallway inside the hospital. Several dead patience lie sprawled on the floor throughout the hallway. Another gunshot is heard from around the corner at the end of the hall. When Alex approaches the corner, he peaks his head out slightly to see a female police officer standing over a doctor who is lying on his stomach, reaching his arm up toward her as he lets out a low moan. She lowers her gun and fires another shot into the doctor’s head making his body go limp. The officer then aims in front of her and continues walking down the hallway. Alex steps out from the corner but hits a fire extinguisher that had fallen onto the floor with the heel of his foot. The officer spins around and opens fire; shooting two shots of her pistol at Alex. He narrowly ducks back behind the corner and the officer advances with pistol ready. The officer has dark tan skin, black hair that is pulled back and hazel eyes. She wears a black short sleeved shirt with the AFPD logo stitched on the left sleeve, light tan pants and black boots. She also has a black belt tied around her waist which holds her pistol holster, police baton, a flashlight, handcuffs and a 2 way radio. She has a New York/Hispanic accent.

-Alex: Don’t shoot! I’m not one of them!

The officer stops and takes a few steps back, still aiming the gun at the corner.

-Officer: Come out from behind there, hands behind your head.

She motions with her pistol as she says this. Alex pauses for a moment and then puts his hands behind his head.

-Alex: Okay, I’m coming out. Don’t shoot.

He slowly walks around the corner and stops in the hallway as the officer looks him over. Finally she lowers the gun and Alex lowers his hands.

-Officer: *Sighs* Sorry about that, can’t be too careful. You ok?

-Alex: Yeah, all things considered. What’s a cop doing in a hospital anyway?

-Officer: Trying to get the hell out.

The officer turns back down the hallway and then looks back at Alex.

-Officer: Can’t get to my damn squad car with that horde in the lobby. Been trying to find another way out.

She pauses for a moment and then raises her hand to Alex.

-Officer: I’m Elena by the way,

Alex shakes her hand.

-Alex: Name’s Alex. Any luck finding a way out?

-Elena: Yeah, there’s an employee parking garage on the east end of the building. Plenty of ways out there.

-Alex: Where would you go when you’re out? The whole city could be this way for all we know.

-Elena: It is. A fuckin’ apocalypse out there. A few of the officers are hold up in the station though; I talked to them on radio when everyone passed out. It’ll be as close to safe as it gets.

-Alex: Good plan.

-Elena: C’mon, I’ll take you there. Better then staying here that’s for damn sure.

Alex nods and follows Elena down the hallway.

-Elena: Don’t fall behind.

This is where the game continues. (Alex and Elena must reach the ambulance in the parking garage for the story to continue.)

Hurry up/IGS:

This happens if Alex takes too long in any given area.

-Elena: Alex let’s go! Don’t think I won’t leave your ass behind!

Knock Knock/IGS:

This happens when Alex and Elena reach a nurses station. The doors leading to the next hallway are locked and can only be unlocked from inside the station. The wooden door to the station is locked however and several nurses can be seen gnawing at a body through the window.

-Alex: It’s locked.

-Elena: Get out of the way!

Elena approaches and fires two short into side of the door and then kicks it open. The door swings open and smacks against the wall inside the station.

Home free/IGS:

This happens when Alex and Elena reach the hallway leading to the stairs to the parking garage.

=Elena: Keep up, we’re almost there!

Supporting fire:

The story starts with Alex climbing into the front seat of an ambulance while Elena holds off the approaching zombies. Alex searches the glove box and under the seat for a key.

-Elena: Alex!

Elena continues to fie at the zombies, pausing once to reload.

-Alex: I don’t see the key!

-Elena: Fuck the key! Get out of the way!

Alex climbs out of the ambulance and Elena shoves her pistol in his hand.

-Elena: Cover me.

-Alex: What?

Elena climbs into the ambulance and reaches under the steering wheel. Alex aims the gun in a circle around him as zombies approach from all sides.

-Alex: You gotta be kidding me?

This is where the game continues. (Alex must survive for 1 minuet while Elena hotwires the ambulance.)

