Yesterday I turned 36. I know many on the rave would find that to be old, but quite honestly I would not be in my teens or twenties again for anything in this world. I like the fact I am getting older and hopefully wiser. I can celebrate the fact that I have survived some very dark, bad times in my life.
My roommate treated me to the Olive Garden for my birthday. I love Italian food, so I was a happy camper. I got three gifts. The DVD of the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. (Yes, I know happiness is not spelled correctly. That is the way it is spelled in the movie title. You will have to watch the movie to find out why. ) It is an excellent film and I do recommend it. I got a book about the Kennedys. I am a history buff and that is one of my favorite subjects. I like this book because it traces the Kennedys all the way back to Ireland. I am Irish, so I am enjoying the parts about the Irish Potato Famine ( It is my history as well) and the parts about the laws the British enacted to keep the Irish from rebelling. The British made it impossible for the Irish to get an education. Reminds me of the same thing that was done to African Americans during slavery in this country. I also got a blue blouse that I love. So, all in all I had a great birthday.
Yesterday my roommate went shopping with her daughter and brought me back an early birthday present. (I turn 36 on March 28th.) She bought me two body sprays of my favorite scent from Bath and Body Works. I was suprised. Then she took me out to eat for dinner at Cheddar's. Since my friend Nthaniel (check out his profile and be kind in rating please) always orders the chicken fried steak, I decided to try it, but after an appetizer of the spinach dip, I could not eat all of it. We were going to go to the movies to see 300, but decided to postpone it, because we had so much food left over. We ended up with three to go boxes. Apparently, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs.
Last night on the History Channel, I watched a couple of interesting programs. One was about Jim Jones and the cult he led. It told the story of the days leading up to November 18, 1978, when he and his followers took their lives. Some believe that it was murder. I would have to agree. Almost three hundred children died that day.
While I watched the program, I got to thinking what kind of person joins a cult? I have always thought that it was somebody who was either weak-minded or not very strong emotionally. My roommate piped in that it had to be someone emotionally vunerable so the cult could prey on them. I tend to agree.
The second show was about cults in general. One guy on there stated that he use to think the only ones who would join a cult would be someone mentally ill. He said he knows better after studying cults and those who have joined them. On an interesting side note, according to the show Christianity was considered a cult when it first started. The narrator made the statement that one man's cult is another man's religion.
