Midnight Fairy

My dark little fairy, see how she floats on the midnight wind. Out yonder field through the moonlit air. Atop her brow is a crown of purple, daisies I think I recall. A fair texture to her cunning face. Ah, but don't let her beauty trick you! It's the brains behind the beauty that made this particular fairy. On a cool eve's night she would outwit travelers rather than lust them away into her traps and tricky ways. "Be wary of the midnight fairy" they'd say with a broken leg or two a hobbling into town. For those who cannot best her wit will fall prey to her purple gown. A queer gown it was, it's power greater than ever one could imagine, for in its loins lies in wait a fruit so plentiful not even the most stout of man could refrain. Yet this little fairy once laid eyes on a peculiar man. He was no looker I'd say, about 40 and well past his day. His long curly black hair hid his face and along the way he kept a slow pace. The fairy made her usual bow and hello, then went on her way to start the show. With a flap of her wings away she danced into the night looking for the next romance. The man began to follow her into the wood, soon realizing that it was no good. He'd been ensnared into her deadly trap and forever more would he now nap. "Oh Midnight Fairy, won't you do me no harm. I am lonely and I seek my home farm." In return she only gazed at the man, awaiting his next plea to set his demand. "I have no family and no hope for a wife, but won't you instead kill me with this, my dear old skinning knife. It's blade is sharp and will cause little pain, and hence forth you shalt not see me again." The Fairy gasped at the shocking cries of the dead-end man, unsure of how to solve this problem. For no fun would it be to trick a man with nothing to lose. "I'll set you free if a riddle you can answer for me" she said. The man in his surprise agreed. The Fairy's eyes wide in his face she spoke of the riddle at a slow pace. "The riddle goes as so.....What is once spoken, is always henceforth broken?" A sweat began to tip the man's brow, down lines of age along his weathered chins and onto the now cold hard ground. His thoughts had wound and wound and still nothing he had found. Once something is broken what then would it be to have to be spoken first? the man thought. His head abroad with tales and enigma brought nothing to his mind, then at last, a tiny find. If something were to be spoken it would make a sound. Therefore a sound would break silence. Silence cannot be fixed. The man only smiled at the lusty fairy in return for her stare. "What is your answer?" She floated up into the air. "What is once spoken is a sound my dear fairy, and once broken and cannot be fixed is silence then!" He gave with a great laugh. The midnight fairy looked stunned. How could a mortal man be so cunning? Away with him she thought. Too late now to go back and stop. She would do what needed to be done in order to keep her bargain and her word. She leans into the man, her body imposing, looked into his eyes now filled with glee and boasting. "You will release me eh little fairy? I have won your challenge and indeed I am merry." Her wings shuddered at her loss, but she had the last laugh for now he had crossed. Away she left him, alone in the dark, hanging from a tree, no longer with a heart. Now you know why it is so that you should never stray so far into the woods at night, for the Midnight Fairy makes no bargains and no man shall see the next light.