Fleeing from Marries:

The story starts with Alex shooting a patient in the chest as he approaches him. The camera pans outward to see a horde of zombies surrounding the ambulance. As Alex opens fire the engine starts and the ambulance’s headlights turn on, shining a bright light into the parking garage.

-Elena: Get in!

Alex gets to the back of the ambulance and swings open the rear door, jumping inside as Elena drives through the garage, running over countless zombies in her path. Alex shuts the door and walks to the window connecting the drivers’ side with the back of the ambulance.

-Elena: Sorry it took so long, first time on an ambulance. If it were a convertible we’d be out of here in 3 seconds tops.

-Alex: Here’s your pistol.

-Elena: Keep it. There’s plenty more at the station.

Alex pulls the crumbled address from his pocket and hands it to Elena. She glances at it as she drives.

-Elena: What the hell’s this?

-Alex: It’s an address.

-Elena: We don’t have time for detours! We need to get-

-Alex: I helped you, you help me.

Elena looks at the address for a moment and then takes it from Alex’s hand.

-Elena: Fine. One stop, that’s it.

The camera zooms out, away from the ambulance and watches it as it drives down the street and rounds the corner. The sun can be seen setting, casting a dim orange glow over the city. The player will have the option of saving the game before continuing.

Using the Cell phone:

This tutorial will be displayed before the story continues. Now that Alex is out of the hospital, the GPS function will become available on his cell phone. Access the cell phone in Alex’s inventory and select “GPS Locator”. This will display a 2D map of the city. This can be used to set routes to locations as well as marking points of interest, making traversing the city a little easier. The cell phone can also be used to call other survivors later in the game. From there you can request aid, or order them to go to specific locations. You will also be able to receive voice mails from characters from time to time.

Leveling Alex:

Through out the game Alex has the ability to learn new abilities and skills. This process is called leveling. In order to learn new abilities and skills Alex must earn and accumulate experience. Experience is earned by killing enemies, rescuing survivors and completing tasks through out the game. Tasks include completing sections of the story, assisting NPC characters and completing side quests.

Arrival:

The story starts with the camera watching the ambulance drive along a two lane road of townhomes. Zombified civilians can be seen wondering the street as the ambulance comes to a stop in front of a white painted townhome. Several of the zombies turn their attention on the ambulance as Alex and Elena get out.

-Elena: This is the place, no lights on inside though.

Alex draws his pistol and approaches the green wooden door to the house.

-Alex: Stay here, keep the engine running. I’ll be out soon.

-Elena: I’m not waiting here long Alex. In and out, got it?

Alex nods and opens the front door and steps into the house. This is where the game continues. (Alex must enter the master bedroom for the story to continue.)

Stranded:

The story starts with Alex walking into the master bedroom on the 2nd floor. The master bedroom takes up the entire width of the house and ½ of the length. A queen sized bed sits to the left of the door with small wooden tables on either side. A long dark wood dresser takes up the northern end of the room directly in front of the bed and another smaller dresser sits just in front of the door against the wall. There is also a small closet on the far side of the room with a closed, white folding door. As Alex steps into the room the folding door opens slightly, just enough to make a small gap. Alex raises his gun and takes a step back.

-Alex: Is someone there?

He pauses as he wais for an answer and cautiously walks toward the closet door with gun in hand.

-Alex: It’s alright; I’m not going to hurt you. Just, come on out so I can take you to safety.

He gets within a foot of the door and stops, aiming at the gap with his pistol as he waits for a response. A few moments later…..

-Elena (Outside): Wait!

A gunshot is heard from outside and Alex looks in the direction of the shot. As he does the closet bursts open and a female zombie lunges for him. Alex jumps back and fires a shot out of panic. The bullet hits the zombie in the side of the head, causing it to spin around and fall onto its back just outside the closet door. Breathing hard, Alex aims his gun at the zombie but then rushes to the window when he hears the sound of a vehicle peeling away. When he looks out the window he sees the ambulance turn a corner at the end of the street and Elena limping into the house. Alex runs out of the room and down the stairs as Elena shuts the front door. She is holding her right hip. Blood can be seen moving between her fingers.

