Changing a drug habit, doesn't change whether you'd stop to help a person that's bleeding. Just as lining up sycophants praising your good nature and calling them friends doesn't improve your inclination to betray anyone when you see no benefit to them. Even knowing full well the pain one has felt in the past has not deterred people from inflicting that exact pain on others, utterly disregarding "the reasons" to change that choice.
