Put a group of people together, all claiming to identify with a religion, belief etc - and suddenly they go from being relatively sensible free thinking people to a bunch of politcally correct sheep?
Now for the most part, I would classify myself as NOT politically correct. In fact, Political correctness gives me the absolute shits. Rather than protecting the genuinely bullied or malighned, it's become a method through which we have lost our bloody sense of humour. We take ourselves and our causes so seriously - when someone says something contrary to what we believe or campaign for - suddenly there are cries of racism, bullying or intolerance.
I've also noticed that those who most often scream and protest the loudest, are the ones who rarely have anything to scream about. Whining, whinging martyrs ready to throw themselves in front of the big bad person who makes a mockery of their cause. Years ago, we'd hear 'four eyes', 'geek', 'dork', 'retard' all over the place. Sometimes it was said nastily, other times, it could be a person said to a friend in jest. Not anymore.
For years I have referred to myself as a 'Fag Hag', a title given to me by a gay aquainance years ago, simply meaning that I hung around with lots of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, etc etc people. Truth be told, I hang around with whoever I like, gender and sexuality has never been an issue when it comes to decided whether a person is a friend or not. Being gay doesn't mean you are going to a total fuckup, anymore than being any other gender, sexuality, nationality etc etc. I know plenty of people who are fuckups, no one category defines all of them, they're just arseholes.
So anyway, back to my point about 'Fag Hag'. Recently I was told that the term was offensive. I dunno, but I guess because the term 'fag' is no longer acceptable. 'Hag' seems ok apparently. Now I have never called anyone a fag, not even jokingly, but I quite happily call myself 'faghag' with a fair bit of tongue in cheek. To me, it's a reminder that a) I treat all people equally and see beyond any one definition of them, and b) I quite happily take the piss out of myself, and will continue to do so.
I know the difference between saying hurtful, cruel or derogatory comments about others. And I never consciously do it. Even if I unconsciously offend someone - I mean genuinely - I will apologise. My point is, I don't need Thought Police or the PC cops watching me and telling me what I say is or isn't appropriate.
Some people need to toughen the fuck up - Man Up Ladybird. I'm sick of this plastic, shallow, sterile world we have created. If the nuffnuff's are right, and we will all be over run by the Alien Lizard Overlord, then I for one think they they'll do a fucking better job than we've done.