-Elena: Fucker had a gun.

She kneels down on an armchair to the right of the door and looks at her wound.

-Alex: What happened?

-Elena: Guy came out of the house, thought he was with you. Then he pulled a damn gun on me and jacked the ambulance!

Alex looks at the front door and then at Elena.

-Elena: I’ll be fine.

She forces herself to her feet and makes her way to the stairs. Alex stays beside her thinking she may collapse.

-Alex: There was another one of those things in a closet upstairs. I … took care of it.

-Elena: Huh, good for you. Bathroom’s upstairs right?

Alex watches her stagger upstairs as the camera fades to black. When it comes into focus it is looking inside the bathroom as Elena wraps a home-made bandage around her waist. A glass of blood red water is sitting on the counter with tweezers beside it, along with a bottle of painkillers. A small bullet is seen floating inside the glass. Alex is standing in the door way watching over her.

-Elena: This’ll do for now. Next time you’re waiting outside.

-Alex: I’m sorry ok! How was I supposed to know this would happen?

-Elena: It doesn’t really matter now does it? We’re stuck here for now.

-Alex: Can’t we go to the station?

Elena looks out of the bathroom window and shakes her head. The sun is now setting behind the city buildings.

-Elena: It’s nearly nightfall. We should play it safe and stay the night here. No telling what’ll happen out there. I’ll try to contact the station over radio. Find some way to barricade this place ok? Board up the windows or something. Shouldn’t be too hard.

-Alex: Alright. I’ll be back when I’m done.

Elena nods and Alex walks downstairs. This is where the game continues. (Alex must barricade the windows and the front door of the house for the story to continue.)

Safe houses and sleeping:

There is a pile of wood, as well as a 1.4 finished play house in the basement. Barricading the house will create a “safe house” for the player to stay in. Safe houses provide a temporary shelter where the undead can not enter easily. Here the player can store weapons and equipment or sleep. When the player has the supplies to make a safe house an indication bar will appear on screen in the form of a percent meter. This will show how much of the facility is barricaded. The building must be at least 80% barricaded to be considered a safe house. Once barricaded, he safe house location will appear on the city map allowing for easier organizing and allocation of supplies and survivors. Safe houses will also activate survivor bonuses. Every survivor has a special ability or trait that will positively affect others in the same safe house. For example Elena’s ability “motivate” will give Alex a temporary 10% boost in attack power upon leaving the safe house. Sleeping serves as a way to pass time in game. At this point in the game the game clock will pass realistically. Meaning that 60 seconds make 1 minuet and 60 minuets make an hour in game time. Sleeping serves as a way to “pass time” or fast forward the game clock to a later point. Alternatively the player could just shut off the game and wait until a later period but this puts Alex at risk of being attacked if not in a safe house. Sleeping in a safe house will restore health and cure poison should the player be affected. The player does have the option to sleep anywhere but this will not do anything but pass time.

Leaving one/IGS:

This happens if the player attempts to barricade the back door of the house.

-Alex: We need to have a ay out. I’ll leave this one.

Sleep over:

The story starts with Alex standing in the living room of the house, looking at the now boarded up front door.

-Alex: Hmmmm….

He presses against the wood with his hands.

-Alex: It’ll do.

The camera follows him upstairs as he walks back to the bathroom. Elena is sitting on the counter with her radio to her ear.

-Alex: Anything?

-Elena: No. Something’s blocking the signal, can’t get through to anyone. No one’s picking up the phone either.

-Alex: Damn it.

-Elena: How are the barricades?

-Alex: I left the back door unblocked incase we need to escape, everything else is sealed.

-Elena: Good thinking. Now, we get some sleep. We’ll figure out what to do in the morning.

She pushes herself off the counter and walks past him.

-Elena: I call queen size.

She walks into the master bedroom as she says this and closes the door. Alex stands in the bathroom doorway for a moment and then shrugs. This is where the game continues. (Alex must wait until 7:00am for the story to continue. He can either sleep in a bed or wait around for 7:00am.)
