Hispanic’s are in plenty of horror scenarios, but they won’t be made into films. Not ones that general audience can watch anyways. Our “Myths”, boogie men and serial killers are much more insidious than those of any other culture. It makes sense if you go back in time to how blood thirsty our ancestors were (the rise and fall of the mighty Aztec Empires) the slaughter of slaves, sacrifice of virgins and most importantly of all….Cucuy’s
Baja California – Mexico
Fall 1987
Yajaira and Tony had waited for the opportune moment to try and pass the American border again. They would make it this time if it killed them. Yajaira was about to give birth and if they didn’t hurry, her baby would be born in Mexico. Probably live and die there, under a corrupt government where honesty, loyalty and integrity meant nothing. The darkness was creeping into coldness, and Yajaira grabbed her belly in one hand and her bag in the other. At Tony’s command she would run wildly to the next marker. Coyotes started giving directions in the far distance and the air was still. Tonight they would achieve their dream, by tomorrow they would be in a breadline and by the end of the month Yajaira would have what the American’s referred to as an ‘anchor baby’. A child born in the United States would forbid them to send her back.
Tony made hand signs but Yajaira didn’t follow them. She knew she could only run a small distance at a time. Tony would have to go double the distance, drop his bag and come back to get her mid way. His trip to America would be three times the length of hers. A whistle was the sign and she went off sprinting in her sandals. “Andale Yaya.” hissed Tony behind her. Her boots would be too tight on her swollen feet but the cold sand and rough rocks were tearing up the flip flops. If they kept to schedule they would be in California by noon. Three days of running, hiding and fearing. A loud growl came from a bush only one hundred yards ahead. Probably another wild dog thought Yajaira as her belly grumbled. Her brother had already reached the spot, he would be coming back to help her as she passed by the scary bush.
The beating of her heart went up as she saw two red eyes piercing through the bush as she jogged past. They just stayed on her. She began to stutter as fear overcame her. Not looking she bumped into Tony who at once began cussing at her. “Pendeja, porque no miras por donde vas?” he said as she made terrible hand gestures to explain what was behind him. Before her brother could turn around he was dragged by the shadow creature with red eyes around the bush…kicking and screaming…and bleeding.
