Our Last Night Out

“Let’s go out and have dinner with my friends tomorrow night?” I say looking at you.

“Sure, whatever you want but I am not dressing up,” you say looking down at your phone, “and this weekend I am spending time watching the games so no trips out.”

“Ok and you can wear whatever you want, they don’t care, I don’t care.” I respond. I imagine my new outfit with a tight small skirt and a low cut top.

“My body, however, is a gift that needs to be wrapped.” I teasingly say while smiling at you and putting up my hair for bed as the sun starts to rise.

“And definitely unwrapped.” You say grinning looking at me as I come to bed.

The following night the moon is just up over the edge of the hills welcoming a new warm night. A car pulls up to the alley in the back of our building. The driver is very professional and opens the back door as we come to the street and slide in one after the other into the back seat. The driver says a quick welcoming good evening sir to you and closes the door after we get inside. This driver knows the care and respect needed to drive certain nighttime clients such as us. He quickly gets the car on its way saying nothing else the entire trip.

During the drive to my friend’s you rest your hand on my bare leg. I wonder if the driver can see it in the rear view mirror. We say nothing to each other as the car drives along the busy streets. Every so often we look at each other's faces in the flicker of the passing streetlights. We can see the darkness of the night within each other's eyes even as the lights reflect over them. We have been with each other for a very long time and do not need words to show how much we care for each other. A smile or two during the trip is enough. I put my hand on yours and hold it tightly as I look out my window. The city street is filled with motion. People and cars are moving at different speeds in all directions as our car glides past.

My friend’s house is up in the hills. We drive through several winding neighborhood streets on the way up. The car finally pulls up to a secure gate at a very high vined wall. After the driver uses the call box to announce our arrival the gate slowly opens. My friend’s house can be seen up the incline of the short driveway. Our car drives up to the entrance with barely any sound as the gate closes behind us. We stop holding hands when the car stops. The driver gets out and opens the car door for us. We exit and walk to the front entrance where we are warmly welcomed by my friend. She has an amazing home with her husband. It barely hangs onto the hillside high up above the city. It is not a large home, but it does have a small fountain that can be heard in the front of the house. The large wall we passed through surrounds the whole property and protects this beautiful, peaceful enclave.

“I am so glad you both decided to come!”, my friend says reaching out and holding my hand pulling me warmly close to her as we walk into the house. “The chef has been working on the meal since before we got up at sunset. It should be really good, he is so talented!” my friend says. You follow us into the house smiling at how close I am to her. She and I have known each other for many decades. I look back smiling warmly at you as we join the small gathering in the living room.

“I know it will be amazing,” I say smiling at my best friend. “I can’t wait.”

After joining everyone in the living room a few introductions are made to other guests, some of who we actually haven’t met before. There are eight of us in total. There are appetizers and drinks already laid out at the bar for us. I don't take any food but I do take a drink. I watch as you have whatever you wish. I smile at you ruining your appetite and stand close to you while we talk to everyone. At one point you reach out to hold my hand again.

When dinner starts we sit beside each other at the dining table. Conversation echoes around the room along with the sound of glasses and silverware. We look at each other every so often during the meal. Your eyes sparkle with candlelight in the dimly lit room. I think to myself how beautiful your eyes look with the fire in them. You charm everyone so easily with your conversation skills. Your charm is one of the reasons I fell in love with you. I am more a creature of motion than words. We finish the meal all too quickly. It is surprisingly good, especially the rare beef cuts dripping with just the right amount of aus jus. The smell of the meat is amazing. Dessert is just as good.

A husband of one of the guests starts the inevitable discussion about the latest blood games at the night arena and I watch as you light up with the discussion. I love listening to the sound of your voice when you excitedly talk about something. You both sip after dinner drinks during the conversation and talk about how the recent trades are affecting survival. I like how excited you get in the discussion.

My friend signals me over and wants to show me something. She and I head to the bedroom to check out her latest shopping haul. The smell of the candles, the dim lights and soft music echo throughout the house. There is energetic post dinner discussion and laughter. This is what life is about. We are enjoying ourselves even if you didn’t really want to come. I can tell you are having fun.

The back walls of the house are mostly glass with the panels slid open to the night air and spectacular views of the city beneath. There is a somewhat large hillside terrace in the back of the house with asymmetric sections of grass and stonework around a pool. A glass railing is at the edge of the terrace so as not to obstruct the views. The pool water smells warm and there is the soft sound of water filtering in and out of the pool system. Beyond the terrace the views of the city are from the mountains to the ocean. A million people are moving in cars causing the lights to dance in the valley below.

After spending some time with my friend, I walk off on my own to the terrace with some sangria in a glass. I rest my arms on the railing looking out at the moon high in the night sky. All the blinking lights of the city below and the smell of the cool night air are so comforting. I love the feel of my clothes moving over my skin in the warm night air blowing on my body.

I look back into the house to see you standing there so incredibly handsome. I smile noticing how happy you are in your heated discussion. I watch you talk for a bit enjoying the energy radiating from you as you talk about something you love. I just love watching you. I know exactly why I am your partner in the eternal night that is our lives.

You notice me watching you during your discussion and smile back at me. I smile back knowing that I finally have your attention as I take a drink. I turn back to the view across the valley. You quickly work your way out of the discussion and walk out to me, setting your drink down on one of the outdoor tables by the pool on your way. I know you are looking at the curves of my body as you walk up to me and I grin a little thinking about it. I know you can smell my body and my fragrance as you get closer. My skin is radiant as it reflects the lights of the house against the dark night sky. Immortality looks great on me.

You walk up behind me and stand with your chest pressed against my back, pressing your body up against mine rather abruptly, which spills a little of my drink making me laugh as it falls. You wrap your arms around me and I put my arms over yours. Your body’s warmth feels amazing in the cool night air. We look out at the view together.

"Are you having a good night?" I ask looking out into the distance. “You look like you are.”

"It's OK. I am just glad to be standing here with you now." you say as you press your lips to the back of my hair. I love how your warm breath feels on the back of my head. I close my eyes and never want this to end. I pull your arms tighter around me.

We both stand there in the quiet night not saying anything. We are one with each other. We are the rulers of own lives and destinies. We can have whatever we wish. We can be with each other forever. Two immortals lost in each other’s companionship.

It only takes a split second for everything to change forever.

From the house we suddenly hear shouts and running. It sounds like someone is fighting before they fall into silence. There is a sound of glass breaking and some sort of weapons being fired. Several unwanted visitors have arrived. I guess they somehow made it over the wall and past security. Their weapons are specially made just to kill us, crossbows with wooden bolts made out of the hardest of hawthorn branches. When fired they can penetrate almost anything amazingly fast and the reload is swift. The invaders know exactly what they are doing. They are here to destroy us.

You let go of me and turn so quickly I barely have time to turn myself to look. You take on a predator’s posture as you scan the house for what is going on. No sooner have you turned than one of the assailants dressed all in black wearing a face cover and hoodie steps out with a crossbow directly aimed at us. You immediately stand between him and me defensively.

As you start to move in his direction, the intruder fires the crossbow bolt. I barely hear it moving through the air. What I do hear is the hard penetrating sound of it hitting your chest right at your heart. You exhale suddenly and your body jolts with the impact. Standing behind you I do not see exactly where it hits but I know this is not good. Your posture changes as you start to step slowly backwards towards me.

Unspeakable horror fills my mind as I drop my glass and rush up behind you. You stumble backwards into my arms. As you start to fall your body’s weight pulls me down onto my knees which hit hard onto the stone. I don’t even feel it because all I can think about is what is happening to you.

The attacker knows he can’t use the crossbow to kill me because you are resting against my chest. He instead takes out a stake and starts to walk towards us. I look up at him with tears starting to form in my eyes while I hold you close. I don’t mind if he kills me if you are going to die. At least we will die together.

Suddenly, the killer’s body freezes as his head is cleaved off by a sword. His body stands there quietly for a moment before dropping the stake and collapsing to the ground. Someone had come up behind him with a sword and sliced his head off in one quick motion. If only he had come sooner.

I hold your body looking down at the arrow in your chest as tears start to stream down my face. My mouth is open but nothing comes out. All I can taste is my tears. I feel your body struggling with the wound and starting to surrender.

“No!”, I finally scream so loud it echoes down the hillside. I pull your body gently against my legs with my knees pressed hard on the cold stone.

You look up at me one last time seeing the tears streaming down my face. You know your life is leaving your body. We both know. You and I both look at each other one last time knowing we are about to be apart.

Oddly, you smile looking up at me and say, “Let me look at your beautiful face.”

“Of course.” I say with tears streaming down my cheeks as I hold your hands tight looking down at you. I can feel your hands starting to turn stone cold as I hold them.

“You are so beautiful. I love you”, you say as your body starts to release all the energy gained during several hundred years of life.

“I love you so much.”, I say looking into your eyes barely able to speak the words in the pain of loss I am feeling.

Your face starts to freeze in the moonlight as you look up at me. Your expression becomes distant. In a split second I can tell you are gone. Your eyelids are the last thing to move slowly halfway over your eyes as death envelopes your face.

I hold your hands so tight and your body so close as I lean down and kiss your lifeless lips one last time. I sit there with you against me resting my head on yours. I can’t move. I don't want to ever move again.

“I love you so much.” I say again, tears streaming down my face.

“I am going miss you forever.”
